Harvest and Halloween events scheduled

October 13, 2011

In order to complete this column I have had to move my computer to another room, since our new little kittens have decided to wreak havoc on my typing and me. They think I’m a tree to be climbed and chewed on, and they think it’s so much fun to touch the keys and make things move on the screen. They actually had the typed page turned sideways on the screen. Thank goodness our son Carl was here, as I had no idea how to fix that problem. But on the other hand, they sure are cute and they love all the dogs. I guess we’ll keep them.

Our hot tub has been relocated to the back deck and rewired so we should be able to use it again soon. Still lots to do on the house, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Relaxing in the hot tub will make it that much nicer.

Other news from the Westend:

New books are being added to the Grays River Valley Library at Johnson Park, in several different genres. To see a list of the new books go to graysriverlibrary.org and click on the new book list.

There are lots of activities going on each day at the Grays River Valley Center and that information is reflected in our newest newsletter which is being mailed to Rosburg and Grays River residents and copies are also available at Grays River Valley Center, Okie’s and the Rosburg Store. If you would like a copy sent electronically, let me know and I will send you one.

Volunteers are gearing up for the second annual All Hallows/Harvest Evening on October 29, at Johnson Park with a few minor changes from last year. Trick or Treating will take place starting at the west entrance of the newly named Grays River Valley Center (Old Rosburg School), and will begin at 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Bring your little ghosties and goblins and enjoy trick or treating out of the weather. Then head for the north end of the building where we will have free popcorn and movies.

We will be selling script at the door for face painting, games, cake walk, hot dogs and pop. Tickets (script) will be four for $1 and can be used for the items mentioned above. Most games will be one ticket, face painting and cake walk will be two tickets and hot dogs or a pop will be two tickets.

If you have any harvest or Halloween decorations that you would like to donate to the event you can contact Cindy Lahti or Penny Gregory or you can also drop them off at the Grays River Valley Library. We could also use some pumpkins, both large and small. If you would like to help out, we can still use a few volunteers. We hope to make this a fun, family friendly, community affair.

Grays River United Methodist Church Friendship Circle’s Stew Luncheon & Bazaar will also be held October 29 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Enjoy the wonderful beef stew, cheesy bread, coffee, hot mulled cider and dessert. I can personally say this is a meal not to be missed. And they do take-out as well.

You can also catch up on some holiday shopping while you are there as there will be some crafts, paintings, original clothing and home decorator items as well as a bake sale at very reasonable prices.

The church is located on State Route 4 near milepost 18, on the hill east of the Grays River Café. For information on the event, phone 360-465-2740 or 360-465-2240. To call in orders the day of the event, call 360-465-2391.

The annual Holiday Bazaar and lunch sponsored by the Rosburg Community Club at Rosburg Hall will take place on November 5. They will once again serve their famous chicken with a wonderful salad bar for a nominal fee, and while you are there you can browse among the many hand made craft holiday items offered at the bazaar. If you are interested in a space to sell your wares, please contact Barbara Rose. More information coming on this event.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will enjoy soups, hot rolls and dessert on the 19th and the group will move to the Valley Bible Church for the 4th Wednesday of the month where they will be served tater tot casserole, mixed veggies, bread and dessert.

CAP sponsored Rosburg Senior Community Lunches are served on Tuesdays and Thursdays also at Rosburg Hall. Menus for the coming week include: Thursday, the 13th-beef barley soup, half a turkey sandwich, lettuce, tomato and cheesecake with berries; Tuesday, the 18th-Teriyaki pork, brown rice, stir-fry vegetables, sliced oranges and fortune cookies; Thursday, the 20th-chicken and rice casserole, peas and cauliflower and berry tart.

Birthdays being celebrated this week include Rod Smith, Kristen Edwards, Shawn Matthews, Kristi Mattson, Sarah Rugo, Joshua Phipps, Tim Wirkkala, Lisa Donlon, Terry Larson, Tracy Larson, Kelly Faddis, Mary Smith, Lyle Haataja, Adam Bighill, Martha Tienhaara, Sean Eastham, Roxanne Stephan, Gail Magnuson, Charles Moore, Joe Hurst, Lenna Wirkkala, Tim Helvey, Jennifer Penttila, Fidel Hernandez, Sylvia Helvey, Jeff Indermark and Amber Haven.

Happy Anniversary wishes go out to Karl and Debbie Smith, Ron and Jennifer Salme and Carl and Anita Adair. Wishing you many more.

We had an unexpected visit from my cousin Davey Hammonds and his girlfriend Rhonda, from Alaska. They are enjoying our little corner of the world before returning to Alaska. He is the middle son of David and Claudine Hammonds of Grays River and they have certainly enjoyed the surprise visit. Their daughter, Melinda and her family were able to spend the weekend here as well, so it was quite a nice mini family reunion.

After he has enjoyed all the excitement of visiting family I want to wish a very special Happy Birthday to my wonderful Uncle David Hammonds this week. It’s so nice to have you here in Grays River, and I hope you have the best birthday ever.
