Registration begins Friday for Naselle schools

August 21, 2013

As you read this column, my husband and I should be sitting in the heat of central California, on a week long visit with three of our kids and seven of our grandkids. Though I’m not looking forward to California, I am excited to see our family and probably a few friends as well.

News from Naselle:

Time once again to register for the new school year at Naselle-Grays River Valley High School. The schedule for students is: Friday, the 23rd and Monday, the 26th for new students from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m .; Monday, the 26th at 6 p.m. for 12th grade students; Tuesday, the 27th at 6 p.m. for 11th grade students and Wednesday, the 28th at 6 p.m. for 9th and 10th grade students.

Local student Grace Zimmerman is organizing a blood drive at the Valley Bible Church on September 5 as her senior project. She has asked me to include a reference in my column, mentioning the upcoming drive, for the next few weeks so as to get the word out and encourage people to donate blood.

Her goal for this blood drive is to get 25 blood donations. Grace is also trying to spread the word about the importance of building up the blood supply in our area which is running very low at the moment. Another of her goals is to continue drives at the Church on a bimonthly basis and taking place year round.

Let’s support this unselfish gesture of good community service, and help her out with this great senior project. Thank you Grace, for this opportunity.

The Appelo Archives Center will be holding a swap meet on Friday, the 30th. For more information about the event please call 484-7103.

The Jessi Harman Benefit will be held on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1. Four year old Jessi was severely injured in an accident on Mother’s Day and these events will be raising funds for therapy that isn’t covered by insurance, in the hope that Jessi will make a full recovery. Let’s lend a hand and have some fun as well, for this little fighter. I’m not sure if an account has been set up for donations, but I will find out and get it in next week’s column.

On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be Barrel Races at the Peninsula Saddle Club located at 6407 Sandridge Road in Long Beach. From 5 to 8 p.m. there will be a BBQ dinner and a silent auction at the Long Beach Elk Lodge located at 110 N Pacific Highway in Long Beach. Suggested donation is Adults: $15 and children 12 and under: $8. On Sunday, September 1 there will be a Cowgirl Breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. followed by Barrel Races from noon to 3 p.m.

Other news from the west end:

Wahkiakum PUD customers west of the top of KM to the Pacific County line will experience a scheduled power outage for electrical maintenance on Saturday night, August 24 at midnight through 8 a.m. on Sunday morning, the 25th. For questions or more info please call Wahkiakum PUD at 795-3266 or 465-2171.

Things are moving along pretty smoothly so far with the big move in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. Thanks to Penny Gregory, Randy and Ramona Collver and Steve and Linda Ramsay the floors now have five coats of wax, excess shelving has been removed, paint has been purchased, and prep work is beginning so the paint can be applied. If you are interested in giving us a hand, it would certainly be appreciated. Are you a student who needs some community service? We can find work for you as well. To lend a hand, please call 465-2310.

Remember that the Grays River Valley Library and Community Computer Center will be closed until September 16 as we work to complete the project.

A special showing of the movie “Bully” will take place during the Free Friday Night Movies on the 23rd, and it is presented by St. James Family Center and The Charlotte House. This movie is geared to grades 6-12 and adults and covers an important and problematic issue. It is recommended that parents accompany their children in grades 6-8. We are hoping for a good turnout of families to see this well done and informational film. Concessions will be available. For more information on this special event please call Renae Hauff, Prevention Advocate at 360 795-8612 or 360 795-6401. The movie is free.

The Genesis Dance Studio is now accepting applications for classes for all forms of dance in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park beginning on September 9. If you are interested in signing up for classes, please call 360 703-7609 or email genesisdancestudio@gmail.com. For more information, check out her website at: http://www.genesisdancestudio.com.

Tickets will be on sale soon for the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest Dinner in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park, scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 12. The menu will be the same as last year including Steve Ramsay’s delicious sauerbraten with all the trimmings. The beautiful hand made quilt on display at the center will be raffled off at the event along with several other raffle items. Make your plans now, as there are a limited number of tickets being sold for the dinner.

The Grays River United Methodist Church is holding a Free Family Fun Day on September 7 from 2 to 7 p.m. on the church grounds on Highway 4 in Grays River.

Everyone is welcome to join in the games, snacks, and a barbecue with s’mores, and singing around the campfire. Activities for the children include making pinecone bird feeders, face painting, crafts, and an egg hunt. There will also be a special visit by a local donkey. Sounds like a fun afternoon and evening to me.

Do you like candles? Are you interested in a relaxed afternoon with local friends and neighbors? Ramona Collver is hostessing a PartyLite Candle party for anyone interested in attending. It will take place in the cafeteria of the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on Saturday, September 7 at 1 p.m. This is not a Johnson Park function, but simply an informal way to meet and visit with your neighbors. Please join us, bring a friend and enjoy all the wonderful scents available in this candle line. Hope to see you there.
