School gets ready for graduation

Is anyone else being swarmed with hummingbirds? I have never seen so many at the same time. My feeders have to be refilled daily and sometimes there are two birds eating at the same time on each of the little flowers for a total of six birds on each feeder. They are amazing little creatures. My cats are just about crazy looking at them through the window, especially when a bird will hover on the other side of the glass where the cat’s staring.

News from Naselle:

Less than two weeks left in the 2012 school year, with several important events coming up before the last day. Tonight, (Thursday), the community is invited to enjoy the elementary music program at 7 p.m. On June 6 the Evening of Excellence will be held at 7 p.m. at which time those students who have worked very hard will be recognized.

Graduation for the Naselle-Grays River Valley Class of 2012 will take place on June 9 at 4 p.m. Kindergarten graduation will be held on June 11 at 6:30 p.m. and 8th grade move-up will be held on May 12 at 6 p.m. The last day of school will be June 14 and classes will be dismissed at 10:30 a.m.

A very special Naselle couple will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 10. Cliff and Kaye Weimer would like to greet family and friends at the First Lutheran Church located at 725 33rd Street in Astoria between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to help them commemorate their years together. This couple is a true inspiration for everyone in their involvement with community and their faith.

Other news from the Westend:

Mark your calendar for a great weekend of fun. Make your way to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds in Skamokawa for the 12th annual Scholarship Barbecue and Sturgeon Derby and the seventh annual Rods and Reels Car Show proudly sponsored by Wahkiakum Dollars for Scholars Foundation and the Naselle-Grays River Valley Education Association. This event provides scholarships to deserving students at both Naselle High School and Wahkiakum High School. In 2011, a total of $22,000 was successfully raised with the generous help of volunteers and the participation of all the attendees.

This fun filled family friendly day begins with sturgeon fishing for the biggest and best fish of the day. You must be registered in order to participate. The weigh in begins at 1 p.m. and closes at 3:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds. The salmon barbecue will be serving an awesome dinner starting at 4:30 p.m. and the raffle drawings and prizes will be distributed at 4:30 p.m. as well.

Bring the whole family and enjoy the beautiful cars on display at the car show, raffles, a free trout fishing pond for kids 12 and under, great food, good friends, and the Naselle Marimba Band will be performing for your pleasure between noon and 2 p.m. All of the proceeds from this event will be used to benefit scholarship programs at our high schools.

If you have questions or need more info please call Pat Kehrli at 360 849-4193.

The Wahkiakum Sheriff’s office and the Fire Department are gearing up for a couple of softball games to build up an inventory of canned goods and non-perishable items for the two local food banks. Bring the family, donate some food items and enjoy the two game Guns and Hoses Softball Tournament. The first game will be played on June 9 at Wahkiakum High School at 1 p.m. and the second game will also be played at the same location on June 16 at 4 p.m. Items needed for the food banks include canned vegetables and fruits, tuna and other canned meats, peanut butter, pasta and sauces for pasta, chili, canned and packaged soups, crackers, cereal (both hot and cold), hamburger helper, and any other non perishable food. Also needed are laundry soap and other hygiene items for both sexes. Let’s all pitch in and get our food banks back on track to help those who need their services. Root for your favorite team.

The Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park (old Rosburg School) in Rosburg will hold a community picnic on July 21 of this year. Details are being ironed out, but I will keep everyone posted as they emerge. As of now, it will be a pot luck type event, with barbecue as well as some fun things to do. If you are interested in helping out, or have a question or suggestion please call Cindy Lahti at 465-2880.

I’m sure that most of the locals have either heard of or attended the annual Pig Roast/Campout at the home of Poul and Zenaida Toftemark which is held the first weekend of August each year (sometimes the end of July) in Rosburg. This year Poul and Zenaida are in the middle of the long drawn out process of adopting a handsome young man named Elmer from the Philippines who is seven years old. Therefore the event will not take place this year. They hope everyone will understand and wish them well in this loving endeavor. Maybe the tradition will begin again once their family is together and home.

I for one want to commend them and the other families in our community who are sharing their homes and their love for children who otherwise might not have such a bright future. Please keep Poul, Zenaida and Elmer in your prayers and hopefully the rest of this process will move along smoothly so they can all come home to Rosburg as a complete family.

Leslie Bolton asked me to thank all the volunteers that met at the Rosburg Store on the May 19 and went out on the roadways to collect debris. Even with the tall growth along the roads, they were able to pick up about 50 pounds of trash. Next year they plan to do this project a little earlier in the season, before the vegetation takes over the edge of the roadways. Thank you, Leslie, for sponsoring this project and rewarding the volunteers with lunch and a sense of pride in their community.

Senior lunches are provided for the Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall, prepared and served at noon by Pat Potter and her crew of volunteers. Nutritious meals are available to all senior citizens every week with occasional special events such a pot luck, silent auctions and bingo. Come join in with friends and enjoy a great meal.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays senior lunches are also served at the Rosburg Hall location and are sponsored by CAP. The menu for today (Thursday) is pulled pork sandwich, pineapple coleslaw, Oregon bean medley and berry parfait. These lunches are a great way to eat healthy, meet new friends and spend some quality time out and about.

Happy Birthday wishes this week go out to Alex Bighill, Oscar Penttila, Derek Johnson, Cramer Smith, Kerry York, Jacob Eaton, Kaden Cooper, Kyle Burkhalter, Charlie Otterson, Grace Zimmerman, Tylor Russel, Tom Thompson, Abigail Bennett, Bob Engelson, Jordan Badger, John Indermark, Mindy Penttila, Brenda See, Errin Smalley, Kyle Donlon and David Bighill. Have a wonderful, special day.

Happy Anniversary to John and Anne-Marie Didion, Gerrad and Courtney Lemon, Kyle and Jenni Isaak, Gene and Wendy Anderson, Ryan and Cherise Bjornsgard, Tim and Deanna Wilson and Richard and Linda Gray. Wishing you many more celebrations together.
