Children hear stories, receive books

Local children and volunteers gathered at Cathlamet United Church of Christ Monday to celebrate the joy of reading.

Sponsored by Reading is Fundamental (RIF) of Cowlitz County, young readers, preschool age through third grade, were welcomed in an event that helped to promote literacy. Children circled around to listen to the classic story of Curious George and then browsed the book tables in hopes of finding the perfect fit.

“RIF is an all-volunteer organization,” said board member Mary Thomas who has been involved with RIF for 21 years. “The cost of bringing books to young readers is $9.60 per child this year. All of our books come from community donations and grants.”

Children were thrilled to receive free books. After making their selections, volunteers from the community were available to read to the children. In sharing the books with the children, RIF believes, volunteers give children a familiarity with their books. This encourages them to read and re-read their books at home.

The mission of Reading is Fundamental is clear: To motivate young children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life.

“We want to see these kids do well,” explained Thomas, “beginning with books seems to be a good start.”
