What's happening at the Fair?

January 3, 2013

Working outside in this cold weather isn’t much fun, yet wintertime projects at the Fairgrounds continue to be planned and completed. One of our projects is to fix all the little problems some of our buildings have acquired over the years. The horse barn gutters had come loose, sending rain water cascading down the siding and the resulting pools of water were flowing into some horse stalls. Bill Chamberlain and Ed Stevens worked together to put those gutters back to doing their job! They also noticed that the metal roof, probably because of the big winds we get, has pulled the nails up from the roof rafters. They are going to fix this problem by removing the nails and replacing them with some extra long screws that will go deeper into the wood and pull the roofing back down where it belongs. They are doing a great job fixing small problems, that could become bigger problems if not dealt with now.

The “2013 Fair Theme Contest” is going to end in February! Keep sending your ideas to E-mail: wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net or Address: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O.Box 1, Skamokawa, Wa 98647. The Fair Board will select the theme at their February 13th Board meeting. If your theme is picked you will be notified and awarded two bright colored Fair t-shirts and two Fair passes. Good luck to all who have entered their ideas in this contest!

Horse owners sometimes find it’s difficult to keep their horses exercised because we lose some daylight hours in the winter time and most jobs keep them at work until 5:00 PM or later. I have a solution. Switch on our arena lights and ride in the evening at our covered horse arena. If this sounds like fun, first you need to purchase a $50 horse gate key! The $50 fee is for the whole year with unlimited hours of riding unless a special event is planned in the arena or its Fair time. For more information call the Fair office.

Attention all horse owners that trained and rode their horses at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds Arena in 2012. On January 1st I put a new lock on the horse gate. If you would like to use the arena in 2013 its time to purchase your new key. Call Becky at 360-560-0371/795-3480, leave your name, phone number, message and we can meet at the fairgrounds and complete the paperwork.

Tickets For Sale! It’s time to purchase your tickets for the “Valentine Diamond Dinner” held at the Skamokawa Grange on February 9th. Cost is still only $25 per dinner ticket and the price includes a raffle ticket to win a diamond bracelet! The bracelet is beautiful with sparkling diamonds covering the whole bracelet. You can purchase more raffle tickets for the diamond bracelet at $1 each during the dinner. Purchase your dinner tickets at the Cathlamet Bank of the Pacific, from Fair board members or call Becky at 795-3434/560-0371 for out of town purchases. Dinner includes a filet mignon steak cooked on the BBQ to perfection by Commissioner Blair Brady and Mr. Bill Coons, baked potato with all the fixings, a beautiful multi-lettuce salad, a fresh baked roll, dessert, a glass of wine or your choice of beverage. If you are a vegetarian we can BBQ some portabella mushrooms for you, just let your waitress know and she will pass the word to our two BBQ cooks! All proceeds from Wahkiakum County Fair Board fundraising events will support and maintain your 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke @ 795-3480 or 560-0371 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is January 9th, 7:00 p.m., at the Court House 3rd floor meeting room in Cathlamet. The public is welcome to attend.
