Drama club show Friday at 7 p.m.

January 20, 2011

Flooded in again! It wasn’t too bad until Sunday and we couldn’t get any of the vehicles out. The ducks are in heaven though.

Our dogs have discovered that if they wade into the water under the trees, they can pick the mice out of the lower branches and have a snack. Of course sometimes you have to share with the other dogs.

News from Naselle:

The Naselle Drama Club will host a Musical Variety Show on Friday at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door to help defray some of the Drama Club costs. Enjoy a fun filled evening of family entertainment including the famous Naselle Marimba Band, Wilho Saari and the Kantele players, high school singers and dancers and other talented community members. To top off the evening, dessert will be served.

The Comet Booster Club will be serving a crab dinner on January 22, beginning at 6 p.m. The dinner consists of one crab, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, garlic bread and ice cream for dessert for $10. The day will be filled with basketball games against Ocosta beginning at 1:30 and concessions will be available all day. Come and support the Comets!

Sports schedule for the Comets this week: Friday-middle school boys basketball at North Beach; Saturday-high school boys and girls basketball in Naselle with Ocosta starting at 1:30 p.m. with the crab feed in the evening and concessions all day; Tuesday-high school girls basketball at Raymond at 5:45 p.m .; Wednesday, the 26th-middle school boys basketball at home with Ocosta at 5:45 p.m.

Wednesday is the end of the second quarter for the school year and it is also an in-service day so students will be released early at 12:30 p.m.

The Appelo Archives Center will host an Old Time Loggers Event on Saturday, January 29 from noon to 4 p.m. Come one, come all loggers, young or old, and tell your stories or just listen. Logging has changed over the years, and will continue to change so your stories need to be told for posterity. What better place to have this reunion of loggers and their history, than the Appelo Archives Center. Thank you, Carlton, for your foresight, photos and historical knowledge of our area and for giving it a place to be housed for all to enjoy. A big thank you as well to those who have worked so hard to make Carlton’s dream of an archive center come to fruition.

Other news from the Westend:

The kitchen committee for Johnson Park would like to publicly thank the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Tacoma for offering us a commercial dishwasher for our kitchen, as well as some other kitchen equipment. We will be sending a representative to Tacoma within a few days to check the measurements and decide what we will need to get the equipment moved here. If anyone is interested in helping out when the merchandise becomes available, please call me or Penny Gregory.

Speaking of Johnson Park, we seem to have some outstanding keys and would really appreciate it if they were returned. If you are a sponsor ($50 per year for a family), you will receive the key codes to unlock the doors for your activities. In the very near future the locks and their codes will be changed, and we don’t want to inconvenience anyone. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

If you would like to have an event at Johnson Park, you can contact Judy Durrah at 465-2331. You can also check the calendar just inside the north entrance of the old Rosburg School near the community computer center, or the calendar inside the Grays River Valley Library.

Don’t forget the Valentine Diamond Dinner on February 12 at the Skamokawa Grange Hall, and the tickets are still $25 per person. Proceeds will help keep our Wahkiakum County Fair going. This is a wonderful evening filled with good company, delicious food, beautiful music and you also have the chance to take home a beautiful diamond necklace. I know, because I was the winner two years ago. Hopefully, I will have the same luck as Carol Ervest did last year by winning again, as mine was burned in our house fire. If not, I know whoever does win it will enjoy it. There are lots of other really nice raffle prizes as well.

Tickets for the dinner are available at Bank of the Pacific in Cathlamet or from Becky Ledtke on the east end, and from the Rosburg Store on the Westend.

I know it’s early, but the annual American Legion Crab Feed will be held on March 5 at the Rosburg Hall. This event is always a sellout so make sure you get your tickets early. I will have more information available in the next few weeks.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at the Rosburg Hall will enjoy pulled pork, coleslaw, chips and dessert on the 26th. Thanks to Pat Potter and her volunteer crew for their efforts and labor to keep this venue available for our seniors. They are truly appreciated by the community.

Also, a special thanks to CAP for providing senior lunches on Tuesday and Thursday each week. These two groups make it fun for folks to meet, have a nutritious lunch and socialize. Menus for the Rosburg Senior Community Lunches are as follows: Thursday, the 20th-chicken Romanesco, scalloped potatoes, Swiss chard and carrot cake; Tuesday, the 25th-chicken cacciatore, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots and brownies; Thursday, the 27th-stuffed pork, vegetable paella, carrot/raisin salad and peanut butter bars.

Birthdays being celebrated this coming week include Stacy Katyryniuk, Dan Johnson, Kevin Leaf, Stephanie Gudmundsen, David Leeland, Dorina Fithin, Bobbie Jo Faddis, Rose See, James Henry, Alan Gatens, Amber Eaton, Rita Rafferty, Sarah Dotson, Sheldon Warden, Michelle Wirkkala, Monte Givens, Andrea Kay Smith, Esther Gregg and Jill Keller. Happy Birthday to each of you.

Happy Anniversary to Duane and Judy Kent who will celebrate their special day this week. Wishing you many more.

It feels like old times again, here at home. Just like it used to be when I had to cook meals for my large family every day. Our son Don is here again from Bend, Ore., to help out on the house. For the next couple of weeks we also have our son Delvin, our son-in-law Matt, and George, a long time family friend here from Stockton, Calif. It sure is nice when your kids are available and they all have construction experience. Thanks, boys.

Now, to get back to the kitchen. Spaghetti for dinner tonight with coleslaw and garlic bread.
