Beginning the week of June 4, vouchers will be available to eligible seniors in Wahkiakum County for use at the Two Islands Farm Market, held at 59 W. Birnie Slough Road. The vouchers are a benefit of the federal Senior Nutrition Program and are available in two dollar denominations. They allow seniors to purchase fruits and vegetables at the only authorized Farmers' Market in the county. No cash change will be given for any purchase, so a $2.25 purchase will require a 25 cent cash payment to go with a two dollar voucher. To be eligible, a person must be at least 60 years old and have an income of less than 185 percent of the federal poverty level. One senior with an income of $1,575 or less would be qualified to receive a $40 book of vouchers. Vouchers can only be used for fruits and vegetables, although many other farm products are available to anyone for cash payment. Wahkiakum residents who believe they would qualify for Senior's Farmers' Market vouchers should contact Mary Vik at the Health and Human Services Office at 795-8630. There are a limited number of voucher books available. Vouchers will be redeemable until the end of October of this year. Two Islands Farmers' Market is open Fridays from 3-6 p.m.
