Sports calendar for the coming week for the Naselle Comet teams: Thursday, home baseball and fastpitch against Ocosta at 4 p.m. and a home track meet at 4 p.m .; Friday, home baseball and fastpitch against Ilwaco at 4 p.m .; Monday, baseball at NW Christian at 4 p.m .; Tuesday, fastpitch at Warrenton at 4 p.m .; Wednesday, home baseball and fastpitch against Wahkiakum at 4 p.m. and middle school track meet at home at 4 p.m. Go Comets!

The Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend.

Students will be released at 12:30 p.m. on March 20 for teacher in-service.

Don’t forget the annual ESA Alpha Theta Senior Citizen Dinner this Sunday at the Naselle Assembly of God Church located at 278 Knappton Road in the social room at 12:30 p.m. The free dinner is open to all Naselle/Grays River Valley senior citizens 60 years and older. This year’s Pacific County Republicans annual Lincoln Day Dinner will feature a Second Amendment focus. Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, will be the featured speaker at the prime rib dinner and auction on March 23 in the Willapa Harbor Community Center at First and Alder St. in South Bend. Tickets cost $25. The social hour begins at 5 p.m.

In keeping with the Second Amendment theme, there will be a raffle for a Remington 870 shotgun (compliments of Sandy’s Guns and Ammo in Long Beach) and other gun accessories in the silent auction. Donations for the silent auction are being accepted.

Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler will also be in attendance, and speak on the ongoing budget battles in Washington DC, as well as other issues affecting the local area.

The Spaghetti Feed and Auction at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park last Saturday was a huge success. The food was awesome and the service was great. My thanks to all the volunteers and especially to those of you who took the opportunity to enjoy such a fine meal with us and your neighbors. The silent auction items got lots of attention and the winners went home happy with their purchases. Special thanks to Alan and Penny Gregory, Steve and Linda Ramsay, Randy (Splash) and Ramona Collver, Bonnie Kohn, Judy Durrah, Nancy George, Mike and Carrie Backman, Shad, Deanne Bulick, Sarah, Jayson Cooley, and Blair Brady for all your help in making this event a success. Another very special thank you to Gail Robinson, who did an exceptional job of cleaning and vacuuming the halls and the rooms being used for the dinner, and to all the donors of auction items. You folks are wonderful.

Most of us would like to think we are pretty spry and talented, but I must say that the chef for the spaghetti feed is an exceptional octogenarian and a really fun character. Nick Nickolas, from Tacoma, is Penny Gregory’s father and he has put together fundraiser spaghetti feeds for lots of people before. It was his suggestion, originally, that brought the event to fruition with the help of a few local volunteers and his son Nick Nickolas II helping out in the kitchen. Nick was also instrumental in getting quite a few items donated from his church to our kitchen which helped us get approved for catering, preparing food and enabling us to serve meals in our own cafeteria. So, to Nick, a huge thank you for all your support, your great spaghetti recipe, and all your hard work in helping us out. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

According to Darrel Sotka, “It must be that there water in the garden of Eden” that has caused an exceptionally high rate of twins to start the calving season on Sotka’s Eden Valley Ranch, located near Rosburg. Darrel is a fourth generation farmer and the ranch has been in the Sotka family for 118 years.

So far he has had five sets of healthy twin calves from the first 25 cows to give birth. That’s a 20 percent rate compared to the normal rate of twins from Black Angus cattle at less than one percent, and even more amazing, all five cows have accepted all the calves. There are no bottle babies so far.

Another neighboring farmer, Derek Heitsch, also has a set of twin calves this season. I love watching these little guys romp and play with the other calves in the fields.

Don’t forget the free Friday night movies at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. If you are a James Bond fan, you won’t want to miss this Friday night’s feature film. The show starts at 7 p.m. and concessions are available. The night features good company and good fun for free!

There’s a new group at the Grays River Valley Center- I-PUG. (iPad users group). If you own an iPad and would like to meet with others who also use one, please meet in the Grays River Valley Library/Community Computer Center on the second and fourth Fridays of the month at 1 p.m. Come and share some of your ideas and learn from others what they have discovered by using their iPad.

The Rosburg Senior Lunch Bunch that meets every Wednesday at noon in the Rosburg Hall will enjoy a late St. Patrick’s Day dinner on March 20 which will include corned beef and cabbage, spuds, carrots, rye bread and dessert. You may even see a leprechaun or two still hanging around for the meal. On March 27 you won’t want to miss the annual Easter Dinner potluck. Bring a dish to share and enjoy a wonderful time with some great company. These senior meals are prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew every week.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays senior meals are also served at the above location and are sponsored by CAP.

We are looking forward to visiting with some family from California this coming week. Our two daughters and their families will be here for a few days, and I must say that I am looking forward to some much needed “Grammie time” with four of our grandchildren.
