Clothing bank seeks clean, usable items

December 13, 2012

To The Eagle:

This has been a bittersweet year for the Cathlamet Seventh-day Adventist Clothing Bank. We have received more donations than ever, the sweet, and we have received more donations than ever, the bitter. Let me clarify this.

The sweet has several parts. First, what a wonderful, generous community Cathlamet is and has been. Secondly, most of the clothing has been clean, sorted and folded, which makes the clothing bank run smoothly. And lastly, it has been a joy to meet, visit, and laugh and talk with you about our glorious, living savior who came to save us from sin.

This brings me to the bitter, to even have to say this is hard. This past year the clothing bank has received more clothing donations that are very dirty, ripped and stained. To get rid of these items has been very costly to the church. The clothing bank will have been closed these past two weeks to sort through the items already donated. We will also be taking this time to get the clothing bank back up to the standards we expect for the community to shop in.

One other concern has come to our attention, which is that we are selling our clothes. When we sort the clothing we donate the out of season and duplicate pieces of clothes to a non-profit organization, ARC of Clark County. They weigh them and distribute them to other places for use and give us a small amount in return, pennies on the pound. This then is used to pay a portion of the church’s electricity, water, garbage and supplies used by the clothing bank.

We would like to end the year with this reminder: No dirty, ripped or stained clothes, beds, or furniture, since we have no room to keep them clean, dry and safe. And we would like to begin the New Year with: Cathlamet rocks!

Thank you all and Merry Christmas.
