Martin receives award

Irene Martin of Skamokawa has been awarded the David Douglas Fellowship Award from the Washington State Historical Society Board of Trustees for her work as curator of the “Legacy of the Columbia River Fishery” project, a traveling exhibit on Columbia River commercial fishing, both tribal and non-tribal, historical and present-day.

This week is Wildfire Awareness Week

The first weekend in May is not usually a busy time for fire suppression forces in southwest Washington, but this past weekend saw an unusually high number of wildfires due to dry east winds across this area.

Fire fighters practice forcible entry skills

Over the past weekend, firefighters from departments and districts from as far north as North Kitsap Fire, and as far south as Tualatin, Ore., gathered at the Main Station of Wahkiakum Fire District No. 4 to hone their forcible entry skills.

Land trust purchases island near Westport

Columbia Land Trust announced April 30 that it has completed the purchase of 109-acre Kerry Island in Westport Slough, a roughly 11-mile side channel of the Columbia River. The parcel is located about four miles from the community of Westport and eight miles from Clatskanie.

Commissioners set meetings on junk car ordinance

The Board of Wahkiakum County Commissioners have announced they will hold two town hall meetings about possible new regulations for junked vehicles and related issues. The meetings will be: May 15, 6:30 p.m., Grays River Valley Center, Rosburg, and May 21, 6:30 p.m., Wahkiakum County Courthouse, Cathlamet.

Filing opens May 13 for elected offices

Filing for elected offices that will appear on this year's primary and general election ballots will take place May 13-17 in the Wahkiakum County Auditor's office.

The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors approved a calendar for the 2013-14 school year and acted on other business when it met April 23. School will start September 3 and end June 13.
