The Wahkiakum Mules kept their grip on first place in the Central League with a 61-50 win January 24 at Napavine.
The Tigers led 30-21 at halftime, but the Mules turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and took command, outscoring the Tigers 19-8 in the third quarter and 23-12 in the fourth.
Toby David led the Mule scoring with 15 points; 11 points and six steals came in the second half. Romeo Savant scored 14 points, Travis Bain 12, Ty Briscoe and Brandon Ferguson eight each, and Damien Deaton and Josh Gerlach two each. Bain had five assists, and Briscoe made five steals.
The Mules host Mossyrock on Friday; they go to Toutle Lake next Wednesday and close the regular season at home with Morton on February 9.
In junior varsity action, the Tigers outscored the Mules 18-10 in the fourth quarter to win an even game 52-44.
“Only three Mule ballplayers scored, which isn’t going to give you the win,” said JV Coach Jared Moore.
Cody Olsen led the Mule scoring with 14 points; Tyler Benson had 14 and Josh Rongey 13. Benson had eight rebounds and four assists, and Rongey made eight assists.
“Tyler probably had the best game all season,” Moore said. “He had been sick with the flu a week prior to this game. He showed great heart.”
