Westend news

One more bright, shining star has made its way heavenward with the passing of Thea Pyle of Grays River. She was one of the most beautiful, sensitive, articulate, and caring women I have ever met, and I am so thankful to have had her friendship in my life. We spoke not long ago as I was driving on Loop Road and she had just walked down the pathway from their house to the mailbox. She looked lovely that day, the sun was shining and she was upbeat regarding her therapy and their future trip to Mexico. She adored her husband, Bob, her children, and especially her grandchildren, and spoke lovingly about all three of those subjects at our last short visit on the road.

This community will certainly miss the giving nature of this lovely lady, and my thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends. Rest in peace, my friend.

“Living Well in Wahkiakum County,” turned out to be a hugely successful event, for everyone involved. The halls, cafeteria, activity room, Health and Human Services office, sheriff’s office, exercise room, library/computer center and the gymnasium were filled with vendors in a position to give out information to all the attendees. Everyone left with a red bag full of brochures, pamphlets, and information provided by the different service organizations who were there to let folks know what is really available to everyone here in Wahkiakum County and was put together by Terrie Howell, our Community Outreach Coordinator with Wahkiakum County Health and Human Services. Terrie says, "I received nothing but the greatest praise from the vendors and community alike on the need for this type of resource event. Their enjoyment to be a part of and the desire for it to happen again was overwhelming. So I say, way to go Wahkiakum County, we come out shining once again as a great place to live.”

The Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park and the Advisory Board would like to thank Terrie and everyone who attended the event, and congratulate them on a job well done. We look forward to collaboration in the near future with all of you.

The Grays River Valley Library and Community Computer Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will reopen on Monday, the 2nd at 3 p.m.

The Free Friday Night movie at the Grays River Valley Center will be Iron Man 3, a sequel released in May. The film is rated PG-13 and is an action, science fiction fantasy.

Bring the family for a relaxing, casual evening after the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving Day. If you have friends or family from out of town, bring them along and show off our community gathering place at the Grays River Valley Center. Concessions are available with popcorn, pop, candy and coffee. The show begins at 7 p.m. and the movie is free!

The Rosburg Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a home cooked meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. The menu for December 4 is spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and dessert, and for the 11th they will enjoy chili, cheese, onions and dessert. Lunch is served at noon.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, senior meals are also served and are sponsored by CAP. There will be no lunch served today, as the volunteers will likely be at home with their families and friends. Lunches will again resume next week on Tuesday, the 3rd at noon.

Happy Birthday to the following celebrants this coming week: Jamie Bighill, Carson Engelson, Carol Wilson, Bob Miller, Brian Nikolas, Kristi Leeland, John K. Wirkkala, Jeff Ross, Judah Corbin, Kennedy Penttila, Linda Jordan, Kenny Saari, Hannah Liberatore, Tim Haataia, Sulema Zerr, Tricia Bennett, Lori Rose, Jack Strange, Devin Thompson, Brian Stube, Lois Bighill, Wesley Oatfield, Reese Moore, Vickie Corona, Kellyn Pakenen, and Karen Bertroch. Wishing each of you a perfect day.

We have decided to try one more avenue for my husband’s recovery from his stroke-acupuncture. I was very skeptical, but what the heck, nothing ventured-nothing gained, right? We contacted a family friend who has used acupuncture for years, and she recommended a wonderful lady in Astoria. He spent about 30 minutes in a warm room listening to soothing music and just rested quietly, after she had inserted the needles in various spots on his legs, arms, hands and head. When he was done, he was willing to go back, and said it was a very calming and positive experience. We are hoping that it will encourage his body to continue to recover from the effects of his stroke.

Tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day is always a day of reflection and family for me and many others I’m sure. This year has not been an easy one, but I am grateful for the many blessings that have come to this family and to me personally. Our children and grandchildren are healthy and doing well in their lives, our son, Carl has pretty much put his future plans on hold to be at home with us, we have wonderful, supportive friends, and my husband continues to progress in his stroke recovery. All this and much more I have to be thankful for.

We are planning to spend the holiday in Redmond, Ore., with family, and they will be coming here for Christmas. From our house to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.
