Lady Mules trample four opponents

The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team continued to roll through competition last week, winning four more to bring their overall record to 5-0.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Mules beat Pe Ell, 64-17. Defense and steal after steal wore down the Trojan team as the Lady Mules scored on the fast break over and over, spending most of their time on defense while Pe Ell tried to set up plays.

Maddy Mace scored 15 points to lead the team. She also pulled down seven rebounds and had three assists, and four steals. Freshman Macie Elliott added 12 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and eight steals. Savannah Burdick scored nine points and had six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Sydney Hansen posted up for eight points and one rebound. Peyton Souvenir had seven points, six rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Grace Peacock added five points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. Tyra Elliott scored four points and had two rebounds and two steals. Rory Heywood had two points, two rebounds, and one steal. Ellie Leitz scored two points and had two rebounds.

Coach Rob Garrett only had one complaint and he was glad to have it.

"They were too unselfish," he said, "passing up clear shots to give the ball to a teammate."

The team continued to roll through competition on Friday and Saturday, winning their games quickly and easily.

On Friday, Lady Mules beat Winlock at home, 56-13. The girls pulled ahead 24-0 in the first quarter, only slowing down when Garrett gave the bench some time on the floor in the second half.

Souvenir scored 19 points and had five rebounds, six assists, four steals, and one block. M. Elliott added 12 points and had seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Mace scored 11 points and had three rebounds, two assists, and five steals. Burdick had seven points, three rebounds and one steal. Peacock, Hansen, and T. Elliott scored two points apiece. Peacock had six rebounds and one assist; Hansen had three rebounds, one assist and two steals; and T. Elliott had one rebound, three assists and one steal. Leitz scored one point.

The Lady Mules won at home again on Saturday against Mossyrock, 70-38.

Mace and M. Elliott led scoring with 20 points each. M. Elliott also had 12 rebounds, three assists and five steals. Mace had three rebounds and four steals. Souvenir and Burdick added seven points apiece. Souvenir had 10 rebounds, nine assists, five steals, and one block. Burdick had six rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block. Hansen and Charlie Ashe added five points each. Hansen also had seven rebounds and one steal. Ashe had two rebounds. Peacock added four points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Heywood scored two points and pulled down two rebounds. T. Elliott had four rebounds two assists and one steal. Leitz had one rebound.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mules hosted Stevenson and won again 61-34.

Burdick led scoring with 23 points. She also had six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Souvenir added 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. M. Elliott scored seven points, and had four rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Heywood had six points and three rebounds. Hansen added four points and one rebound and T. Elliott had two points, four rebounds and two steals. Mace also had two points, one rebound, one assist, and three steals. Peacock had eight rebounds, one assist , and five steals. Leitz had one steal and one block.

The Lady Mules hosted Morton/White Pass on Wednesday. The score was not available by press time.

They play their last game of 2015 on Friday at Napavine and pick up again after the holidays on January 2 in Ilwaco.
