News from Naselle:

Little 4-year-old Jessi Harman survived a near death accident on Mother’s Day. While her mother was in the barn having the family horse shod, Jessi became entangled in some horse gear and was left lifeless. Due to quick mouth to mouth resuscitation, they were able to get a heartbeat and she was transported via Life Flight to Portland. There is good hope that with therapy Jessi will be able to run, play and return to her old spirited self again. This will require months of therapy which is not covered by insurance.

There will be a Jessi Harman Benefit held for her on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1. On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be barrel races at the Peninsula Saddle Club located at 6407 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. there will be a barbecue dinner and a silent auction at the Long Beach Elk Lodge located at 110 N Pacific Highway in Long Beach. The suggested donation for adults is $15 and for children 12 and under, $8. On Sunday, September 1, there will be a Cowgirl Breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. followed by barrel races from noon to 3 p.m.

Kindergarten screening will take place on Thursday (today), from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be a Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board meeting on Tuesday, August 20 at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Registration for new students will begin on Friday, August 23 for new students and on Monday, August 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration for 12th grade students will take place on August 26 from 6 to 7 p.m., 11th grade students on August 27 from 6 to 7 p.m. and 9th and 10th grade students on August 28 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Other news from the Westend:

When the old Rosburg School was built 75 years ago it was equipped with a lovely room called a library. After the school was no longer being used, that room became a storage room, but now it will once again house thousands of books for your pleasure and reference. The Johnson Park Advisory Board has voted to move our library back to the original location and will also move the computer center to the adjoining room, which will make it more convenient for the users who will be doing online college classes on a bank of computers provided by Lower Columbia College.

That said, the library and computer center will be closed beginning August 19 and will reopen on September 16. During that time we will be painting, waxing, and moving everything to the new location. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

I need to make a correction regarding the sponsorship fees for Johnson Park. The fee for a yearly family sponsorship is $65 and includes your immediate family members. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. The fee for an individual is $45.

A special showing of the movie “Bully” will take place during the Free Friday Night Movies on the August 23, and it is presented by St. James Family Center and The Charlotte House. This movie is geared to grades 6-12 and adults and covers an important and problematic issue. It is recommended that parents accompany their children in grades 6-8. We are hoping for a good turnout of families to see this well done and informational film. Concessions will be available. For more information on this special event, please call Renae Hauff, Prevention Advocate at (360) 795-8612 or (360) 795-6401.

The Genesis Dance Studio instructor, Shellie Burkhalter, will be holding classes for all forms of dance in the Grays River Valley Center beginning on September 9. If you are interested in signing up for classes, please call (360) 703-7609 or email genesisdancestudio@gmail.com For more information, check out her website at: http://www.genesisdancestudio.com.

I had the pleasure of checking out the new restaurant (a pre-opening tour) of Bob and Bev Paul (formerly of the Grays River Café) last week. It is located in Longview at 1140 15th Ave and will be called Bob Paul’s Café. They will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. beginning August 14. If you have been missing their onion rings or clam chowder, now’s your chance.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a wholesome home cooked meal and good companionship. The meals are prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.

Senior meals are also served at the same location on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are sponsored by CAP. Menus for the coming week include: August 15-closed for the Wahkiakum County Fair; August 20-beef Yakisoba, Asian slaw, Mandarin oranges and raspberry mousse; August 22-chili, fiesta veggies, spinach salad, cornbread and tapioca pudding.

Happy Birthday to the following: Colby Engelson, Cathy Francis, Bob Eaton, Alina Ashe, Myka Thompson, Rebecca Strong, Amanda Haataia, Dale Heiner, Michael McIntee, JJ McCullough, Lee Clark, Noah Kent, Rhiana Jacot, Eric Ervest, Travis Pakenen and Stacy Strange. I wish you all a perfect day to celebrate.

Happy Anniversary to Ed and Amy Hunt, Bob and Judy Paavola, Charles and Sharon Rose, Peter and Nancy McGuire, Travis and Jen Boggs, Glen and Shirley Miller, Scott and Lynn Boyle, Jim and Debee Baue, Todd and Jenn Blanchard, Eric and Ashley Hendrickson, Hans and Jenelle Varila, Sean and Jamie Eastham and Regan and Sarah Wirkkala. I wish you many more years of celebrations.

We were so sorry to hear about the disastrous fire out in Eden Valley last week that destroyed the home and other buildings belonging to Randy and Vickie Wirkkala. I understand that no one was hurt, so that was a blessing.
