WHS winds up Doernbecher events

March 26, 2014

Doernbecher Week ended with an assembly on Monday to celebrate all the fun and hard work that went into the fundraising event. The members of the Doernbecher Court who raised the most money were crowned King and Queen.

Senior Delaney Doumit, President of the Key Club, is proud of the work her classmates were able to do but is glad the week is behind her.

“It was stressful,” Doumit said, “but it was a lot of fun and I’m glad I did it. I’m upset it’s my last year to be involved, but thankfully, I can continue to donate.”

This year’s King and Queen of the Doernbecher Court were Seth Doumit and Kelsey Hedges. Doumit brought in $290 and Hedges was able to raise $1,207.78. The eight students who made up this year’s Doernbecher Court were able to raise almost $2,800.

Mrs. Ridout’s first grade class won the Penny War at the grade school, an event that raised $825.98. Movie night brought in another $267.

Several young men from the high school competed in a Mr. Wahkiakum Pageant on Saturday following another event, the first annual Doernbecher Bunco game. The combined event raised $668.74.

The boys kept the crowd laughing with their antics and many costume changes. Ethan Cothren, who looked fetching in his French Maid costume and feather duster was crowned Mr. Wahkiakum. He encouraged students to stay in school and called for an end to world hunger. Ryan Quigley, the runner up, demonstrated a new dance that he called “The Seth Doumit” and Jack Leavitt strutted around insisting that “she,” whoever “she” may be, “thinks my tractor’s sexy.”

Students at Wahkiakum School District raised a total of $5,791.51 for the Portland’s children’s hospital this year.
