On January 17, the St. James Family Center hosted a luncheon and seminar entitled "Charitable Giving Made Easy" to approximately 50 individuals from Wahkiakum County. The event was sponsored by the Futcher Henry Group and Cowlitz Bank Trust Services.
Sarah Flohr, an SJFC board member, SJFC child care parent and trust officer for Cowlitz Bank Trust Services presented a seminar on charitable gifts from IRAs, with a focus on benifiting the local 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. Attendees learned a wealth of information on IRA investments, particularly about a two-year window for retirees to make charitable gifts from their IRAs.
As Flohr explained to the audience, to qualify for the limited time tax benefit, the donor must by 70 1/2 or older in 2006 or 2007, have a traditional or Roth IRA, and make the donation directly from the IRA to any 501(c)(3) charitable organization on a form for this purpose. The Family Center has information about this aspect of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 available to anyone interested.
Additionally, a video was shown on the wide array of family services offered by SJFC. SJFC donors Pat Reese and Raechel Wolford spoke to the audience on why they choose to give to the SJFC endowment fund and Carol Carver, SJFC's director, invited attendees on a tour of the facility. Carver also invited the attendees back to see the children who had been practicing to perform at the luncheon, but who were not able to attend due to the snow day.
"The kids practiced for hours and hours and I am sorry that they were not able to be here today to perform for you." The participants were able to see a sample of the artwork created by some of SJFC's children who had made the placemats by drawing an answer to the question "What do you like to do at the Family Center?"
