The Wahkiakum County Eagle - Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Students in the Wahkiakum School District raised $3,396 for Doernbecher Children's Hospital in a week of activities called Kids Making Miracles.

Advisor Angie Pugh announced the total Monday in assemblies at Wahkiakum High School and Thomas Middle School. This is the third year the students have participated in the Kids Making Miracles program.

Students in the high, middle and elementary schools conducted a variety of fund raising efforts ranging from selling rootbeer floats and Doernbecher bracelets to holding a movie night and high school dance.

They also held pie in the face contests for faculty members; the faculty members receiving the highest donations in jars with their names on them were selected to receive a cream pie in the face.

Robbie Garrett received the most donations at the high school, and Nicole Wilson was the top money earner at the elemenatry and middle schools. They received their prize cream pies on Monday.

At the high school, student Delaney Doumit won the drawing to give Garrett his pie.

At the middle/elementary school, Wilson knew what was coming and came dressed with goggles, shower cap and rain coat.

The fund raising activities and their results included:

--Pie in the face: $103.21 at the middle/elementary schools and $138.68 at the high school.

--Rootbeer floats, $264.

--Dolly head sales, $96. A rag doll, Dolly is the Doernbecher mascot; students bought printed copies of Dolly's head and posted them in halls.

--Bracelet sales, $225.

--Movie night, $459.

--High school dance, $202.70.

--High school royalty court, $1,229.52. The juniors were the leading money earners with $501.99.

Members of the court were seniors Ashley Silva and Blayne Edwards; juniors Marissa Washington and Cody Hauff, sophomores Maya Stanley and Zach Calvert, and freshmen Jessica Thomas and Trystan Mendez.

Community members also contributed. The Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet held a basket auction that raised $445, and Howies Corner Coffee Shop was open two hours and donated $206.45 in proceeds to the program.
