Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby set for August 29-30

The 2nd Annual Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby will be held August 29-30 according to Cathlamet area resident and VFW member, Bob Roche, who is organizing the event.

"We believe it is the only salmon derby in the nation specifically for men and women who were injured while wearing the uniform of the United States," said Roche. He added, "We want to provide a unique Northwest experience for the Warriors and Widows, many of whom are from other parts of the country and have never fished for or even seen a large salmon.

"It was amazing last year. The word spread and it seemed like the entire community stepped up and wanted to be involved. People donated their boats, equipment and expertise, as well as lodging and food for our special guests," said Roche.

This year 35 soldiers and 10 widows and their children are expected. The Hotel Cathlamet has donated all of their rooms to provide lodging and volunteers are working on other donations.

A special account for financial donations from individuals and organizations who want to contribute to the Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby has been established by VFW Post 5297.

Donations made payable to the VFW-WTB may be sent to the VFW, 295 W. Sunny Sands Rd., Cathlamet, WA 98612. The funds will be used for the sole purpose of the Warriors and Widows Salmon Derby.

Roche noted, "This salmon derby is how Cathlamet says thank you to the men and women who wear the uniform and keep us safe. We hope it will become a model for other communities."
