Priscilla Circle salad luncheon this Saturday

April 28, 2011

Thank you, Wahkiakum County Commissioners Blair Brady and Dan Cothren for stepping up to the plate and passing an ordinance, two votes to one, restricting the use of septic sludge and any biosolids not determined to be Class A in Wahkiakum County. Also a thank you to Prosecuting Attorney Dan Bigelow for putting it all together to be voted on. Another thank you to the folks who have supported passing an ordinance, through their letters and phone calls and for attending meetings with regard to this issue. You all know who you are.

News from Naselle:

Sports coming up this week for the Naselle Comet teams: Thursday-home track meet in Naselle, baseball at Oakville at 3:30 p.m .; Friday-fast pitch vs. Wahkiakum in Naselle at 4 p.m .; Monday-baseball in Naselle vs. North Beach at 4 p.m .; Tuesday-track at Ilwaco; Wednesday-middle school track at South Bend. Good luck Comets.

Naselle School’s first grade class is learning about the properties of air. With water, they learned how air is trapped in a vial until it is tapped, releasing the air and letting the water rush in. Photos accompanying this column show how the students “captured” air in parachutes.

Naselle School held its annual Art Show. Artwork was submitted by kindergartners up through 6th grade. Influences of many famous painters such as Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keefe could be seen. The winners are: Kindergarten: 3rd place-Haley Eastham, 2nd place-Brayden Colombo, 1st place-Dalton Ashe; 1st Grade: 3rd place-Gracie Ahlstrom, 2nd place-Echo Cenci, 1st place-Joshua Chadwick; 2nd Grade: 3rd place Emma Rose, 2nd place- Devin Wirkkala, 1st place-Warren Wirkkala; 3rd Grade: 3rd place-Ethan Lindstrom, 2nd place-Helenna Salazar, 1st place-Bailey Rose; 4th Grade: 3rd place-Jacob Eaton, 2nd place-McKenzie Glenn, 1st place-Samantha Gustafson; 5th grade: 3rd place-Christina Mabbit, 2nd place-Micah Cenci, 1st place-Samantha Wert.

In 6th grade, Karinda Cooper earned first place. New this year was the People’s Choice Award. This is an award voted upon by the student body as their favorite. There was a tie for this award: 5th grader Samantha Wert’s kangaroo picture and 3rd grader Jack Ruch’s whimsical picture of the “Toads” from the Mario Bros. video game.

The Friends of the Naselle Timberland Library will meet Tuesday, May 3 at 6 p.m., at the library. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month (excluding July and August). Meetings are open to the public and new members are welcome. For more information call (360) 484-3877.

Saturday is the 35th annual Spring Salad Luncheon held by the Priscilla Circle of the Naselle Lutheran Church. Check out the "Farm Fresh" theme for this year. A donation of $6 will guarantee a full tummy as you indulge in a variety of salads at the luncheon. The garden area will open at 10 a.m., and the luncheon/craft/quilt sale hours will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Naselle Lutheran Church is located at 308 Knappton Road.

Other news from the Westend:

Do you like to bake? Would you consider donating some baked goods to the book and bake sale which will be held on May 7, at Johnson Park? If you are interested please contact Penny Gregory at 360 465-2775. If you would just like to drop off some baked goods for the sale, someone will be at the park by 8 a.m. on the day of the sale.

The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and the proceeds will be used for expenses relating to the combining of the Computer Center and the Grays River Valley Library into one room.

Duplicate books from the library will be on sale as well as the baked goods. This would be a perfect time to check out some of the things we have going on in the old school building.

The rummage sale at the park on that day is not a benefit for Johnson Park. It is a private sale.

Johnson Park has recently had quite a few volunteers who are doing community service. The Board would like to say thank you to each and every one of them for jobs well done. Ollie Baker, a Naselle senior, needed a couple of hours of service and went well beyond his required hours by moving the rubber matting from the grassy area in front of the old Rosburg School. We have also had several others who do cleanup inside the building, and are working to get rid of weeds and other debris outside the building. It’s this kind of volunteerism that is helping to keep the building self-sustaining. We could still use monetary donations to pay for the large heating bills that we have incurred this year.

It seems that the Toftemark family, Poul and Zenaida of Rosburg will be welcoming an addition to their family, within a few months. They are in the process of adopting a young man named Elmer. Elmer is the son of a nephew in the Philippines whose mother is deceased. He is seven years old. What a lucky little boy to have such great adoptive parents, and I’m sure that Poul and Zenaida also consider themselves lucky to have this opportunity to raise this child in such a wonderful place as Echo Meadows.

Don’t forget the deadline of May 4 for your pre-entry to the 27th Annual Great White Tail Run, if you want to be guaranteed a T-shirt. The event will take place on May 21 at the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge in Skamokawa. For more information please call 360 465-2275 or 360 795-3278.

Date for the 10K, 5K and two mile run is May 21 and it is an annual fund raiser for Wahkiakum County based 4-H programs.

Another annual event to benefit our kids, is gearing up for June 4, 2011. The 11th annual Scholarship Barbecue and Sturgeon Derby has pre registration forms out all over the county and Naselle. Get your pole out and come on out for a fun filled family day. This event is sponsored by Wahkiakum Dollars For Scholars Foundation and the Naselle-Grays River Valley Education Association. Proceeds provide scholarships to students from Naselle and Wahkiakum High Schools.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets at Rosburg Hall every Wednesday at noon for a great meal and good company. The meals are prepared by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. The community thanks you for all you do.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the Rosburg Senior Community Lunches are also served at the above location and are sponsored by CAP. Nutritious meals for our seniors three days a week. What a deal.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to the following people this coming week: Lori Dearmore, Bonnie Linquist, Bonnie Busse, Faith Penttila, Mark Tienhaara, Mayce McCullough, Bob Liabraaten, Ramona Smith, Amanda Sprotti, Doug Nikolas, Matthew Wood, Alicia Wood, Kristi Ray, Aaron Varila, Glenn Miller, Jeanette Grimberg, Just Thomas, Barbara Combs, Jonathan Bates, Carl Smith, Lonnie Eaton, Koen Rogers, Dan Stephan and Lori Hamp.

An extra special Happy Birthday to Beverly Wallace of Grays River and a huge thank you for volunteering as Saturday librarian at the Grays River Valley Library in Johnson Park. Wishing you many more happy days.

Happy Anniversary to the following couples this week: Kaycee and Spencer Headley, Rod and Cecile Smith, Dale and Barbara Rose and Clyde and Charmie Sprague.

Had a wonderful working weekend with our kids in Redmond, Ore. for the Easter holiday. My husband did some electrical work on the kids' house and I helped my daughter burn their two acres of field in preparation for irrigation. Then did a little cleanup inside prepping for her new bamboo floors. Also had some one on one time with great-grandson, Ezekiel who will be two in June. It’s always nice to come home though.
