Down River Dispatches - News of Western Wahkiakum County and Naselle
by Trudy Fredrickson email 465-2960

Month of May offers many spring events

When the sun comes out so do the lawnmowers and gardeners trying to catch up on planting their gardens. Last weekend was a perfect example of that.
It wasn’t just the folks with green thumbs out and about, though. Lots and lots of motorcycles were on the road. In fact on Sunday, I had to hurry getting my lawn mowed so that we could head out on a short run in the afternoon. The weather was perfect, not too hot and not too cold. We just made a circle over to Astoria, east on Highway 30, crossed the river on the ferry into Cathlamet and back to Grays River for a bite to eat at the Grays River Café. It sure is nice to have Bob and Bev (running the restaurant), and such a home style atmosphere, good food and good company on nights when you don’t want to cook.
While we were at the café, Norman and Myrtle Anderson, stopped in for a bite to eat accompanied by her son and daughter in law. They are doing well, and Myrtle looked especially nice that afternoon.
Dean Badger happened to be there also with some of his family.

News from Naselle:
I have heard nothing but wonderful comments from several people who have already seen “Willie Wonka” at Naselle High School. The play opened last Friday evening and I guess it was an outstanding performance. It’s not too late to see it, as they will be performing again this weekend, on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 7 p.m. How about taking Mom out for the evening, since Mother’s Day in also this weekend. Sounds like a wonderful treat to me.
The Naselle Congregational Church will host their Trash and Treasure Sale and Luncheon on May 17 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information please contact Shirley Grabenhorst.

Other news from the Westend:
The women of Grays River Friendship Circle have combined their sixth annual Spring Tea and Luncheon: “ Keeping You In Stitches and Tea”, with a display of local residents’ needlework, and a power-point slide show history of Grays River Valley Pioneers. Local historian, Carlton Appelo, will narrate the history.
The public is invited to enjoy a full luncheon of assorted sandwiches, fresh fruits and vegetables with dips, and a dessert of various dainty cookies, tea and punch.
Doors at the Rosburg Community Hall in Rosburg, WA will open at noon on May 18. Luncheon will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the program following. You can wear a treasured dress or hat for the occasion if you wish.
Again this year we have many donated prizes for our raffle and winners may choose their prizes from those displayed. Increase your chances of winning by purchasing multiple tickets at $1 per chance.
There is a minimum donation of $5 per person at the door. For more information contact call Cheryl Dutcher at 360- 465-2740 or Marilyn Gudmundsen at 360-465-2279.
I received an e-mail update on Poul and Zenaida Toftemark’s vacation to his homeland, Denmark. This is Zenaida’s first trip there and they are having a wonderful time “being spoiled to the max by all the family.”
On their flight to Denmark they flew over Greenland with the most spectacular views of the ice glaciers and flows in the mountains most of the way to Iceland. Caught a few glimpses of Norway before arriving in Denmark. They have been enjoying gorgeous spring weather and much catching up with his aunts, uncles and cousins. They spent the first two days in Copenhagen, checking out the sights. Then on to the train, to visit the area where Poul was born, and more family. Next, they will rent a car and visit the home of his Grandfather. Sounds like they are having a great time.
The Grays River Habitat Enhancement District will meet for their regular monthly meeting on May 14 th at 6 p.m. in the Grays River Grange Hall. This is a public meeting and everyone is invited to attend. Find out what is going on with our river. The Commissioners invite your input, suggestions and questions. For more information please contact Delvin Fredrickson.
TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) meets in the exercise room of the old Rosburg School in Johnson Park every Tuesday at 5 p.m. For more information call 465-2656 or 465-2321.
The Art group still meets on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. at Johnson Park. Won’t you join them? A very multi talented group of local artists, all skill levels and varied mediums. For more info call Noreen Fitts.
Yoga anyone? They meet on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m. also at Johnson Park. Call Jack Braman for more information.
The Community Computer Center is open on Tuesday and Thursday from 1-5 p.m. Come check out what is offered and become a volunteer. Free DSL.
