Lindgren Cabin needs more volunteer hosts

August 11, 2011

News from Naselle:

I had a call from Josie Ciambetti with a reminder that the Wahkiakum County Fair will have an extra special concession during this year’s three day run. The Naselle High School Cheerleaders will be cooking and serving two wonderful treats to the fairgoers. You can chow down on tamales and chicken adobo while you are enjoying the fair and at the same time helping the cheerleaders in their fund raising efforts for their cheerleading camp. The Wahkiakum County Fair will be held in Skamokawa on August 18, 19 and 20.

One of Glenrose Hedlund's favorite summer activities was hosting at the Lindgren Cabin at Cullaby Lake between Warrenton and Seaside. This 40 x 20 foot cedar log cabin was built by her grandfather, Eric Lindgren, in the Nehalem wilds on Soapstone Creek far from any roads. He and a neighbor's son, William Merila, finished the ax hewn cabin in the 1920s. It and the sauna/wood shed were later taken apart board by board, numbered, and reassembled at Cullaby Lake County Park where visitors can come to appreciate this pioneer Finnish craftsmanship.

The Finnish American Historical Society of the West, based in Portland, furnished the cabin and equipped it with rugs, tools, utensils and an array of other items. For years, their members hosted each weekend all summer. However, they are getting on in years, so other volunteers have had to step forward. Elaine Hedlund Wilbanks has done a tremendous job of cleaning the cabin and organizing hosts, but she can't do it alone. These dates still need volunteers to host, so if you can help, email her or give her a call: August 13, August 21, August 27 & 28, September 3, 4 and 5. ewilbanks@comcast.net or 360/430-557.

Other news from the Westend:

The annual Pig Roast/Campout and potluck is done for this year. What a great family oriented weekend, wonderful food, something for everyone and culminating in a beautiful fireworks display. Thank you Poul and Zenaida for hosting this fantastic event. See everyone next year.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will enjoy a nice picnic style lunch of hot dogs, pork and beans, chips, veggie tray and a fruit dessert tray on the 17th. Even if the summer weather doesn’t cooperate, the menu will make it seem like a nice summer day. The menu for the next week will be macaroni and cheese, veggies, bread and dessert.

Rosburg Senior Community lunches are sponsored by CAP on Tuesdays and Thursdays also at Rosburg Hall. Next week's menus are as follows: Thursday, the 11th-chicken Divan, corn and carrots, rice Pilaf, sliced oranges and lemon bars; Tuesday, the 16th-Swedish meatballs, egg noodles with kale, tossed salad and peach crisp; no lunch will be served on the 18th, as the venue will be closed for the Wahkiakum County Fair.

Happy Birthday wishes go out to the following people this week: Mike Bighill, Hannah Badger, Jeremy Bennett, Kelli Revis, Kim Tarabochia, Debbie Bighill, Maia Wise, Rhonda Smalley, Carol Ervest, Anna Ehrlund, Colby Engelson, Cathy Francis, Rebecca Strong, Bob Eaton, Alina Ashe, Myka Thompson, Amanda Haataia, Dale Heiner, Michael McIntee and JJ McCullough.

A belated Happy Birthday to one of the hardest working Johnson Park volunteers, Cindy Lahti. Sorry I wasn’t around to help sing Happy Birthday to you at the Grays River Café on your special day. Wishing you many more happy and healthy birthdays.

Happy Anniversary to these couples this week: Robert and Shannon Maki, Greg and Karen Wirkkala, Roland and Dawn Thompson, Charles and Sharon Ross, Peter and Nancy McGuire, Travis and Jen Boggs and Glenn and Shirley Miller.

Looking forward to a nice visit with our nephew, Mark Fredrickson and his wife, Melissa from Yucca Valley, Calif. I hope they enjoy our cooler weather.
