Many activities scheduled in area

It looks like we have reverted to spring weather again. Although the sun was nice, I do like to see it cool down a bit, and I do like the rain. Besides, isn’t rain the reason we live in such a beautiful green place?

News from Naselle:

The District track meet will be held in Raymond on Thursday (today) at 3 p.m. Good luck, Comet competitors. The state meet will take place in Cheney on May 24 and 25.

Other school events coming up as the year winds down: May 20- high school music concert at 7 p.m .; May 22- elementary music program at 7 p.m.

The Naselle Grays River Valley School Board will meet on May 21 at 6:30 p.m.

The Naselle Congregational United Church of Christ located at 14 Parpala Road will hold its annual Trash and Treasures Sale on May 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Browse through the many items available from quilts, crafts and other treasures. Lunch is also available beginning at 11 a.m. for a $6 donation and includes hot dogs, potato salad and a beverage.

Westend news:

There are lots of activities around the county this weekend, but I hope everyone will try and take time to join me at the second annual Plant, Book and Bake Sale and Soup Luncheon hosted by the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, please call Penny Gregory at 465-2775.

Volunteers will be at the center all day on Friday, so if you have plants to donate, or baked goods to donate, please don’t hesitate to drop them by. We certainly appreciate the generosity of all the donors, and want to remind you that this is your center for many activities, so you are enabling us to continue and grow through your giving. We can still use plants and baked goods. If necessary, we can have someone pick them up. Call Penny Gregory at 465-2775, the Grays River Valley Library at 465-2310, or me at 465-2960.

A tasty soup lunch is also available at this event, featuring several delicious homemade soups including a vegetarian selection, taco soup, a 15-bean soup and chicken noodle soup. There is no charge for the soup lunch but you are welcome to leave a donation to help with ongoing expenses for the center. We have a nice selection of beautiful plants or veggie starts to complete or add to your garden, lots of wonderful books on hand at reasonable prices, and baked goods for sale donated by our talented bakers in the area.

As an added attraction, we will be showcasing the artwork of two very talented local artists, Beverly Wallace and Samuel Zimmerman. Though these two artists are generations apart in age (Beverly, an octogenarian and Samuel, a teenager), their love of beauty and the fun of producing their interpretation of that beauty to share with others have formed a very special bond between the two. In next week’s article I will include a short biography on each of these talented people, and I invite you to come on Saturday and enjoy their work.

Due to the fact that we will be setting up for the Saturday event, there will be no free Friday night movie this week. Movies will resume on May 31.

Something new has been added to the Grays River Valley Library schedule. We will be doing a storytime for toddlers and pre-school children on the last Friday of each month at 10 a.m. We will be reading age appropriate stories that will last about 30 minutes. If the interest is there, we will do it more often, so come on in and check it out. Let’s make this a fun outing for all. We may even have some very special guest readers coming in on occasion. For more information, please call Ramona Collver at 465-2597 or the library at 465-2310.

A special meeting will be held on May 22 at 6 p.m. in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park to work on details of the 75th Birthday Celebration of the Rosburg School in conjunction with the second annual Community Potluck/Picnic which will be held on July 21, 2013. Please join the Johnson Park Advisory Board members and bring some ideas or find out what you can do to help. We can use the help of anyone who is willing to give us a hand, so please consider stepping up to the plate to become a volunteer.

The Wednesday Rosburg Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week at the Rosburg Hall for a wholesome meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. Come join the fun.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lunch is also served at the above location and sponsored by CAP. Menus for the week ahead include: May 16-Swedish meatballs, egg noodles with kale, orange barley salad and peach cobbler; May 21-pepper steak, mashed potatoes, corn and carrots and apricot bread pudding; May 23-chicken Romesco, pureed hominy, spinach salad and caramel custard.

Happy Birthday wishes to the following this week: Dave Welsh, Boyd Wirkkala, Randy Heriot, Corey Wood, McKenna Anderson, Nikki Ford Hoven, Aliisa Wirkkala, Kevin Durrah, Randy Eaton, Jeff Lee, Steve Ullakko, Steve Wirkkala, Loren Rosa, Ed Hunt, Jeremy Jordan, Spencer Lewis, Jais Burke, Bill Coop, Irene Blake, Linda Stover, Jim Larson and Hank Nelson. Wishing all of you a very special day.

Happy Anniversary to Gary and Tatiana Queener, Shawn and Joni Matthews and to Rob and Wendy Crozier. Wishing you many more celebrations together.

A couple of columns ago I mentioned that some local folks were selling their homegrown eggs, the Deeges in Deep River and Jim and Lilah Lincoln in Grays River. I have one more addition to that list. Rosburg Store is also selling eggs. They all charge the same price, so no matter where you live in this end of the county, you can always get fresh eggs.

I wanted to give an update on my husband’s condition to all those who have been asking. He is now seeing a homeopathic doctor in Portland and has made such improvements that it is hard to believe. He is off his high blood pressure medications and taking supplements while maintaining a near normal blood pressure. The last three times he was in the emergency room, it was for low blood pressure and low heart rate. He is back to walking a mile a day and using his stationary bike for four to five miles a day. Who would have guessed? I am so thankful for everyone’s support and help, and for this extra bonus of better times with my husband. We still have a long way to go, but at least now it looks brighter.
