The Wahkiakum Mule girls basketball team used a full-game full-court press to earn a 61-58 win over the Adna Pirates Tuesday in Central League basketball.
The Mules took an early lead but fell behind in turnover trouble at the end of the first quarter, which finished with Adna up 22-14.
The Mules refocused in the second quarter and trailed only 33-30 at halftime.
Rachel Fudge hit a three-point shot near the end of the third quarter to tie the score 45-45.
The Pirates wilted under the Mule press late in the fourth quarter, and the Mules came away with a 61-58 win.
Jordyn Wirkkala led the Mule scoring with 16 points; she also had 10 rebounds. Fudge put in 13; Whitley Wirkkala and Shelby Deaton each had 11, and Courtney Helms nine. Stevie Snider scored 22 points for Adna.
Helms had eight rebounds; Fudge and W. Wirkkala had five; Deaton and Evelyn Clark three each; Sara Jespersen, Kristina Heiner and Halie Boyce two each. Boyce made three steals and five assists; Fudge had three assists.
"We played hard for four quarters; we won this one by hustle," said Coach Mark Niemeyer. "We were flying around on defense and created a lot of turnovers."
The team is at Mossyrock tonight (Thursday). They host White Pass Monday in a make-up game and Toutle Lake on Tuesday, the last home game. They close the regular season Thursday at Morton.
