Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults. If you can’t make opening night, you will have several opportunities. Performances will be held on May 4 and 5 with matinees at 2 p.m., and next weekend on May 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. Let’s show our support for all their hard work on this production and take in at least one performance and make it a fun family outing. These performances are always great.

Other news from the Westend:

“School Days” is the theme for this year’s Spring Tea and Luncheon sponsored by the Friendship Circle of the Grays River United Methodist Church. It is scheduled to take place at the Rosburg Hall May 5, with doors opening at 11:30 a.m.

Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and you will be entertained by yet another production by these talented folks to commemorate “school days.” The raffles at this event are always fun with many beautiful prizes to choose from if your ticket is drawn. A donation of $8 at the door is suggested. For more information, please call 465-2740 or 484-7749.

The Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park will host its second annual Plant, Book and Bake Sale and Soup luncheon on Saturday, May 18. We are still accepting plants for the sale and we are also asking the talented bakers in the area to donate some of their favorite baked goods. For more information, please call Penny Gregory at 465-2775.

We are also looking forward to art on display by two local artists, Beverly Wallace and Samuel Zimmerman.

Helping Hand Food Bank is still interested in bringing a food bank to the Rosburg area and would like to set up at Johnson Park, but in order for it to move forward we need your help. If you are interested in working on this project, please contact Mary Dasher at Helping Hand Food Bank.

We know there is a need for a food bank on this end of the county but the Johnson Park Advisory Board doesn’t have enough volunteers to man the project although we can provide the space. If you have a few hours a month and are interested in giving back to your community, give us a call and we can direct you to how you can help.

The Grays River Valley Center is in desperate need of a few more volunteers. With health issues in several of our volunteer families, some have had to severely limit their time on site. Do you have a couple hours a week, maybe to work in the library/computer center, help out with some of the fundraising projects, some groundskeeping, or anything else that needs doing? We would certainly appreciate it. Contact me or Penny Gregory.

There are still lots of things going on at the Grays River Valley Center. Come on up and check it out. Arlene Stefan is available every Tuesday morning at the sewing room, and she would like to put together a few classes. With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day coming up, how about some of you kids learning how to make an apron for barbequing or a handy pot holder? Or if you have a more complicated project in mind, she can help you out as well. Is anyone interested in a quilting class, making clothing or items for charity? Don’t hesitate to call or stop by on Tuesdays.

Are you an exercise person or do you have some expertise in helping others use equipment safely? If so, please contact us. We would like to set up some kind of a routine program for the public and have some fun as well.

Is there any interest in dance instruction of all types? We have a talented young lady in our area who might be interested in providing that service. Let me know and I will pass the word.

It’s still early yet, but we need to get moving on our 75th Birthday Celebration of the old Rosburg School and the second Annual Community Picnic/Potluck to be held on July 21 at Johnson Park. It is listed in the 2013 event calendar as a class reunion but that isn’t quite right. We will be celebrating the school’s 75th birthday, and we would love to have as many former students and teachers as possible to celebrate with us. If you are interested in taking on the project of organizing a class reunion at the same time, that would also be wonderful. We hope to have lots of folks there to tell stories and share photos. However, we don’t have the manpower to do it all. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out.

The Johnson Park Advisory Board members will be barbecuing hamburgers for this event and ask that you bring a potluck dish to share. There will be games and tours of the grounds, a visit by the critters from Donkey Holler (hopefully), and other fun activities. We look forward to making this a successful and family oriented event. Call us if you can help.

There will be some changes in the free Friday night movies at the Grays River Valley Center this month. Instead of the scheduled movie on May 10, a special showing of “Bully” will be shown on Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. There will be no movie on May 17 as we will be preparing the building and grounds for the fundraising sale and luncheon on Saturday. The rest of the month will be movies as usual. Concessions will be available each movie night. Call 465-2310 for a full schedule of movies.

You will enjoy movies in a comfy setting, with our new projector, on our new bigger screen. If you are so inclined you can even bring your own chair or bean bag pillow.

IPUG (Ipad users group) will not be meeting until further notice. For more information please call Judy Durrah.

The Grays River Habitat Enhancement District will hold their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 8 at 6 p.m. at the Grays River Valley Center. Landowners are encouraged to attend.

The 29th Annual Great White Tail Run will take place this year on Saturday, May 18 with registration at 8:30 a.m. and start time at 10 a.m. The races (10K, 5K and 2 mile) will be run as usual through the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge in Skamokawa. Registration fees are as follows: pre-run, $10 without a shirt or $20 with a shirt, on race day $12 without a shirt and $25 with a shirt. Add $1 if you are bringing your canine friend to race with you.

This annual race is sponsored by the Washington State University 4-H Youth Development Program and is a fundraiser for Wahkiakum County’s 4-H Program. All proceeds will be used to benefit the county program.

For further information, call (360) 465-2275 or (360) 795-3278.

The Rosburg Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each Wednesday at noon for a wonderful home-cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, CAP sponsors senior lunches as well at the same location. This is a great opportunity for seniors to enjoy nutritious meals three days a week and to get out and about with your friends and neighbors.

Happy Birthday to the following celebrants this week: Jeanette Grimberg, Just Thomas, Barbara Combs, Jonathan Bates, Carl Smith, Lonnie Eaton, Koen Rogers, Dan Stephan, Gene Maddox Jr., Jarred Laney, Berniece Helton, Wesley Bjornsgard, Julie Hampson, Carol Haven, Kenzi Wirkkala, Marilee Wirkkala, Debee Bauer, Jon Wirkkala, Angie Calvert, Allyn Bauer and Parker Kilponen.

Here’s a special belated birthday to a wonderful Grays River friend, Beverly Wallace. I hope your special day was as special as you. Wishing you many more.

Del and I were a little under the weather this past weekend, so we were unable to attend the 80th birthday bash for Norm Bolton. I spoke with him on Monday and he told me “It was great, a good party, lots of laughs, delicious food, wonderful friends and family, lots of photo memories and an all-around unforgettable celebration.” He wanted me to tell everyone thank you for being there, for all the good wishes, food, and friendship. I’m sure everyone wishes you many more wonderful celebrations, Norm. Besides, it’s a good excuse for another party.

As soon as he gets rested up a bit, he and Joyce will be headed east to visit with a couple of grandsons, one in Pullman and the other in Montana. Have a safe and fun trip.

Happy Anniversary to Clyde and Melany Bloom, Jonathan and Cassie Chandler, Nate and Holly Engelson, Mike and Diane Matthews, Larry and Yvonne Howell and George and Pat Vernon.

Get well soon wishes go out to a couple of my favorite ladies. They are probably giving each other lots of encouragement at NW Continuum in Longview. Virginia Wendelin and Marilyn Gudmundson have both had procedures and are working hard at their rehabilitation. I hope that they will both be home soon. We miss you.

Are you looking for a sheep of your very own? I understand that Georgene Scott is looking for homes for her flock. If you are interested, give her a call.

Looking for good homegrown brown eggs? I see signs up at Jim and Lilah Lincoln’s house (her hens are hugged on a daily basis, so the eggs must be good), in Grays River and also signs at Walter Deege’s in Deep River. Remember to shop local if you can, and if it’s one of your neighbors that you are helping out, so much the better. By the way, their eggs are delicious.
