Baird named chairman to subcommittee on research and science education

Congressman Baird has been named Chairman of the Subcommittee on Research and Science Education of the House Science and Technology Committee.

This subcommittee handles issues related to education, research and development, information technology, and nanotechnology.
"Looking for ways to increase our country's competitiveness in the fields of math, science and technology, while working to hold our place in the global marketplace will be the cornerstone of the Subcommittee on Research and Science Education's work," said Congressman Baird. "My priorities as chairman will be to increase interest in math, science and engineering careers among our country's high school and college students; promote new technologies; and bolster research opportunities."

In addition to the Subcommittee Chairmanship, Congressman Baird received the following committee assignments:
• House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation; Subcommittee on Highways and Transit; Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment
• House Committee on Science and Technology, Subcommittee on Research and Science Education, Chairman; Subcommittee on Energy & Environment; Subcommittee on Investigations & Oversight
• House Budget Committee
"From improving our nations roadways, to reducing the federal deficit and increasing funding for scientific research and development, these committees oversee issues that aren't important to just Southwest Washington, but to the country as a whole," continued Congressman Baird.

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is responsible for building public infrastructure, including major projects such as highways, bridges, airports, locks and dams, and public transit systems.
House Science Committee has jurisdiction over all research and development of all federally owned or operated nonmilitary energy laboratories; astronautical research and development; civil aviation research and development; environmental research and development; marine research; the National Institute of Standards and Technology; the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); the National Space Council; the National Science Foundation (NSF); the National Weather Service; and, science scholarships and research.
The Committee on the Budget is responsible for drafting Congress' annual budget plan and monitoring action on the budget for the federal government. Congress sets targets for itself on the desired size and composition of the federal budget; Congress enforces these targets by enacting funding and tax legislation. The Budget Committee also has jurisdiction over the operation of the Congressional Budget Office.
