Wilder Construction Company of Bellingham has started work on a contract to stabilize a slide-prone slope above SR 4 at Milepost 50.9 at Stella. The company started work March 21 by switching out signal light systems that control traffic at the location and moving in equipment. This week, Washington State Department of Transportaion Area Engineer Denys S. Tack said on Tuesday, Wilder began falling trees and clearing slopes so that scalers could work on the slope, removing loose rock and securing larger chunks. The $430,000 project is expected to be completed within 40 working days. The scheduled work is not weather sensitive. Single lane closures with a portable traffic signal will remain as crews complete this work. Intermittent complete closures will take place during rock and tree removal. Motorists should expect up to 20-minute delays.
