Each year, the Washington State Fire Fighters’ Association, Board of Volunteer Fire Fighters’, Washington Fire Chiefs, Washington Fire Commissioners Association, and Office of the State Fire Marshal join together to recognize career and volunteer fire fighters who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving their communities.
The 22nd annual Washington State Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial Service will be held on September 30 starting at 10 a.m. at the Capitol Rotunda in Olympia .
This year, the service will honor Fire Fighter Eric Lyon with the Kennewick Fire Department, a Washington State fire fighter who died in the line of duty. The service will include bagpipes, trumpeters, and special presentations will given by Governor Christine Gregoire, Chief Jim Broman, Chief of Lacey Fire District 3 and a member of the Fire Protection Policy Board.
According to the National Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation, 106 fire fighters died in the line of duty during the last year, making fire fighting one of the nations most dangerous occupations.
