Where did 2009 go? I cant believe its almost 2010. That means we have lived here for 10 years, and it seems like we moved in yesterday.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Our household certainly did. We even got to visit with three of our former puppies. What a trip watching five big dogs wrestle and run in the fields. They are all related, as we have the mother, father and big brother, and they all seem to remember that this is where they came from. We also got a Christmas card from one of the other puppies from that litter.
What a fun time, with family, friends, food, and time to visit and play. Grays River is the perfect place to call home, at least for us. Our kids and grandkids tend to agree, as well.
News from Naselle:
Its always nice to hear about former students of Naselle High School. One in particular, Colette Beaulaurier, a 2007 graduate of Naselle High school was selected to represent the United States in an International Student Volunteer (ISV) work program last summer, along with other participants from universities throughout North America and Europe.
She committed to a minimum 120 hours of volunteer time in the Dominican Republic working on the El Castillo Project. The project goal was to help improve the lives of the people of the Dominican Republic who are less fortunate than we are, while building bridges of cultural understanding between ISV students and the people of the Dominican Republic.
Specific goals included building a house and latrines for local families, working with Dominican children on basic education (English, Math, Geography and Sciences), play, dance, arts and crafts and recreation to enrich their daily lives with a healthy sense of fun. She also helped to educate the children in the areas of hygiene, social awareness, and to share our differing cultural backgrounds - giving the children a perspective outside of their own life experiences.
Her schedule included staying with a local family for one week of Spanish immersion, structured volunteer time with 30 other students and an adventure tour. Upon completion of the El Castillo Project, the ISV participants traveled throughout the Dominican Republic, exploring the limestone caves, coral reefs, lush canyons and rivers, the Dominican Alps, breathtaking beaches and laid-back beachside lifestyles. She returned September 3, 2009.
Colette is a junior at Western Washington University. She is the daughter of Scott and Patti Beaulaurier of Naselle.

Join in Timberland Regional Librarys 13th annual Adult Winter Reading program, running from Saturday, January 2 through March 15. The program offers the chance to win prizes just for reading and staying snug all winter.
Brochures with complete rules, entry forms and prize lists will be available at all Timberland libraries by the last week of December. Basically, for each five books or audio books you finish during the program period, complete a form and turn it in at a Timberland library by Monday, March 15th. Participants must be 18 or older and have a current Timberland library card.
The list of prizes, including overnight resort getaways and book-and-beverage baskets, will be drawn on March 22nd. Local Timberland libraries will award additional prizes that have been donated by businesses and Friends of the Library groups. Check this program out at the Naselle library. Sounds like a great time.
Other news from the Westend:
With all the cold weather recently the Johnson Park Advisory Board has decided that the school building needs to keep the heat on in order to maintain the interior of the gymnasium and to keep the floor from being damaged. Most of the rooms have their own heaters and are paid for individually but the gym and the hallways are extremely cold this time of year. The community could really help the board out by giving a donation designated to the heating fund.
The Advisory Board is also looking for a new member. They meet once a month and the meetings usually last approximately one hour. If you are interested in being involved with the Johnson Park project, please call Norm Bolton or Judy Durrah.
Birthdays being celebrated this coming week include: Delores Nelson and Sue Holt on the 31st; Dorothy Johnson, Leonard Vaughn, Marcie Dunham and Cheryl Caetano on January 1; Heather Leonard on the 2nd; Alan Wirkkala, Keith Wirkkala and James Ray Smith on the 3rd; Sylvia Standerfer, Lawrence Busse, Laura Ann Leaf, Logan Sandell and Tracy Shirek on the 4th; Will Wuorinen, Marshall Wirkkala, Eric Peterson and my favorite first, wonderful neighbor Signa Kilponen on the 5th; Vickie Wirkkala, Brian Cooper, Gary Queener, Harvey Johnson Jr., Michael Busse and Richard Angstrom on the 6th.
