Wahkiakum Health and Human Services, with support from the Timberlands Regional Support Network Ombuds, is reintroducing the Gatekeepers service. The program is a community wide system to identify high risk and vulnerable adults, including those over 60 who are experiencing mental or physical health problems, lack of support, or abuse and neglect. Gatekeepers are community members who have contact with older citizens and who are trained to identify signs of distress. Once a senior citizen is identified as needing help, Wahkiakum Health and Human Services is notified and an assessment of need carried out. The identity of the referrer is confidential. Health and Human services is planning a Gatekeepers training luncheon to recruit new members on September 18 at noon in the River Street meeting room in Cathlamet.
