Silent auction begins today

Even though school is out for the summer break, it doesn’t mean that plans aren’t being made for classes and events for next year. The Naselle School Board members will meet on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are public and community members are encouraged to attend.

The Friends of the Naselle Library are holding their second Annual Silent Auction from June 14 through June 26. Auction items will be on display at the Naselle Timberland Library in Naselle during regular library hours. The auction will end with a community picnic on June 26 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Winners will be announced at the picnic. Items for auction include handmade baby quilts, horse riding lesson, a custom made sterling silver messy nest pendant, local organic strawberries, a party with Thistle Down at the Magic Tree house, a handmade fused glass dish, baked goods, watercolor painting, as well as many more donations from local businesses and artisans. The 45th Annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival will take place in Astoria next weekend. Join the fun at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds in Astoria for one of the longest running Midsummer Festivals in our country, on June 22-24.

This year’s celebration will spotlight a selection of over 50 booths featuring traditional foods, arts and crafts, demonstrations, goods and products. Sample specialty foods prepared by local Scandinavian lodges. In addition come listen to some great music at the popular Midsummer Beer Garden featuring brews from Astoria Brewing Company.

The Grays River Valley Library and Community Computer Center at Johnson Park are open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Come on in and check out all our books, audio books, movies, music and check your e-mail or do some research on one of our five computers. It’s all free, and is supported by donations and volunteers.

There are lots of other activities happening at the center on a weekly basis. The pinochle card group meets on Monday afternoons beginning at about noon, Yoga classes on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m., art group on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m., aerobics on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and TOPS (take off pounds sensibly) meets on Thursdays at 2 p.m. in the exercise room. Check the calendars at either entrance of the building for more events and activities.

On July 21, Johnson Park will host a community potluck/picnic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring your favorite dish to share, and the whole family for an afternoon of fun. Johnson Park will provide barbecued hot dogs.

The ball field will be available for a friendly game or two. If you have an idea for games, please contact Cindy Lahti. Mary Steller will also be there with her famous donkeys from Donkey Holler.

Jazz band, MP-6, from Longview will be at Cathlamet’s Pioneer Church tomorrow (Friday), at 7 p.m, for an evening of swingin’ jazz, Latin beats, blues and everything in between. The show is co-sponsored by Wahkiakum Title & Escrow Company and the Pioneer Community Association.

This group features Michael Paul on trumpet and flugelhorn, Bill Comin on drums, Dennis Yalch on bass, Jeff Steinbock on tenor saxophone, and Bob Nelson on guitar.

Tickets are available prior to the performance for $12 at the Bank of the Pacific and at Wahkiakum Title & Escrow, 68 Main Street in Cathlamet, and for $15 the night of the show. For more information, contact Jennifer at (360) 795-3741.

Don’t forget the second round of the Guns and Hoses softball tournament between the Wahkiakum Sheriff’s office and the Fire Department in an effort to benefit our food banks. Bring your whole family, donate some canned food or any non perishable food items and enjoy this fun competition for a wonderful cause. The final game will take place at Wahkiakum High School on Saturday at 4 p.m. Root for your favorite team.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch that meets at Rosburg Hall will enjoy another home cooked meal by Pat Potter and served by her volunteer group on the 21st.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays senior lunches are also provided at the above location, sponsored by CAP. Menus for the coming week include: Thursday, the 14th-chicken enchiladas, Spanish rice, fiesta vegetables and raspberry bars; Tuesday, the 19th-beef pot roast, steamed potatoes, carrots and mushrooms, tossed salad and pineapple upside down cake; Thursday, the 21st-chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, broccoli Normandy, sliced oranges and carrot cake.

Our community is fortunate to have lunches available here three days a week, where folks can spend time enjoying a nutritious meal and visiting with friends and neighbors.
