Johnson Park a very busy facility

Wow, the sunshine has been wonderful. I even had the opportunity to mow the lawn over the weekend. Lots of other folks were doing the same, and the smell of new mown grass was in the air. Unfortunately, after the first mowing, you really have to keep up with the fast growing grass on a regular basis. Oh well, it’s actually relaxing to sit on the mower for a few hours and see the progress as you cut the tall grass.

News from Naselle:

Naselle-Grays River Valley students will be back in the classroom on April 8 after a week off for Spring break.

Sports schedule for Comet teams this coming week: Monday, the 8th-baseball and fast pitch in Naselle with Taholah at 4 p.m .; Wednesday, the 10th-middle school track meet at Valley at 4 p.m .; Thursday, the 11th-baseball and fast pitch with Wishkah in Naselle at 3:30 p.m. and track at Raymond at 4 p.m. Go Comets!

The Comet Booster Club will hold their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday, the 9th at 5:30 p.m.

Other news from the Westend:

The Grays River Habitat Enhancement District will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, the 10th at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park (old Rosburg School) at 6 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend.

Nothing to do on Friday night? Grab the kids and head up to the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park, and be there at 7 p.m. for the free Friday night movie. This week’s recently released selection is a Disney movie and is rated PG for the whole family. Remember, the movie is free, and concessions are available. Hot buttered popcorn, pop, coffee (if you want it), and candy, at very reasonable prices. Bring the family, sit down for a great evening of viewing on our new big screen with surround sound, grab a bag of buttered popcorn or a candy bar and a soda. Call 465-2310 for the name of the movie and the schedule of upcoming shows. An evening with your friends and neighbors is never wasted, so check us out.

Got an I pad? Join in with a few other owners and learn what they know, and share what you know. The IPUG (I pad users group) meets on the second and fourth Fridays of each month in the Grays River Valley Library at Johnson Park at 1 p.m.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, April 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Make your way to the Rosburg Hall for the annual chicken dinner sponsored by the Rosburg Community Club. Treat yourself and your family to a wonderful dinner of baked chicken with all the trimmings and the “to die for” home made desserts.

Funds raised at this event insures that the hall will be maintained, scholarships will be awarded and much more. The Rosburg Community Club is a very small (and dwindling) group of ladies who dedicate themselves and their time to the Rosburg Hall and to keeping it going.

The history that has been made in the building has affected or been affected by almost every family in the area. Events, such as weddings, receptions, birthday celebrations, reunions, meetings of all sorts, etc. have been held in the hall over the past decades. Let’s all remember that, and support this function and all the other fundraisers on tap for this purpose. The Rosburg Community Club meets once a month on the third Thursday of each month at the hall at 7 p.m. If you are interested in helping them out or in joining the group, please call Barbara Rose or Sonja Kruse.

The Grays River Valley Library is happy to announce that we have two new volunteers. Sylvia Coster and Mikijah Phillips are students who are fulfilling some of their community service hours in the library. These two young ladies are turning out to be very quick learners, very industrious, and very helpful. We certainly appreciate their help. Any other young folks out there who might be interested in volunteering at Johnson Park? Call me at 465-2060 or Penny Gregory at 465-2775.

The Sheriff’s office annex at Johnson Park is open on Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m. If you have questions or would just like to chat with a deputy, this is your opportunity. The Westend is fortunate to have this resource available to us, and we appreciate it.

Still lots of things going on at the Grays River Valley Center, and there is something for everyone. The library and computer center are open on Mondays from 3-7 p.m. and on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1-5 p.m. We are in the process of upgrading our computers. The library and computer center are FREE, there are no fees charged except for printing.

Mondays, the card group meets at noon at the GRVC (Grays River Valley Center) for an afternoon of pinochle; Tuesday morning the sewing room is open and available at 10 a.m .; Yoga classes are taught at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m .; the art group meets on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m .; TOPS (take off pounds sensibly) group meets on Thursdays at 2 p.m. in the exercise room; Friday is Free Movie Night showing recently run features at 7 p.m. For more information, check out the bulletin boards at both entrances of the building, or call 465-2310. Sponsorships are available to families for only $65 per year, or to individuals for $45 per year. That includes use of the exercise room and gym at any time, if not in use. If you are using the facilities and are not a sponsor, we ask that you donate $2.00 per visit to be used for the high cost of heating the facility. Donations are gladly accepted, and volunteers are appreciated.

Now that the weather is getting nicer, you can check out the walking trail at Johnson Park, with a short walk through the trees. If you would like to donate some time to grooming/maintaining the trail please let me know and I can put you in touch with the right folks. Soon the back stop for the baseball field will be complete so you can make plans for a ball game.

Johnson Park/Grays River Valley Center belongs to the people of the community, and the Advisory Board only works for you to oversee the things that need to and are being done here. Please enjoy the park and the center, help us maintain it by picking up after your pets, taking your trash with you when you leave, and by not driving on the grass. We are proud of the accomplishments made so far, and hope you are proud to use the facilities.

It’s early yet, but not too early to make plans to attend the annual Spring Tea and Luncheon sponsored by the Friendship Circle of the Grays River United Methodist Church. This event is always fun and benefits a wonderful group. This year’s tea will take place on Sunday, May 5 and the theme will be “School Days.”

Doors will open at the Rosburg Hall at 11:30 a.m. to give you time to check out all the raffle prizes and visit with friends. Lunch is served at 12:30 followed by a special program and the raffle drawings (if your ticket is drawn, you can take your choice of the prizes). A suggested donation of $8 is requested at the door. This is always a fun event for everyone.

The Wednesday Rosburg Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a nice home cooked meal with friends, prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. Menus for the next two weeks: April 10- stew, hot rolls and dessert; April 17-hamburger stroganoff over noodles, veggies, garlic bread and dessert.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, senior meals are also served at the above location and are sponsored by CAP. These meals are served by a crew of volunteers.
