Halloween events tonight at GRVC

October 30, 2013

My husband, son and I made an impromptu visit to our kids in Oregon this past weekend for a short visit and enjoyed some delicious pub food with some of their own brews at Smith Rock Brewing Company in Redmond. Our daughter, son-in-law, son and daughter-in-law will be celebrating their one year anniversary of opening on November 2 and the business has really turned out to be a huge success for them. They have purchased a building to increase their brewing capabilities and the new equipment will be here in about two weeks. They will be able to brew about eight times as many batches of their beer each week with the larger capacity and will possibly be able to do some distribution of the beer. We are so excited for their success. Note: the food they serve is all fresh, with no freezer or microwave on the premises.

It was nice to return home to sunshine and warm temperatures. In Redmond, it was freezing cold, windy, rainy and even a few snow flurries. Our son, who lives in Bend, got snow in his yard with the promise of more.

Westend news:

Make your way to the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park for our 4th annual All Hallows Eve today (Thursday). Put on your best costume, bring the kids and enjoy a safe and dry evening of Trick or Treating followed by a free Halloween movie after being sufficiently treated from behind each door in the spooky halls of the old school. Trick or Treating will begin at 5 p.m. Free popcorn and punch will be available at the concession stand during the movie. Everything about this evening is for the kids and it’s all free! See you there.

The Rosburg Community Club’s annual Holiday Bazaar will take place on Saturday. Local vendors will be on hand with lots of hand made craft items, food, baked goods, and of course the special lunch. The event is one of the main fundraisers of the year for RCC, and proceeds help to maintain the building, fund scholarships, and all the other community based contributions that this group is known for. For more information, call 465-2234.

Congratulations and a huge thank you for being volunteers in the community go out this week to the Hammonds family of Grays River. Tom Hammonds was named lieutenant with the Grays River Volunteer Fire Department last Thursday evening. Tom is also an EMT and was one of the first responders when my husband had his stroke more than a year ago now. Recently Tom’s wife Tina and his son Thomas received their EMT certifications as well. It’s wonderful to see such a commitment to our community, and I am especially proud because they are my cousins and have chosen to make this community their own in a very generous and special way, by serving all of us. Thank you so much. You make our family very proud.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week at the Rosburg Hall for a home cooked lunch prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. This is an open invitation to all seniors to join with this friendly group for navy bean and ham soup, corn bread and dessert on Wednesday. On the 13th you will enjoy home made stew, hot rolls and dessert. Lunch is served at noon.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, lunches are also served at the above location and are sponsored by CAP.

Happy Birthday to these folks celebrating their big day this coming week: Jeff Eaton, Kevin McNulty, K.J. Keightly-Baker, Joel Forbes, Lorna Batt, Norm Penttila, Angela Helvey, Gwen Snyder, Roy Herrold, Linda Nelson, William Potter and Jim Bauer. Here’s to you and wishing you a wonderful day.

Happy Anniversary wishes to David and Angela Helvey and to Paul and Donna Lindstrom. Wishing you many more celebrations together.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour on Sunday night. It’s that time of year again, and we need all the daylight we can get.
