It sure is nice to have so much sunshine lately. I might even get the lawn mowed one more time before the rains make it impossible. The chill in the morning and evening air are sure signs of fall making an appearance, but the leaves haven’t really had much of a change in their colors yet.

Derek Heitsch has brought some of his cows in to graze on one of our fields for a few days. It’s fun to watch them and not have the responsibility of taking care of them. Does that make me lazy?

The Halloween/Harvest celebration is fast approaching on October 29 at Johnson Park. Gather up the family and make it an evening of fun, food and trick or treating. Top it off with a movie and free popcorn.

Trick or treats will be available from 4 p.m to 5:30 p.m.at the spooky west entrance of the building. The harvest room will be open at 4 p.m. where you can purchase hot dogs and pop for two tickets (tickets will be sold at the door for food and games at a price of four tickets for $1) each, and popcorn is free with the G-rated old movies. Games will be available for the youngsters in the activities room at the North entrance as well as face painting and a cake walk.

We are still looking for some large pumpkins and some more volunteers to help run the games. If you are interested, please call Penny Gregory or Cindy Lahti.

Our Grays River Valley Library and Community Computer Center are doing very well with the new hours. Thanks to our volunteers and the users of the venue it has become a pretty nice place to spend time. We are still making a few changes and if you have suggestions on how we can make it better, please don’t hesitate to let us know.

Ever wonder who comes to our library? Would you believe – the Schwanns driver? Yes indeed, Eddy makes a stop every couple of weeks and even makes a few sales while he browses the paperback library on his break in the afternoon. He has even offered to donate a few books from his personal library. What a guy!

Grays River United Methodist Church Friendship Circle’s Stew Luncheon & Bazaar will also be held Saturday, October 29 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The menu will include yummy home made beef stew, cheesy bread, coffee, hot mulled cider and dessert. I for one will be there to bring home a delicious meal and do some holiday shopping. The bake sale is always a hit as well as the crafts, paintings, original clothing and home decorator items. Take out lunch is also an option.

The annual Holiday Bazaar and lunch sponsored by the Rosburg Community Club at Rosburg Hall will take place on November 5 and you can once again enjoy their famous baked chicken with a wonderful salad bar for a nominal fee. You can also get a start on your holiday shopping while you are there at the holiday bazaar. There is always a huge assortment of hand made craft holiday items and baked goodies for sale. If you are interested in renting a space for the event, please contact Barbara Rose.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that normally meets at Rosburg Hall will be meeting at the Valley Bible Church on the 26th for tater tot casserole, mixed veggies, bread and dessert.

Rosburg Senior Community Lunches sponsored by CAP will include the following menus this week: Thursday, the 20th-chicken and rice casserole, peas and cauliflower and berry tart; Tuesday, the 25th-chicken pot pie, broccoli spears, tossed salad and carrot cake; Thursday, the 27th-lasagna, Cesar salad, sliced oranges, garlic bread and panna cotta.

Speaking of birthdays, I picked up my cousin, Claudette last Saturday at the train station in Kelso, to surprise my wonderful Uncle David Hammonds for his 80th birthday. He has had lots of family around this past few weeks, and I think he’s beginning to enjoy it, especially since he was pretty much kicked out of the kitchen so someone else could do the cooking instead of him. Claudette is from Juneau, Alaska and will be staying a couple of weeks with her parents David and Claudine in Grays River.

His nephew Ken Hammonds and his wife Judy were also here from Alaska for several days and Ken celebrated his own birthday the day after his uncle’s. Family is wonderful.

Another special Happy Birthday to our oldest daughter Danielle Stewart who will be celebrating her 45th. Hard to believe. You have come a long way, girl. We are so proud of you. Wishing you a very special day.

Happy Anniversary wishes to Wayne and Becky Erickson this week. Becky grew up on the property that we now own, and her parents built our house that burned last year. You are welcome to come by anytime, Becky and see the few changes we have made in the new house after we rebuilt. We always loved the layout designed by your family, so not much is different.
