St James Family Center is sponsoring the county’s first Conscious Fathering program on September 15. This program has been taught at eight Puget Sound sites since 1999, and seeks to help fathers develop a lifelong bond with their children. Conscious Fathering is based on the idea that children grow and learn best when there is an active and engaged father in their lives. Graduates of the Conscious Fathering classes have acquired the basic skills needed to be full partners in the care and nurturing of their children. Fathers learn all the basics of baby care including diapering, feeding, burping, sleeping, and how to deal with a crying baby. Most importantly, fathers learn how to develop a bond with baby that will last a lifetime. The Conscious Fathering Program, while geared toward new and expectant fathers, is available for all fathers, mothers, stepfathers, uncles, and grandfathers. The class will be presented at St James Family Center from 12 until 3 p.m. on September 15. Lunch and childcare will be provided. Pre-registration is requested but not required to ensure enough food and classroom materials are available. For more information call Brian McClain at 795-8612 or 560-0853.
