Cathlamet’s Broadway Street improvement project is on time and on budget, Cathlamet Mayor Dick Swart announced Friday.
After encountering some hard bedrock which slowed initial progress, the contractor, Tapani Underground, Inc. has made up for lost time, according to David Vik of the Cathlamet Public Works Department.
Local residents and businesses have encountered some inconvenience, but they seem satisfied with the courtesy and competence of the Tapani crew, Vik reported in the mayor's statement.
The first phase was to remove and replace an old water line, relocate power and communications cables underground, and add storm drain improvements. In addition to completing infrastructure work called for by the original contract, the contractor completed added work when the council authorized change orders to upsize a water main on Commercial Street, add valves and fittings to improve future maintenance, and make minor changes to improve service to customers. This work will give the town a head start on meeting goals in the town’s 2008-2013 Water Plan.
The next phase will be to form the curbs and prepare the sub-grade for paving. Pouring the sidewalks will follow once the street light conduits and bases are ready.
Swart said weather will play a critical role from here on. The ground and air temperatures must be right for the “tack coat” (primary tar seal) and the two subsequent asphalt ‘lifts’ (layers) to adhere properly.
"Good thoughts for warm weather will be most welcome. Given good weather, we should have this project completed on time,” Swart said.
“The town is most grateful for the patience and understanding that the residents, businesses, and visitors have shown during this project. Tapani’s good job performance is a big part of that. We are looking forward to celebrating the project’s completion with removing the temporary lighting and switching on our new fixtures, “ Swart added.
