Improving parent-child relationships is the focus of a series of discussion sessions beginning April 9 at 6:30 p.m. at St. James Family Center. The discussions will be facilitated by Jenny Gale, Family Support Services Coordinator at the Center.
The discussions will be based on Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), the most widely used parenting education program in the country. STEP encourages mutual respect between parent and child, increased cooperation, more effective communication, and a more responsible, self-reliant attitude among children.
Geared toward parents of school-aged children, six to 12 years old, STEP presents effective skills that can be used immediately. Dynamic video vignettes let parents see how easy it is to put STEP skills to work at home. The STEP parent handbook covers topics such as single parents, step-families, homework, drugs and violence. At home activities help parents apply the STEP techniques.
The parents who have participated in STEP groups say they find the program helpful for many reasons. High on the list is the opportunity it provides them to share experiences and learn from others. Many also credit STEP with improving their relationships with other people, including spouses, employers and employees.
Discussions will be held on April 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 6:30-8 p.m. Free childcare will be available. For more information and to sign up for child care, contact Jenny Gale at St. James Family Center, 795-8612.
