Lady Mules win two; place 2nd at R.A. Long

Katie Johnson has been consistent and successful behind the service line all year. On Tuesday, she set the ball in motion in the third set of Lady Mules match against the Rainier Mountaineers.

The Wahkiakum Mules volleyball team won two matches this week and took second place in the Lumberjill Invite at R.A. Long over the weekend.

Last Thursday, the Lady Mules easily dispatched their host, Winlock in three sets, 25-9, 25-10, and 25-14, to win the match.

Makenzie Anderson had nine kills. Ellie Leitz had four kills and two blocks. Peyton Souvenir served 11 aces. Grayci Thomas added a couple kills after being moved to a new position, according the Coach Kayli Hurley.

"Mckensi Fluckiger and Amber Silva were strong in the back court as well," Hurley said.

Last weekend, the Lady Mules won seven of 10 sets in the R.A. Long Lumberjill Invite to take second place. They played two sets against five teams. The Lady Mules beat Jewell, Seton Catholic and R.A. Long for six wins, split games with Castle Rock and lost two to La Center.

"This day was an all around team effort," Hurley said.

She praised several members of the team, including Charlie Ashe for "coming in with a few big hits and big kills" and Thomas, who was "working into a new position with some consistency." Macie Elliott and Leitz "were playing well above the net and got some great touches", Savannah Burdick "brought great energy and hustle to the back court," and Anderson "was consistently strong offensively." Souvenir "had some huge offensive plays and second ball saves," and Katie Johnson was strong from the service line while RayAnna Carlon "was a consistent force in the front row." Finally, Fluckiger and Silva "had some awesome digs and rounded out our serve receive."

"The tournament was a great gear up for the rest of the league," Hurley said.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mules beat Rainier in three sets, 25-14, 25-9, 25-7.

"It was a bit of a slow start but we progressively got more efficient as the night went on," Hurley said. "Serving was aggressive tonight and serve receive was pretty consistent. Sydney Hansen, Fluckiger, Burdick, and Silva were strong in the back court."

Anderson had six kills and Leitz had two solo blocks. Elliott had four kills. Souvenir added two kills and had 17 assists in her role as setter.

The Lady Mules are 5-1 in league.

They travel to Adna tonight (Thursday) and face Mossyrock at home next Tuesday.
