The Wahkiakum Mule fastpitch softball team lost two recent games to powerful teams. Vernonia stopped the Mules 11-1. The Mules scored when Rachel Fudge singled and Becky Hoven doubled, knocking her home. “Vernonia boasts a pitcher with a full-ride scholarship to Illinois State,” Mule Coach Cindy Fudge commented. The Central League leading Pe Ell Trojans, 7-0, topped the Mules 5-0 and 16-4 in a double header last week. In the first game, Mule pitcher Shelby Deaton struck out nine Trojans and gave up three hits. “She had a lot of help from the defense, too,” Coach Fudge said. “Courtney Helms fielded a tough ball and whipped to Hoven at first for one out; then Hoven, with a great heads up ball, threw home to Fudge to get a double play.” She added that Paige Kehrli, center field; Fudge, the catcher, and Claire Cothren at third base all “turned in solid defensive performances.” Pe Ell scored their only earned run in the first inning; the rest came off errors. In the second game, errors came back to haunt the Mules, Coach Fudge said. “We did hit the ball, with Helms, Fudge and Deaton each singling,” she said.
