Northwest Authors to Speak in Cathlamet

Writers Alice Finch and Molly Gloss are scheduled to speak and sign copies of their books in September and October.

Alice Finch’s non-fiction book “Child POW” is an account of her experiences, along with her mother, as prisoners of the Japanese during World War II. Her presentation will be held at the Cathlamet Public Library on Saturday afternoon, September 27 at 2 p.m.

Copies of her book are currently available for check-out at the Library.

The Molly Gloss event is scheduled for Pioneer Church, Saturday evening, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. Ms. Gloss’ most recent work “Hearts of Horses” was published in 2007. It will be the featured book for Cowlitz Reads in the spring of 2009. Her previous work “Wild Life” published in 2001, is a fictional account of an outrageous early-twentieth century feminist who supports her household in Skamokawa by writing adventure stories and scientific romances featuring intrepid girl heroes. The event is sponsored by Cathlamet Public Library, Friends of Skamokawa and Trillium Books.

Summer Reading Program is a community effort. Nearly 40 kids participated in “Catch the Reading Bug” Cathlamet Library’s 2008 Summer Reading Program. Top prize winners were Kayla Hiles who read 41 books and Ellie Leitz, who read 39 books. Each weekly session featured a different bug and was coordinated by a team of volunteers reading stories and overseeing crafts. They are: Rebecca Frank, Renae Hauff, Stacy Hargrove, Traci Hering, Stephanie Leitz and Tiffany Neimer. Other volunteers supporting Summer Reading are: Collene Arnold, Kati Cothren, Paris Cothren, Jem Dyer, Laura Dyer, Brianna Parsons and Diana Zimmerman.

The program and prizes were made possible by the following local businesses: Bank of the Pacific, Cathlamet Building Materials, Cathlamet Chevron & RV Park, Cathlamet Pharmacy, Downtown Coffee Shop, The Eagle, Secret Garden, Sharon’s Pizza and Wright Pro Hardware.
