Class of 2011 looks to the future

News from Naselle:

The school year is just about done, kids are getting anxious for summer vacation, and our class of 2011 is looking forward to a new chapter in their lives. One more fun family event will take place on June 8. The all school carnival will begin at 6 p.m. for all ages. Come join in and have a last get together with all the kids and their friends before they all go separate ways for the summer.

Naselle-Grays River Valley Class of 2011 will hold their graduation ceremony on June 11 at 4 p.m. in the gymnasium.

When you’re looking for something fun and affordable to do with your kids this summer, check out the Timberland Regional Library system. Summer at local branches begins in mid-June when schools let out. Children from infancy to age 18 and their parents and caregivers can pick up summer program packets including schedules of free events and activities, prize tickets, reading logs and booklists. (Last summer, 13,850 packets were picked up and 43,670 youth participated in library summer programs as well as events outside the library.)

Pacific County Chapter of ABATE will hold their regular meeting on June 5 at 10 a.m. at Hunters Inn in Naselle. You can show up at 9 a.m. and enjoy a casual breakfast before the meeting as well.

Other news from the Westend:

Get ready, get set, go fish! Now’s your chance to be a Sturgeon Derby winner, and have a great day of fishing while benefitting our kids. This coming Saturday will be the 11th Annual Dollars For Scholars Sturgeon Derby and Scholarship Barbecue in Skamokawa at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds sponsored by Wahkiakum Dollars For Scholars Foundation and Naselle-Grays River Valley Education Association. Last year this event along with the annual Rods and Reels Car Show raised over $18,000 for student scholarships at Wahkiakum High School and Naselle High School.

Bring the whole family to the fairgrounds for a fun filled day. Kids 12 and under can fish for free in the trout pond. Raffle tickets will be on sale for many special prize packages. Enjoy the barbecue dinner of salmon and chicken with all the trimmings, and listen to the Naselle Marimba Band as it performs its unique music. After dinner the awards will be handed out to the Derby contenders (always a wonderful array of prizes).

Throughout the day you can browse through all the beautiful vehicles on display at the fairgrounds. Awards will be given out to those vehicles voted on by judges and the attendees during the day in many different categories.

We invited fairly new neighbors Steve and Linda Ramsey of Grays River (they bought David and Deborah White’s old home) to the American Legion breakfast last Saturday morning and it seemed like everyone in the county took advantage of the wonderful meal. There were Legion Auxiliary members also on hand with hand made poppies to wear in support of our veterans. Wonderful food and great company.

Speaking of the Ramseys, she had an absolutely brilliant hint for me when I told her I was putting a polyurethane finish on our new doors. I had been using a foam brush, and she brought me a piece of an old memory foam mattress pad. She said to cut it into a wedge, put on a latex glove, dip into the polyurethane and wipe it on. Wow! It was wonderful, no drips, no bubbles, no streaks and it conformed perfectly to the indentations on the door. Thanks Linda, and I hope this tip helps someone else.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will feast on a nice filling meal of spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and dessert on the 8th.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, seniors can also enjoy a nutritious meal at Rosburg Hall sponsored by CAP.

Birthdays being celebrated this coming week include Charlie Otterson, Grace Zimmerman, Tylor Russell, Tom Thompson, Abigail Bennett, Bob Engelson, Jordan Badger, John Indermark, Mindy Penttila, Brenda See, Errin Smalley, Kyle Donlon, David Bighill, Dawn Warden, Leigh Ann Wood, Pete Howard, Zack Badger, Shannon Wirkkala, Erin Wirkkala, Diane Matthews, Jesse Lopez, Linda Bryant and Mildred Ziak. Wishing everyone the very best as they celebrate their special day.

Happy Anniversary to the following couples this week: Kyle and Jenni Isaak, Gene and Wendy Anderson, Ryan and Cherise Bjornsgard, Tim and Deanna Wilson, Richard and Linday Cary and Arne and Aliissa Wirkkala. Wishing you many more celebrations.

We had a great weekend with our son and daughter-in-law from Bend, Ore. They helped us move some of the heavy lumber out of the front yard, mow and do a little outside cleanup. We were able to move the vanity into our bathroom downstairs, so now all three bathrooms are nearly complete and usable.

Hardwood flooring is still sitting in the middle of the living room and family room getting acclimated. Carpet will be going in upstairs hopefully by the 10th, and the hardwood put in shortly after that. New woodstove being picked up later this week and then the brick surround for it will be constructed in the family room. Then cabinets. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Still need to get the gutters on the outside, prime and paint and put in deck and steps. The weather hasn’t cooperated very well to get that part done. Hopefully we will have a summer this year and we can complete this project. Thanks to everyone for all your good thoughts.
