Board okays signs for sandbag sites

Wahkiakum County commissioners moved quickly through the business portion of their meeting Tuesday before adjourning for a budget workshop.
Commissioners authorized Emergency Management Coordinator Beau Renfro to spend $810.76 on signs to notify residents of the location and use of sand and sandbags for flood control.
Each winter, the county road department deposits sand at fire departments throughout the county, and Renfro leaves bags that can be filled with sand to combat flood threats.
The sites are the Puget Island, Skamokawa, Grays River (Raistakka Road), District 4/Elochoman Valley fire halls.
The sand is to be used only to prevent and/or mitigate damage from flood emergencies, Renfro said.
In other business, the board formally accepted the bid of Frank Gurney, Inc., of Spokane for a county wide guardrail and safety improvement project. Gurney bid $365,166.70 for the contract. The cost will be paid by a $900,000 federal grant.
