Unemployment rates hit low levels

The rate of unemployment in Wahkiakum County dropped from 5.7 percent in May to 5.3 percent in June, according to figures released Tuesday by the state Employment Security Department.
The figures said 90 of 1,630 in the labor force, 5.3 percent, were out of work in June, compared to 90 of 1,650 in May. In June, 2006, 100 of 1,650 in the labor force, 6.1 percent, were out of work.
Statewide, unemployment rose from 4.3 percent in May to 4.4 percent in June. In June, 2006, the rate was 5 percent.
“Washington’s unemployment rate remains at historic lows and our healthy economy has been noticed by other states and internationally,” said Governor Chris Gregoire. “The opportunities I have found while on trade missions to other nations are bolstered by the fact that our strong market makes us an attractive trade partner.”
Cowlitz County's rate remained level at 5.7 percent in May and June. In June, 2006, the rate was 6.7 percent.
Pacific County's rate remained level at 5.8 percent in May and June. In June, 2006, the rate was 6.7 percent.
San Juan County posted the state's lowest unemployment rate, 3 percent; Ferry County had the highest at 6.7 percent.
In metropolitan areas, Longview/Kelso was the highest at 5.7 percent; Wenatchee was the lowest at 3.8 percent.
