George R. Haataia
George Robert Haataia died October 11, 2009 in Olympia, aged 71.
He was born July 5, 1938 to George and Miriam Haataia in Cathlamet and graduated from Naselle High School in 1956. He was a respected survey engineer for King County and worked throughout Washington.
He is survived by daughter Rachel and her husband Stephen; brothers Gilbert of Naselle and Marvin of Battle Ground; and sister Darlene of Kelso.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Margaret.
Services were held in Olympia.

Patricia Hallin
Puget Island resident, Patricia W. Marsh Hallin, 79, passed away October 29, 2009 at Community Home Health & Hospice in Longview.
She was born April 12, 1930 in Kirkland to Robert and Minnie (Cox) Ogilvie. Pat graduated from Kirkland High School in 1948 and attended the University of Washington. She married Edward L. Marsh in December 1949 and together they moved to Puget Island in 1950; he preceded her in death in 1972. In June 1974 she married David B. Hallin. They lived at Silver Lake for over 20 years before moving to their home on Puget Island; he preceded her in death in 2002.
Pat’s greatest love was entertaining family and friends. She was a great story teller and delighted all with lively tales of the antics of both family members and her varied menagerie of pets. She was also a talented water color artist and leaves behind a beautiful collection of art work that will be treasured for generations. Though Pat made close friends wherever she lived, her favorite years were perhaps those spent on Puget Island where she spent the majority of her child rearing years and where she returned in retirement to enjoy dear old friends and the grandeur of the Columbia River.
She is survived by her son George Marsh of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughters, Wendy Marsh of Vancouver, and Megan Whitmire of Kennewick; a brother, Mike Ogilvie of Bellevue; grandchildren Kylyn Johnson, Stacy Anderson, Tiffany Wallace, Amy Blain, Christina Marsh, Justin Marsh, Will Marsh and John Ellavsky; 11 great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, George Ogilvie and Robert “Bud” Ogilvie and her sisters Katherine Hall and Ellen Davenport.
A funeral was held November 1, 2009 with a private burial at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet. Memorial contributions may be made in Patricia W. Hallin’s name to Community Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, or Cowlitz County Humane Society, P.O. Box 172, both in Longview, WA 98632.

Mary A. Lynch
Cathlamet resident, Mary Alice Lynch, 83, passed away October 31, 2009 at her home. She was born October 23, 1926 in San Francisco, Calif. to Harry and Ellen (Futtrup) Lynch. She graduated from Providence Academy in Vancouver in 1944 and in 1948 she graduated from Marylhurst in Lake Oswego, Ore. She moved to Cathlamet from Long Beach, Calif. in 1989.
Mary was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and an oblate at St. Benedict in Mt. Angel, Ore. She was also a member of her church's Altar Society and Wahkiakum County Historical Society. Mary was a teacher at public schools in Long Beach, Calif. and retired in 1988 after 40 years of teaching. She was a talented artist, enjoying her informal art group and working with acrylics.
She is survived by her brother, Jim Lynch and his wife, Audry of Cathlamet; and brother-in-law, Dean James and sister-in-law, Irma Lynch. She was a well loved aunt to many nieces and nephews and leaves behind many friends. She was preceded in death by brothers, John and Willard Lynch and her sister, Agnes James.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Cathlamet. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Friday. Viewing will take place prior to the service. She will be placed next to her parents at Ilwaco Cemetery in the family plot. Memorial contributions may be made in Mary Lynch’s name to Cathlamet First Aid Division, P.O. Kim E. Post
Kim Eugene Post, 60, passed away November 1, 2009 at his home in Cathlamet.
He was born October 7, 1949 in Gun, Colo. to Floyd and Dee (Green) Post. He lived in Alaska for many years, Idaho for a few years and he came to Cathlamet in 2004. He married his wife, Susan on November 24, 2006 in Long Beach; she survives him at home.
Kim served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam Era. He was a long time employee of Peninsula Airways in Alaska.
He enjoyed car shows, showing his 1941 Dodge Power Wagon, for which he won many trophies.
Kim is survived by his wife; sons, Cory Gaylor and Sean Gaylor; a stepson, Gary L. Biggs; daughters, Hailey Post, Jessica Nefedov and Rachelle Post; a stepdaughter, Becky Ray; his sister, Kerry and her husband, Lonny Willis; seven grandchildren and one nephew.
There will be no service at his request.

Thelma Thompson
Thelma Lee Peckham Thompson, a resident of both Columbia View and Ocean View Nursing Homes, died in Vancouver on October 27, 2009 only two months after her husband of 56 years. Oral Thompson passed away on August 7, 2009.
Thelma was born in Miami, Okla. on December 3, 1932 to C. Earl and Vida Bridges Peckham. They moved to Longview in 1944 where Thelma graduated from R.A. Long.
Oral was born to Chester and Jennie A.(Dickinson) Thompson in Walker, Minn., on September 19, 1927. The family moved to Kelso, where Oral graduated from R.A. Long and then served in the army.
Thelma and Oral both enjoyed cooking and owned The Spaghetti Grand Restaurant and a fair booth.
Oral’s hobby was writing. He completed a book, “Eighty Acres North” about his grandparents and parents’ life during the depression, as well as several books for children. Thelma’s hobby in addition to music, was artistic needlework, for which she earned many blue ribbons.
The couple is survived by their children Charles (Nancy)Thompson and, Katherine (Bjarne)Thompson Rostad, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

John J. Luthi
John J. Luthi, 68, of Skamokawa died October 30, 2009.
He was born January 2, 1941 in Arlington to John J. and Isabelle G. (Fry) Luthi where he attended Arlington High School, graduating in 1959.
He married Linda Lawver in 1964; the couple had four children and divorced in 1983. On January 1, 1984, he married Arlene Harder.
He was a mechanic who enjoyed attending car shows, and was a member of the Solid Rock Cruisers and the On The Road Again car clubs.
He is survived by his wife Arlene of Skamokawa; sister Eunice Glandon of Entiat; sons Randy Luthi of Dalton Gardens, Idaho, Criss Luthi of Skamokawa and Gale Luthi of Kingston, Mass.; daughter Holly Stahlberg of Kalispell, Mont.; three stepdaughters Tracy Williams of St. Helens, Ore., Rebecca Castillo of Cathlamet, and Kelly Thomas of Soap Lake; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 4 p.m. at the Skamokawa Grange with Pastor Ryan Frank of the Heritage Bible Church officiating.

Esther Nelson-Graves
Esther Nelson-Graves, 81, of Yuma, Ariz. died October 16, 2009.
She was born on October 9, 1928 to Gunmar and Nika Anderson in New Westminster, British Columbia. She moved to Puget Island in 1933 and graduated from Wahkiakum High School. She worked as a cook for the Wahkiakum School District and owned and operated the Sandwich Depot Deli in Portland. She loved to cook and entertain and was proud of her Norwegian heritage.
She married twice, to Raymond Nelson in 1947 and to Thomas Graves in 1993. He precedes her in death.
She is survived by son David Nelson and his wife Cheryl of Puget Island; grandson Joel Nelson of Promontory Point, Utah; Granddaughter Kaisha Nelson of Bellingham; stepdaughter Dawn Gonzales of Yuma; and her loving companion James Rydberg also of Yuma.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. on October 31, 2009 with Irene Martin officiating.

Florence E. Marcus
Florence Edith Marcus of Eugene, 78, died October 11 of complications from pneumonia.
She was born January 27, 1931, in Yankton, S.D., to Peter and Marie Brockmuller Smith and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in Cathlamet.
She married Clark Lloyd Marcus in 1970. He preceded her in death.
She was a dental assistant for more than 30 years, and was owner of Marcus Electronics.
Survivors include sons, Don Ahrens of Eugene and Gary Ahrens of Kelso; daughter, Susan Holum of Clatskanie; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held October 16, at Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene, Ore.

Michelle L. Mast
Michelle Lynn Mast of Tapps Island, died in an automobile accident on October 8, 2009 at the age of 40.
She is survived by her husband Christopher Mast, son Kevin and daughter Megan.
Also surviving are her parents Don and Marcella Lisko of Tapps Island; brother Craig Lisko of Snohomish; sister Shannon Pollock of Snohomish; parents-in-law James and Carol Mast and Sharon Mast of Cathlamet; and numerous cousins and friends.
Services were held at October 14, 2009. Klontz Funeral Home of Auburn was in charge of arrangements.

Carole A. Knopski
Cathlamet resident, Carole A. Knopski, passed away October 5, 2009 at St. John Medical Center in Longview.
She was born May 21, 1938 in Aberdeen, to William and Amelia (Schuler) Rawding. She graduated from Acosta High School in 1957. She was a longtime Naselle resident; she also resided in Chinook and Arizona before moving to Cathlamet in 2004.
She married Jack Knopski on August 4, 1968 in Tacoma; he survives her at home.
Carole was active in her community during her insurance career in Long Beach. She was a devoted family person; she enjoyed camping, fishing, reading and trips to Nevada.
In addition to her husband, Jack; she is survived by her son, John Knopski and his wife, Virginia of Long Beach; her grandchildren, Ethan and Abigail Knopski; her mother, Amy Smith of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; her sisters, Allene Seyler of Salem, Ore. and Anita Pac of Milton; her favorite cousin, Marilyn Miller of Olympia; several nieces, nephews and good friends. She also was blessed with her dear friends, Mark, Amee, Morgan and Macie Elliott of Cathlamet.

Vickie E. Barton
Puget Island resident Vickie Elaine Barton, 62, passed away October 1, 2009 at her home.
She was born December 8, 1946 in Westwood, Calif. to Vernon and Vivian (Breedlove) Simmons. She graduated from Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, Calif. in 1965. On November 13, 1965 she married Jim Barton in Sacramento, Calif. and they later moved to Cathlamet in 1979 to raise their family; he survives her at home.
Vickie started her career as a hair dresser in 1966 retiring recently due to her illness. She had her own salon in California and was currently a partner with JoAnn Prestegard at the Cutting Edge Salon in Cathlamet. She enjoyed her family, reading, plants and her home.
In addition to her husband Jim, she is survived by her children Vernon Barton (JoAnne), and Jamie Quigley, all of Cathlamet and Jimmy Barton (Jennifer) of Galt, Calif.; a sister, Virginia Simmons of Longview, and her father, Vernon Simmons of Rocklin, Calif. She was also blessed with her grandchildren Hailey and Ryan Quigley and Tyler Barton and a large extended family.

Jean I. Jacobson
Long Beach resident Jean I. Jacobson, 61, died September 6, 2009 in Vancouver, Washington of natural causes. Born August 25, 1948 in Gladstone, Michigan, she was the daughter of Reuben and Ruth (Swanson) Berg. As a child she moved with her parents to Vancouver, Washington. There Jean graduated from Fort Vancouver High School and went on to obtain her bachelors degree in secondary education from Portland State University.
Jean taught high school English for several years. On May 13, 1972 she married Dale Jacobson and in 1973 they moved to Long Beach. Jean became a wife, mother and homemaker. She also was co-owner of the family business Active Enterprises where she worked six days a week—loving every minute of it.
Jean was past board president of Willapa Counseling in Long Beach. She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, crossword puzzles, reading, cooking, her dog Reece and working with her husband at their business. She also enjoyed helping customers at Active Enterprises and visiting with everyone who came into the office. Jean enjoyed living at the beach and especially enjoyed sitting outside listening to the rain. Jean was proud of her kids and grandkids and she loved having them visit on the weekends.
Besides her husband, Jean is survived by her mother Ruth Berg of Olympia, WA; daughters Rachel Sautter of Vancouver, WA and Katie Herz of Washougal, WA; sons Curtis Jacobson of Phoenix, AZ and Clark Jacobson of Long Beach, WA; brothers John Berg of Salem, OR and Richard Hiltunen of Kelsey, MN; sisters Mary Bailey of Seattle, WA, Phyllis Wilson of Longview, WA and Jeanetta Clark of Marquette, MI; grandchildren Lauren, Jacob and Colton Sautter and Peyton Jacobson; and other members of her extended family. She was preceded in death by her father.
Celebration of Jean’s life was held Saturday, September 26, 2009, 11:00 AM at Penttila’s Chapel by The Sea, Long Beach. A reception followed at the family home. Catherine A. Candelaria
Cathlamet resident, Catherine Ann “Cathy” Candelaria, 52, passed away at her home on October 3, 2009. She was born on September 3, 1957 in Los Angeles, CA to Larry and Shirley Ann (Potter) Candelaria. She came to the local area in 1996.
Cathy worked at the Ranch House as a waitress and was well loved there. She is survived by her son, Jeremy Candelaria of Santa Rosa, CA; a daughter, Tatiana Candelaria of Vancouver, WA; her parents, Larry Candelaria of Santa Rosa, CA and Shirley Candelaria of Rohnert Park, CA; brothers, Larry Candelaria of Rohnert Park, CA and Robert Candelaria of San Rafael, CA; sisters, Carolyn Candelaria of Rohnert Park, CA and Theresa Rehfeld of Big Bear Lake, CA; a grandson, Taquille Candelaria-Johnson and her longtime companion, Kent Dunn of Cathlamet.

Billy Joe "B.J." Helms
Billy Joe “B.J.” Helms, 65, of Skamokawa, passed away September 25, 2009 as a result of a motorcycle accident in Vader.
He was born June 6, 1944 in Houston, Texas to Dock and Mary (Moore) Helms. He graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1962. He married Valerie Pedersen on April 10, 1964; she preceded him in death on October 17, 2005.
B.J. was with the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Department for 24 years, in the early years as a reserve, also as a search and rescue officer, a drug task force officer, and a corrections officer, retiring in 2007. He was dedicated to his community, which he had a deep love for.
He loved riding his “Shadow” with his motorcycle friends, spending time with his family, fishing and hunting.
On July 1, 2009 he married Eva Zerbst in Skamokawa; she survives him at home. He is also survived by his children, Cynthia Montgomery (Marvin Walton), Matt Helms (Marsha), Mark Helms (Janine) and Christina Isaak (Jeff), and LaVonne Thompson; his mother, Mary Helms; his brothers, James Helms (Rita) and Wayne Helms (Annette); eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service with a potluck to follow will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, October 4, 2009 at J.A. Wendt Elementary School in Cathlamet.

Reidun L. Green
Longtime resident Reidun Lillian Green, 81, passed away September 25, 2009 at Columbia View Care Center in Cathlamet. She was born in Oslo, Norway on January 5, 1928 to Bernhard and Gunvor (Hulleberg) Gundersen. She came to the U.S. in 1952 after marrying her first husband, Arnold Good in Germany; they later divorced. She married Hank Green on February 29, 1976 and they lived in Cathlamet for many years; he preceded her in death in 1996.
Reidun worked at Columbia View Care Center for several years both in the laundry dept. and as a well loved aide. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage; she had a love of music and song, gardening and her family. She was a member of Sons of Norway.
She is survived by her daughters, Gwen Ronninghaug (Arve) of Kristiansund, Norway, Lynn Fancher (Larry) of Portland, and Kari Claussen (Don) of Puget Island; a brother Arne Gundersen of Oslo, Norway; nine grandchildren, two great-grandsons, a great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews in Norway.
In addition to her husband Hank, she was preceded by her son Eric in 2007.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at the Columbia View Care Center. Memorial contributions may be made in Reidun Green's name to Community Hospice, P.O. box 2067, Longview, WA 98632. Cremation has taken place and she will be buried with her family in Norway.

Doris W. Pearson
Doris Wilma Pearson, 97, passed away September 13, 2009 in Longview, WA. She was born on November 1, 1911 in Clatskanie, OR to Walter and Pearl (Pulliam) Bailey. She grew up in Altoona, WA as a fisherman’s daughter. She married Bertrell “Swede” Pearson on December 5, 1930 in Astoria and they moved to a logging camp in upper Naselle Valley. In 1936 they moved to their farm in Deep River and later moved to Miller Point Rd. where she lived for 50 years. She spent the last 3 ½ years at Pacific County Home in Longview, where she received wonderful care.
She loved her family, enjoyed being a grandma, flowers, playing the organ, pinochle and she was an avid Trail Blazer fan. She loved having company, entertaining, baking and time with friends.
She is survived by her sons, Don Pearson (Sheryl) of Rosburg, WA and Gary Pearson (Wenda) of Longview; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Swede in 1983, her brothers, Clyde, Robert, Herbert and Alfred Bailey and her sister, Mildred Bakkila.

C.G. "Jerry" Pedersen
Lifelong Wahkiakum resident, C.G. “Jerry” Pedersen, 66, passed away September 13, 2009 at OHSU in Portland, Ore. He was born February 2, 1943 in Cathlamet, to Sverre and Lily (Johnson) Pedersen. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1961 and attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma.
Jerry was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a talented musician on the string bass, and was a member of the SW Washington Symphony, North Coast Big Band and several small instrumental groups. He was also a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Jerry retired from the Wahkiakum School District after 30 years as supervisor of the bus garage and bus drivers.
He is survived by his sisters, Margaret Glaser of Puget Island, and Phyllis Templin of Tacoma; his nieces and nephews, Brendan Glaser (Ellen Peres), Nicola Seiler (Bruce), Bryce Glaser (Malisa), David Templin (Julie), Tim Templin, and Susan Anderson (Walter).

Boyd McDougal Ferguson
Boyd McDougal "Fergy" Ferguson passed away at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on August 26, 2009. Despite a quick and excellent emergency response by family and Bainbridge Island Fire and Police Departments, Boyd died after suffering cardiac arrest. He was 87 years old and pleased with his full and active life. He loved his country, his family and Glenn Miller music.
"Fergy" was the third son of Robert and Helen Ferguson. He was born in Lexington, Mo. on July 8, 1922. Brothers Robert and Richard preceded him in death.
Because of the proximity of his birthday to Independence Day, he usually celebrated with an arsenal of fireworks (mostly legal). He often spoke of having grown up in the depression with everyone pitching in doing chores and living frugally to keep the family going during hard times.
He graduated from High School in Grand Island, Nebraska in June of 1942. Fergy served in the military from 1943-1948, and was honorably discharged as a corporal in the US Army Air Corp. Always a patriot; he flew his American flag daily.
A bit of an artist and a partier, Fergy graduated from the University of Colorado on the GI Bill, with a degree in Fine Arts. He met his wife La Verne I. "Bernie" Long at a Halloween party and they married after her graduation in 1948. (Fergy took a little longer to get through school than Bernie did).
Some of the best times for Bernie and Fergy were while working in Rangely, Colo.; he as a roughneck on an oil rig, and she as a property manager. Their son Larry was born in Rangely. Daughter Dede came along seven years later while Fergy was working his way up the corporate ladder as a personnel administrator for Dow Chemical and later as a personnel manager for Swinerton and Walberg Construction Company. The family enjoyed many years in a house that Fergy and Bernie designed in Boulder, Colorado - Home! They participated in church, scouting and civic activities.
Retirement on the Columbia River at Cathlamet was secure and pleasant. Fergy loved the river, for it reminded him of his early days on the Missouri River like Mark Twain. Fergy liked poetry, parades, Pall Malls, photography and pretty girls.
He is survived by his beloved wife La Verne "Bernie" Ferguson of Bainbridge Island; younger sister Helen Harper of Prairie Village, Kan.; children Dede Shorett and her husband Peter of Bainbridge Island and son Larry Ferguson of Sebastopol, Calif. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Jennifer Ferguson, and Carl and Brooke Shorett. They will all miss him dearly.
In lieu of a funeral or memorial service Fergy asked that all who knew him extend a "remembrance blessing" in their own way. A private family gathering will be held later in Boulder, Colo. where his remains will be interred. He lived a long life with few regrets. Fergy will be missed by all who knew him. Ralph J. Bautista
Ralph John Bautista, 78, of Skamokawa, passed away at home. He was born December 18, 1930 in New York City, NY to Olympia Fren and Ralph Nella Bautista. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Delia Aguilera in 1951; they had two daughters, Christine Haskell and Kathleen Bautista, and later divorced. In 1967 he married Ruth Bie and adopted her sons, Christopher and Mark Bautista.
He worked many jobs in metropolitan New York City, Northport, NY, Boise, ID and Portland, OR retiring from the Veteran’s Administration where he worked as a nursing assistant for 26 years. He later worked as a tractor-trailer driver in Vancouver, WA. He earned an associate degree from Clark College in 1985.
Ralph loved boy scouting as a scoutmaster and was especially proud to have earned Wood Badge. He enjoyed fishing and clamming both coasts and always kept a garden with enough garlic to share with his extended family. He was proud of his children’s accomplishments.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth at home; his daughters in Florida and his sons in Portland and Sitka; a brother, John in Virginia; a grandson, two granddaughters, one great-great-grandson and numerous cousins.

Dale L. Hansen
Dale L. Hansen, 83, died August 14, 2009.
He was born to Lewis Hansen and Alice Olson on January 24, 1926 and graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1943 before attending the University of Nebraska. He left the university to serve as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the University of Washington and obtained a degree in education from Pacific Lutheran University.
He married his wife Harriet in 1950 and they lived in Longview. He served as principal of Wahkiakum High School from 1954-1956, and taught at R.A. Long High School in Longview.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Harriet who died on March 31, 2009. He is survived by Peter and Joani Teutsch; Heidi, Erik and Kurt and Beverly Hills family; Karren, Kari and Liv Eisaman; Weston and Marietta Alexander of Everett and extended family in Nebraska.
A memorial service was held August 24 at the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bellevue.

Sarah A. Peck
Cathlamet resident, Sarah Arlene Peck, 78, passed away August 14, 2009 at her home. She was born May 31, 1931 in Orbisonia, Pennsylvania to Charles and Goldie (Lowery) Booher. She lived in Missouri, California and Oregon prior to coming to Cathlamet. On September 26, 1969 she married Harold Peck in Hagerstown, MD; he survives her at home.
Sarah was an active member of the Assembly of God Church. She was a loving wife, mom and grandma. She loved her church, her family and working with children. She and Harold also enjoyed camping and traveling together.
In addition to her husband Harold, she is survived by her sons, George Snyder of Shadegap, Pa, Mark Peck of Gastonia, N.C. and Harold Peck of Big Cove Tannery, Pa; daughters, Linda Mae Stolp of La Pine, Ore., Patricia Taffner of Joplin, Mo., Susan Presley of Boisdarc, Mo. and Laurie Bentley of Rockwall, Texas; a sister, Doris Snyder of Tonawanda, N.Y.; a Godson, Mickey Tapocik of Riverside, Calif.; 22 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Darryl Peck, a daughter, Doris Jean Rosenborg and several siblings.

Arnet A. Danielsen
Lifelong local resident Arnet A. Danielsen, 90, passed away on August 10, 2009 at Columbia View Care Center. He was born July 20, 1919 on Puget Island to Hartvig and Ellen (Anderson) Danielsen. He attended school on Puget Island. He married Inez Ohrberg on January 22, 1938; she survives him at home in Cathlamet.
Arnet was in the Navy during WWII from 1944-1946. At age 15 he began commercial fishing in Alaska with his dad when they still used sailboats. He eventually bought his own boat. Arnet also fished the Columbia River and Puget Sound. He worked as a carpenter foreman for Crown Zellerbach from 1960-1981 when he retired. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and sport fishing. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge.
In addition to his wife Inez, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Raymond and Judy Danielsen; daughter and son-in-law Virginia and Fred Ostling; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Harry Danielsen and sister Helen Rust.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Our Saviours Lutheran Church. A private Masonic inurnment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Arnet Danielsen's name to the Cathlamet First Aid Division, P.O. Box 142, Cathlamet, WA 98612.

William L. Cagle
William L. Cagle, 71, died July 7, 2009 in Anchorage, Alaska after a long bout of cancer.
William was born January 23, 1938 to Elbert and Della L. Cagle in Astoria, Ore. He attended Wahkiakum High School in Cathlamet. After a brief stint in the army he lived in the Wahkiakum area and moved to Alaska and worked jobs in the railroad, post office, etc.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers.
Bill is survived by his companion of 24 years, Rose Sheldon; sons Brad Prestegard of Longview, Jerry Cagle and wife Charlene of Wasilla, Alaska; Lance Cagle and wife Peggy; nephew Lonnie Ray Cox of Ridgefield; sister Darlene L. Rafferty and husband Darrell of Battle Ground; step-nieces and nephews Stuart Rafferty of Battle Ground, Stacy Garcia (Rafferty) of Battle Ground, Evan Rafferty of Mercer Island, Sydney Herb (Rafferty); and eight grandchildren.
Bill's funeral has already taken place and he is buried at Fort Richardson in Alaska.

Kristine M. Jones
Kristine Marie “Kris” Jones was born April 6, 1951 in Ilwaco, Washington, the daughter of the late Gordon Anderson and Paulyne (Manson) Anderson. She was raised in Deep River, Washington and graduated from Naselle High School in Naselle, Washington.
She was united in marriage to Steven R. Jones on September 12, 1975 in Benton City, Washington, and they were together 25 years. While married they resided in Stanfield, Oregon.
Kris lived in the Stanfield community for over twenty years, until 1999 when she moved to the Newberg community, where she had resided since.
She had worked as a bookkeeper, a planner and later as a buyer for Mettler Toledo Scale Company in Tualatin, Oregon. More recently she had been working as a cashier at the Bi-Mart in Newberg, until she had to retire because of ill health.
Kris enjoyed the beach, and spending time with her grandchildren, friends and family.
Kris was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Paul Anderson.
Survivors include her two daughters and a son-in-law, Stephanie R. and Munty Teahn, of Sheridan, Oregon; and Jennifer L. Jones, of Priest River, ID; her five siblings and their spouses, Lois and Joe Bighill, of Cornelius, Oregon; Dan and Bonnie Anderson, of Grays River, Washington, Gary and Roberta Lang Anderson, of Seattle, Washington; Jon and Joanne Anderson, of Woodland, Washington; and Ron Anderson, of Kelso, Washington; and her sister-in-law, Judy Anderson, of Port Orchard, Washington.
Also surviving are three grandchildren, Beatrice Myeisha Grace Teahn, Jason Jeffrey Teahn and Samantha Kristine Favor Teahn and numerous nieces and nephews.

Odene Feiring
Odene (McGrath) Feiring died July 30, 2009, at the West Care Center of the Odd Fellows Home. She was 97. She was born in Ephrata on October 14, 1911 to Isic Newton McGrath and Lydia Gilbertson McGrath. Her parents owned a general store in Ephrata and she enjoyed telling her grandchildren stories about her childhood memories playing in the store, dressing her dolls with baby clothes and fabric from the store and helping her father with customers. Her family later moved to Seattle so that her older brother and sister could attend the University of Washington. Her father had a manufacturing business in Seattle which is where she met her future husband Art.
She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle. She wanted to attend college but was unable to due to the Great Depression. She married Arthur Feiring in 1934. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage. When asked about their secret to a long and loving marriage, they both agreed one should "marry your best friend." Soon after they married, they adopted her two nieces, Pat and Phyllis. After the girls graduated from high school, Art and Odene moved to Cathlamet, and they opened a hardware and building supply store where they worked together. They were active in the local Grange and in the Cathlamet Congregational Church. After retiring, they moved to Arizona to enjoy the sunshine (or get away from the rain, as Art would say). In retirement, they enjoyed camping and fishing and became good friends with fellow campers. They were active members of the Dessert Heritage Congregational Church in Mesa, Arizona.
Odene was warm and loving. She loved to play cribbage and she always had a warm smile, a wry sense of humor and a twinkle in her eye.
In 1999, Art passed away. She then moved to Walla Walla to be near her family. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Walla Walla and lived at the Odd Fellows Home.
She is survived by a daughter Patricia Bristow of Kent, a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Pulfer of Walla Walla, nine grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Cathlamet Congregational Church August 9 at 4 p.m.

Dorothy K. Smith
Dorothy K. “Dot” Smith, 71, died July 15, 2009 at Libby Care Center in Montana.
She was born in Modesto, Calif. to Paul and Hermina Carroll and grew up in Skamokawa.
In 1956, she married William “Hank” Smith and moved to Texas. The couple had seven children together. She later remarried Ernest R. Skaggs in 1968. She moved to Clatskanie and had two more children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son Herman L. Smith; and granddaughter Treva Skaggs.
She is survived by sister Evelyn Carroll of Washington; brothers Paul C. Carroll and Daniel Carroll, both of Washington; sons Donald E. Smith of Joshua, Tex., Steven W. Smith of Idaho, Robert E. Smith of Knappa, Ore., Greg H. Smith of Knappa, Ore., and Craig E. Smith of Oklahoma; daughters Smoky-Li “Betty” Bond of Joshua, Tex., Veronica Coy of Dillsboro, Ind., and Virginia Rice of Libby, Mont.; and numerous grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date in Skamokawa.

Ernest E. Kandoll
Ernest Emil Kandoll was born January 27, 1915 in Astoria, to Seal River/Grays River residents Emil and Johanna (Amundsen) Kandoll. He died June 29, 2009 at his home in Pe Ell, at the age of 94.
He married Margery Bliss December 21, 1938 in Boise, Idaho and together they had six children living first in Rosburg then in Longview and Battle Ground. After Margery’s death in 1988 he married Bernice Dodge Jenkins September 10, 1989 in Centralia.
He was a logger and commercial fisherman on both the Columbia River and in Bristol Bay, Alaska before retiring.
He is survived by his wife Bernice, sons Wes (Maretta) and Greg (Kari) Kandoll; daughters, Corrine Vanderwerff, Marja (Tom) Brizendine, Cheryl (Eugene) Knight; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a brother Richard Kandoll and a sister Mabel (Kandoll) Herold, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son Douglas Kandoll and a brother Walter Kandoll.
A celebration of his life will be held July 25, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Centralia Seventh-day Adventist Church at 1601 Military Road, Centralia. Private internment at Longview Memorial Park.

Nathan Calloway Davis
Nathan Calloway Davis, 77, passed away peacefully at home in Kalama, WA surrounded by his family on June 30, 2009. He was born on June 24, 1932 in Kelso, WA to Harold (Tex) and Maxine (Nelson) Davis. His father died when he was three years old and he was preceded in death by his mother Maxine and his step-father, Ray Robinson.
Nate was a lifelong resident of Wahkiakum and Cowlitz Counties and spent his retirement enjoying life in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. He attended Wahkiakum schools, graduating from R. A. Long High School and played football while attending Lower Columbia College.
Nathan is survived by his first wife, D. Merrilee Davis (Clancy) of Kelso, married in 1958 in Stevenson, WA and their three children, son, David Nathan Davis (wife, Kaylie) of Longview; daughters, Dana Rae Minium of Kelso and Dona Lee Davis of Longview. He is also survived by his wife, Patricia Elaine Davis (Burke) of Kalama, married in 1979 in Longview, WA and their daughter Nanette Marie Searing of Vancouver, WA; brother Roger Davis of Cathlamet, WA; grandchildren, Tyler Minium, Joey Aasen, Ashley Aasen, Matt Minium, Nathan Davis II, Danaka Ross, Robert Weil, Rochelle Weil, Chris Meade, Amy Meade, Sean McClain and Chelsea McClain; three great grandchildren, Aaliyah, Trevor and Madison; special loving friend, Claudia Diaz Castro and longtime friend, George Zelko; several nieces and nephews.
Nathan joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served on the USS Henry N. Tucker. He was also a commercial fisherman in Kodiak Alaska, often returning home with a seafood feast for the entire neighborhood. He was also a diver. Nate worked as a pilebuck for the majority of his life. He worked for Hanly Salvage, Hart Construction, General Construction and in 1981 proudly started his own company, Calloway Ross, Inc. Nate spent a lifetime building the foundations of our local area in many ways. He knew our land and the Columbia River better than most.
He was a member of the Longview Elks, Pile Drivers Local 1036 (served as President), American Legion Post 7, Chapala, Mexico and Peninsula Dream Machines of Port Angeles, WA.
Nate was a master craftsman, a painter, a creator; he was a thinker, a philosopher, and he loved people! He was larger than life, deeply gracious, an honest man, charismatic and his generosity touched many. We will all miss his warmth and smile!
A Celebration of Nate’s Life will be held on Thursday, July 9, 6 p.m. at the Monticello Hotel. All friends welcome! Please bring your memories and stories to share.

Fae L. Mertsching
Fae Leah Mertsching, 98, of Longview passed away June 25, 2009 at hospice.
She was born May 26, 1911 in Ponca, Nebraska to Dave and Dora (Selby) Keyser. Fae lived in the Cathlamet- Oak Point area from 1924 to 1975 when she moved to Lakeside CA . In 2005 she returned to Longview.
She married her first husband Frank Mertsching in1931 he preceded her February 2, 1969. On July 25,1970 Fae married her second husband Dick Mertsching, he preceded her May 21, 1990.
Prior to moving to Longview, Fae was a longtime member of The 1st Southern Baptist Church in El Cajon, Calif. Fae worked as a nurse’s aid at several local nursing homes. She enjoyed her home, family and picnics at their family park on Mill Creek Road. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and vegetables, and doing crafts. She was a member of Oak Point Church for many years where she played the piano.
She is survived by daughter Frances Fisher of Castle Rock, step-daughter Helen Hanson of Longview, brother Ralph Keyser of Cathlamet, sisters Thelma Norvell of Lakeside, Calif., Marian Sowell of Santee, Calif., and her dear friends Tom and Hazel Cox of El Cajon. Eleven grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Fae was preceded by a great-granddaughter Tricia Straughn in 2000, step-son Harry Mertsching, brother Harry Keyser and sister Helen Howard.

Delmer Enge
Delmer was born on Valentines Day, February 14, 1932 to Leif and Mattie Enge on Puget Island. He passed to a higher calling on June 16, 2009 at Mountain View Hospital in North Las Vegas, where he had lived for the last 12 years after moving from Glendale, California where he lived after being discharged from the Navy in 1955.
Delmer is survived by his wife of 32 years Rita Enge and his daughter Karen Howard (Mathew Howard) and twin grandchildren Andrew and Katie Howard of Granada Hills, California. Also included in his very close family are Frank and Diane Billotti and Rita's grandaughter Talia Billotti, also of North Las Vegas. Delmer's first daughter Kathy Enge has been in heaven for several years waiting for her father to arrive. Surviving also includes his brother Elwood Enge (Patricia Enge) nephew Steven Enge, nieces Jean Enge and Elaine DeJohn (Charles) and Sarah DeJohn, grandaughter of Elwood and Patricia, all of Mountlake Terrace.
In 1932, Puget Island was primarily a Scandinavian community. Leif Enge was also born on Puget Island of immigrant Norwegian parents. Leif spent 30+ years building fishing boats for fishermen on the Columbia River and in Alaska. It was in that boat building shop that Delmer got his first job at an early age and from there he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 to serve four years as an engine man aboard the destroyer DD676 (USS Marshal) off the shores of Korea. His boat building experience was what got him his first job after Naval discharge as a draftsman for Litton Industries in the Los Angeles area and from that beginning he became one of the top designers of packaging and instrument development in the Los Angeles area. The cockpit instrumentation on Boeing airplanes provided him with many hours of thought and production for lots of years until his retirement in 1998. Delmer did not miss the long weekly commute between Los Angeles and North Las Vegas but he will surely be missed by his family and many friends in both places. He was one good guy.
Interment will be Saturday June 27, 2009 at 2 p.m., Bunker Mortuary and Eden Vale cemetery in Las Vegas.

Joseph B. Tarabochia
Lifelong Skamokawa resident, Joseph Burton Tarabochia, 85, passed away June 16, 2009 at St. John Medical Center. He was born February 17, 1924 in Astoria, Ore. to Dominic and Anna (Marine) Tarabochia. He attended school in Brookfield. On October 2, 1948 he married Olive Goodell; she preceded him in death.
Joe was a very proud veteran. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII, stationed in Ipswich, England where he was a bombardier on B-17s. He was a certified expert marksman.
He devoutly attended Catholic masses and prayed the Rosary. He was a member of St. Catherine’s and St. Rose Catholic Churches. He was also a member of C.R.F.P.U, VFW #3017 and Disabled American Veterans.
Joe was a commercial fisherman. He fished the Columbia River, Bristol Bay, Alaska, Puget Sound, Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor. He was well known for having an exceptional gift in making and mending gillnets and was one of the best fishermen on the Lower Columbia River, setting high standards for his family and others. Joe also worked for Crown Zellerbach in Cathlamet and the Shakertown Shakemill. He was a licensed log patroller and piloted surveyors to survey Lower Columbia Timberlands. He was well known in his later years for starting Smokin’ Joe’s Seafood where he would sell or give away his seafood
Joe was exceptionally kind, caring, giving and cherished his family and the time he spent with them. He was a generous loving person to anyone he knew and was appreciative of all his blessings. He had a heart of gold. He was also known for his inner, physical and spiritual strength. Joe was a self taught harmonica player, he enjoyed dancing, fishing and hunting.
Joe is survived by his daughters, Joanne Longtain (Larry), Francy Sweet (Rocky), Karen Hanigan (Hank) and Mary Gregg (Jeff); his sons, Joe Tarabochia, Jr., Tim Tarabochia, Terry Tarabochia (Kim), Tom Tarabochia (Bonnie) and Dan Tarabochia (Kathy); a brother, Dominic Tarabochia; 29 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Besides his wife Olive, he was preceded in death by sons, Ron and David Tarabochia; a brother, Tony Tarabochia and a sister, Katherine Korff.

Herbert Andrew Kehrli died May 23, 2009 aged 74. His complete obituary was previously published in The Eagle May 23.

William Fritz
William "Bill" Fritz died at the Ottawa Hospital, Canada, on June 9, 2009. He was 80 years old.
He was born August 24, 1928 in Cathlamet to Dr. H.D. and Peggy Fritz in his father's Main Street office, where Dr. Fritz practiced for over 50 years.
Bill graduated Wahkiakum High School in 1946. He served with the U.S Air Force in the Philippines during the Korean conflict before returning to Seattle to finish his PhD in Geology at the University of Washington. In 1964 he emigrated with his wife and son to Canada to work as a research geologist.
He is survived by his wife Judie; son Peter and his wife Carla of Squamish, B.C; sisters Margaret Cheesman of Edmonds and Beverly Hill of Manson.
He was preceded in death by both his parents.
A memorial service was held in a chapel in Ottawa on June 15. Memorial donations may be sent to Child Haven International, R.R. #1, Maxwell, Ontario, Canada, KOC1TO.

Donald D. Teeter
April 11,1937- June 10, 2009
Donald (Don) Dean Teeter was born April 11, 1937 in Tacoma, WA to Clarence Elmer and Hazel Elenor (Schaffner) Teeter. Multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer) took him away on June 10, 2009 at the age of 72 at Fort Vancouver Convalescent Center in Vancouver, WA.
He graduated from Walla Walla Valley Academy and the University of Washington. For most of his working career he served as Executive Housekeeper at several hospitals. He also spent three years assisting on his daughter and son-in-law's dairy farm in Cathlamet.
In 1957 he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served for six years. He also served as a corpsman in the U.S. Air Force Reserves for 18 years, retiring in 1980. He was very proud of his military service and in particular his trips that assisted in bringing back prisoners of war from Vietnam.
Later he was a corpsman in the US Air Force Reserves serving 18 years, retiring in 1980. He assisted in bring back the P.O.W.s. He was very proud of his military service.
Don leaves behind the love of his life Betty (Bishop) whom he was married to for 52 years. Daughters Kari (Greg Kandoll), Kelly (Wes Schreiber), Kami (Charles Arcudi), grandchildren Heather Kandoll and Joseph Arcudi, a sister Dorothy Janson, a brother Richard Teeter, many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
A celebration of his life will be Saturday, June 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Meadow Glade Seventh-day Adventist Church Fellowship Hall 11001 NE 189th Street, Battle Ground, WA 98604.

Mildred Louise Nelson
On June 5, 2009, Mildred Louise Nelson died in Cathlamet. She was prayerfully surrounded by the presence of God, sons, daughters, grandchildren and loved ones.
She was born to Teresa and Earl Martin in Clarence, Mo. on October 11, 1928.
She lived a very full life. She participated in multiple local organizations, founding several. She wrote five books, many magazine articles and children's plays (even creating her own costumes and puppets). She was outgoing and personable, in love with God, life, family and friends. Raised in an era when the silver screen lured, she, her sister Arlene and friends attended movies on a regular basis, hence her draw to the dramatics, which earned her the National Thespian Dramatic Society award three years standing and the honor of being voted their president.
She worked as a fashion designer for Montgomery Ward in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and was selected to join Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was instrumental in the formation of the Page Youth Foundation, and won a beauty contest to be crowned Miss American Legion.
On August 15, 1948, she and Alvin S. Hanson were married. She birthed five children, one passing away at birth. When that marriage ended in 1962, she moved with her four children to the Long Beach Peninsula and upon arrival birthed baby number six. She has lived in Long Beach since that time. Louis married Rollie A. Nelson in 1963 and soon there were eight!
Once settled in Long Beach she found a saving grace in Jesus Christ and thus began a full-time ministry in counseling teenagers, alcoholics and hurting people needing a shoulder using the word of God and prayer.
As she penned five inspirational books, she also served as secretary for the Peninsula Christian Council for Ecumenical Churches. In 1981, she had a radio program on KAST called "Walking in the Life." A devotional leader for churchwomen in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, she served as chaplain, secretary and board chairman for His Supper Table.
She was one of the founders of the Ilwaco Community Church, with initial Bible studies taking place on her living room floor. She was a worship leader for the Full Gospel Business Men's Association and Chairwoman of Aglow Fellowship. She started the Jesus Club, an after school youth ministry and began a radio ministry on KOHI called "Perils, Pitfalls and the Prince of Peace." Prior to this she was certified in the Stephan's Ministry as a trainer and leader. She also had a daily blog in which she offered encouragement and Biblical inspiration.
The true highlight of her life came in 1985 when she and her husband traveled to Israel where they walked where Jesus walked and were baptized in the Jordan River. She loved time spent in the scriptures, music, writing songs, dancing with family, playing piano, singing and journaling.
Survivors include her sister Arlene Haglund of Hillsboro, Ore.; children Diane Maki of Grays River, Shari Miethe of Wrangell, Alaska, Connie Brenaman of Naselle, Jeff Hanson of Vancouver, Keven Cox of Laramie, Wyo., Todd Nelson of Battle Ground, and Trisha Schwartz of Wrangell, Alaska; 13 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, husband Roland (Rollie) A. Nelson formerly of Chinook, daughter Cathy Ray and great-grandchild John.
A service celebrating her life was held on June 13 at Pacific Bible Church in Ilwaco. Any contributions made in lieu of flowers will be donated to the Stephan's Ministry in care of Naselle Lutheran Church. Her guest book is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.

Mildred Louise Nelson died June 5, 2009. A service will be held at the Pacific Bible Church in Ilwaco on Saturday (June 13) at 11 a.m.

Thomas W. Grenfell
With a fighting and loving spirit, but a tired body, Tom W. Grenfell passed away May 27, 2009.
Tom was born February 18, 1923, in Hood River, Ore., to Myrtle and Charles Waldo Grenfell. He graduated from R.A. Long High School, in Longview in 1941. In August 1944, Tom graduated from the University of Notre Dame Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School as an ensign. He spent the next 18 months on Guam. Once the war was over, he returned to graduate from Washington State University in 1949. He majored in architectural engineering and was a member of SCARAB Architectural Honorary.
He worked as a mechanical engineer for Lamb Grays Harbor for 35 years.
Tom and his wife Shirley traveled extensively for his business and their pleasure. He was proud to have visited all continents, except Antarctica.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 14 at the Cosmopolis Lions Club, 601 2nd St.
Remembrances may be made to the Lions Seeing Eye Dog Program.

Helen Howard
The former Helen Keyser lost her battle with congestive heart failure on May 30, 2009.
She was born in 1919 in Sioux City, Iowa. Helen graduated from Wahkiakum High School in Cathlamet in 1939. She had lived in Portland, Ore. since 1951.
Helen's husband Lyle Howard and her brother Harry E. Keyser preceded her in death. She is survived by three daughters, Cleatha Thomas and Linda Moody of Portland and Dorothy Moody of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Fae Mertsching of Longview, Thelma Norvell of Huntingdon Beach, Calif. and Marian Sowell of Santee, Calif.; a brother Ralph Keyser of Cathlamet; two grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews and her four kitties. No services will be held.

Albert F. West
Albert Fredric West, 89, of Longview passed away April 16, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center.
He was born May 18, 1919, in Cathlamet, to James and Florence (Chadwick) West, and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1937.
Al married Pearl Tover June 7, 1941, on Puget Island, where they made their first home. He served in the Navy during World War II as an aviation radio technician first class, stationed on Whidbey Island and Guam. Upon discharge, Al and Pearl moved to Longview.
Al worked in electronics and commercial painting. He was a member of the Cowlitz Odd Fellows Lodge (IOOF), American Legion, Sons of Norway, Painters Local 10, and past member of the Longview-Kelso Elks. He was also a member of the Longview Yacht Club, serving as port captain for 38 years. Al and his family enjoyed a river lifestyle of boating, fishing, skiing and work parties while creating lifelong friendships.
Al is survived by Pearl, his wife of 68 years; two daughters, Susan Farquhar (Mike) of Longview and Bev Yonge (Gary) of Seattle; five wonderful grandchildren, Scott, Stephanie, Todd, Heather and Jennifer; five great-grandchildren; a niece; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, David West.The family would like to thank the staff at Mabel’s Gardens, Al’s home for the past year. We would also like to acknowledge the staff at Community Home Health & Hospice for their respectful, compassionate care during his final days. We are deeply grateful.
A celebration of Albert’s life was held at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park. Private inurnment took place at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet.

Harvey M. Johnson
Harvey M. Johnson Sr., 86, a lifelong resident of Naselle, Washington, died May 7, 2009 in Astoria, Oregon. Born February 24, 1923 in Naselle, he was one of five children born to Frank and Olga (Ojala) Johnson, both of Finnish ancestry. Harvey grew up in Naselle and graduated from Naselle High School in 1941. He played varsity football for the Comets.
Following high school Harvey began driving log trucks for Martin Wirkkala Logging until June of 1944 when he was drafted into the US Army. The Army put him to work driving 6 ton semis in the European Theatre until honorably discharged in April of 1946.
While stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky at the end of his Army hitch Harvey met Dorothy Gruner and they were married April 11, 1946 in Louisville, Kentucky. Harvey told Dorothy his job in Naselle was waiting for him so the couple settled in Naselle. There Harvey continued driving log trucks for Wirkkala and Johnson, Salmon Creek Logging and later Weyerhaeuser Timber until retirement.
Harvey was a lifelong member of the Naselle Assembly of God. There he taught Sunday school for many years and in doing so touched the lives of many along with serving as a deacon for over 40 years.
Family and faith were paramount in Harvey’s life and he was committed to both. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, salmon fishing and morning coffee with is buddies at Johnson’s One-Stop in Naselle. In years past he had restored a Nash Metropolitan car to near mint condition. Harvey was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor, always had a twinkle in his eye and he enjoyed many friendships.
He and Dorothy recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. She survives, residing in Naselle. Also surviving are son and daughter-in-law Harvey Jr. and Jeannine of Naselle; daughter and son-in-law Jeanette Johnson and Bill Grimberg of Naselle; grandchildren Luke and wife Madison Johnson, Lindsay Littau and David Grimberg; and great-grandchildren Tye, Tatum and Kennedy. He was preceded in death by an infant brother Harvey, a sister Eva Peters, and brothers Oiva and Reino.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009, 11:00 AM at the Naselle Assembly of God church with a luncheon reception following. Marilyn L. Hokanson
Marilyn Leora Hokanson, 82, died May 23, 2009 at her home in Oregon City. She was born December 23, 1926 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Pirl and Othla (Names) Wilson. She traveled with her family to Longview, in 1936 to escape the ravages of the "dust-bowl" and attended school in Longview and Kelso.
In 1943 she married Ragnar Hokanson and they have celebrated 65 years together. They operated the Hokanson farm on Puget Island during World War II and later engaged in truck transportation which took them back to Longview, Seattle, Houston, Tex., Stroudsburg, Penn., and finally to Oregon City in 1970. After retiring in 1982, they engaged in yacht charters on the Inside Passage to Canada and southeast Alaska. Marilyn was the chef and hostess and made many lasting friendships.
She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker and was loved by all who knew her. She enjoyed gardening, traveling and entertaining. She was a full partner with her husband in their family business and together their journey took them to all 50 U.S. states and many foreign countries. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church wherever they resided and she loved to sing the songs of her faith in God that was such a part of who she was.
Marilyn is survived by her husband at home, a son Larry Hokanson of San Antonio, Tex; daughters Janice Benson of Huanuco, Peru and Judy Placencia of Wilsonville, Ore.; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Jimmy, Bobby and Danny Wilson.
Viewing will be held today (Thursday) May 28, 2009 at Dahl-McVickers Chapel in Kelso, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Dowling Chapel in Cathlamet. Interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Neighborhood Church, 21065 Stafford Road, Tualatin, Ore. on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 11 a.m.

Olive A. Rodal
Lifelong Puget Island resident, Olive Anita Rodal, 93, passed away May 21, 2009 at Columbia View Care Center . She was born September 22, 1915 on Puget Island to Olaf and Alma (Rasmussen) Brecke. She graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1933 and married Halvor Rodal on December 2nd of that same year in Vancouver. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1997.
Olive was a member of the Tuesday Club. She enjoyed playing pinochle with her lady friends, entertaining and making goodies for everyone. She had a kind heart and if anyone ever had an injury or pain, wherever she was, she stepped forward and acted as “the nurse” because she had always wanted to be a nurse. Olive also enjoyed working in her yard and garden and loved feeding the ducks. For many years she went commercial fishing with her husband Halvor in Alaska.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen Ann Jolly of Fresno, Calif.; granddaughters, Kari Traxler and Joni Eldred and great-granddaughter, Jennifer Eldred all of Clovis, Calif. She was preceded in death by her son Larry Rodal on May 31, 2006.
A funeral was held May 26, 2009 at Dowling Chapel in Cathlamet. Interment took place at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Olive Rodal’s name to Cathlamet First Aid Division, P.O. Box 142, Cathlamet, WA 98612.

Herbert A. Kehrli
Herbert Andrew Kehrli, a long time resident of Cathlamet, passed away May 23, 2009, at the age of 74.
He was born in Beaverton, Ore., on September 21, 1934 to Casper and Margaret (Von Allmen) Kehrli. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1952 and attended Lower Columbia College for two years. He was a sports enthusiast having played football in high school and at LCC. Herb served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959.
Herb was a longtime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 302 and 612. He operated heavy equipment in the construction industry, having worked on the Alaska Pipeline through the whole construction. He lived in Mt. Vernon for many years and moved to Cathlamet in the early 1980s. He worked for Jerry DeBriae Logging Co., Inc.
Herb was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting for elk, deer and birds. He was a pilot and enjoyed flying his own float plane. He will be missed by his black lab Oggie.
He is survived by his sisters Hulda LeGro of Mt. Vernon and Emma Gregory of Roseburg, Ore.; sister-in-law Tillie Kehrli of Cathlamet; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nephews and nieces including Lee and Diane Tischer, Scott and Pat Kehrli, Keith Kehrli, and John and Jewel Kehrli all of Puget Island. His special caregiver Beth Lorenzo and her family of Puget Island cared for him the past two years. He is also survived by his step children. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Casper and Albert Kehrli and his sisters Clara Ruhlin, Rose Bauer and Margaret Pedersen.
A celebration of Herb's life will by held at 1 p.m. on Saturday June 20, 2009 at the Norse Hall on Puget Island for friends and family to share memories.

Yvonne M. Webb
Lifelong Wahkiakum County resident, Yvonne Marie Webb, 72, passed away May 1, 2009, at St. John Medical Center. She was born May 3, 1936 in Astoria , Ore. to Chester and Clara (Olson) Sprague. Yvonne graduated from Naselle High School in 1954. She married Robert Webb, Jr. on September 27, 1959; he survives her at home.
Yvonne was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church and Highway Club, both in Cathlamet. She worked at the Family Practice for several years, retiring May 1, 1999.
In addition to her husband Robert; she is survived by a son, Charles Webb; a daughter, Katie Webb-Wileman; a brother, Clyde Sprague, a sister, Ouida Hanscom; grandchildren, Kayla and Cody Wileman and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at J.A. Wendt Elementary School in Cathlamet. Private interment has taken place at Fern Hill Cemetery in Skamokawa, WA. Greg Farnsworth
Greg Farnsworth, 45, died April 21, 2009 in Carson City. , Nev. He was born February. 19, 1964 in Longview to Chester and Evelyn Farnsworth and spent his childhood years in Cathlamet.
He had recently moved to Reno from Stagecoach, Nev., where he lived for four years. He was a correctional officer for the Nevada Prison System in Carson City and an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing, riding dirt bikes, playing video games, camping and especially spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Stephen Farnsworth and his step-father, Farris Waterman.
He is survived by his wife Darena Dunn of Reno; sons, Michael Mitchell of San Diego, Calif., and Matthew and Mackinzie Farnsworth, both of Reno; a daughter, Linda Mitchell of Warner Robins, Georgia; a brother, Marty Farnsworth and a sister, Deanna Dachtler, both of Kelso and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
A Memorial Service was held April 25, 2009 at Walton’s Chapel in Carson City.

Walter J. Armstrong
Cathlamet resident, Walter James Armstrong, 85, passed away April 23, 2009 at Community Hospice in Longview. He was born September 6, 1923 in St. Johns to Arthur J. and Sigrid (Mickelson) Armstrong and attended school in Vernonia, Ore. He spent time in the European Theatre in the Army during WWII.
In 1989 he moved to Cathlamet from Troutlake. He married Alvina Keilwitz on June 7, 1997; she survives him at home.
Walt worked as a Cat Operator for several companies, worked construction for several years and lastly Oregon Ready Mix, retiring in 1985. He was a member of River of Life Assembly of God Church and was a devout and faithful Christian.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his wife Alvina, he is survived by a son Dany Armstrong; stepsons, Gary, Steven and Michael Keilwitz; stepdaughters, Susan Webb and Pamela Hight; a brother, Jim Armstrong; a sister, Jane Robbins; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by a son, Denis Armstrong and brothers, George and Ervin Armstrong.

Helen B. Durrah
Helen Bernadine Durrah died April 2, 2009 at Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association in Brookline, Massachusetts. She had been living in Boston since 1971, where she had worked for the First Church of Christ Science as a longtime accountant, retiring in 1988.
She was born in Astoria on December 22, 1917 to Elmer Durrah and Nellie (Larson) Durrah of Eden Valley. She was raised there, graduating in 1935 from Naselle High School. She lived in Seattle for a time, privately learning to fly at Boeing field.
In 1944, she joined the U.S. Navy, and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a Specialist (T) (LT) third class. She trained new pilots in simulators. After the war she attended the University of Washington and graduated in 1951 with a BA degree in history. She was always a traveler, working in New York, Switzerland, and Boston . Her passions were her Christian Science Church, reading, family and genealogy.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Harold Durrah of Santa Barbara and George Durrah of Skamokawa. She is survived by her brother James Durrah of Skamokawa; nephews Richard and Jolan Durrah of Skamokawa, Russell and Kathy Durrah of Cathlamet, Dwaine Durrah of Longview , Jon Durrah of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and niece Ruth and Steven Doumit of Cathlamet.
The Durrah family is one of the first pioneer families in Western Wahkiakum, settling there approximately in 1876 from New Brunswick, Canada.
Cremation has taken place by Hamel, Wickens & Troupe Funeral Home in Quincy, Mass., Helen will be laid to rest with her parents at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet.

A potluck and memorial service will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at the Valley Bible Church, Rosburg, for the late Nellie E. Davies, who passed away last December.

Michael H. Firth
Michael Howard Firth, 67, of Ramona, Calif. died on March 24, 2009. He was born on June 12, 1941, in San Diego, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was employed by the Ramona Unified School District before retiring.
He was a life member of the VFW Post 3783 and the American Legion in Ramona.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Flo Firth; daughters Marlena Silva of Cathlamet and Megan Oliver of Chandler, Ariz.; son Michael Firth of Bixby, OK, five grandchildren with two on the way; two sisters, a brother, his in-laws and other extended family and friends.

Eva G. Althauser
Eva G. Althauser lost her battle with cancer March 27, 2009. She was born March 23, 1927, in Rapid City, S.D.
She had two daughters precede her: Fawn M. Wood, 1995, and Eva M. Perrault in 2007.
She is survived by two daughters, Lela C. Woods of Arlington and Dixie G. Hancock of Longview; two step-children, Merrylee Lanehart of Kelso and Mike Althauser of Castle Rock; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
She asked there be no services and donations may be made to the Cancer Institute of America.

Gary M. Olsen
Lifelong Cathlamet resident, Gary M. Olsen, 68, passed away March 21, 2009 in Cathlamet.
He was born March 2,1941 in Clatskanie, Ore. to Harry E. and Selma H. (Svensen) Olsen. He grew up and attended school in Cathlamet and Puget Island.
As a young man, he commercial fished and trucked cucumbers from Puget Island to Tacoma, before buying his own long-haul truck. Later, he drove log trucks and dump trucks in the local area, until his retirement in 2007.
He enjoyed his grandchildren’s games, classic cars and car shows, traveling in his RV, boating, camping, spending time with his family and his dog Sparky.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Dorothy, at home; sons, Garrett Olsen, Clayton Olsen and Jeff Olson; daughters, Joannie Bjorge and Lauralee Olson-Taggart; brothers, Douglas Olsen and Spencer Olsen; sister, Phyllis Blix; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Viewing is at Dowling Funeral Home, Thursday, March 26 2 – 7 p.m. and Friday, March 27, 9 – 11:30 p.m.

DiAnne E. Knudsen
Cathlamet resident, DiAnne E. Knudsen, 63, passed away March 24, 2009 at her home.
She was born on April 3, 1945 to King Leroy and Helen (Smith) Brothers in Portland, OR. She grew up in Portland and graduated from Madison High School in 1963. She attended Oregon State University and later Lower Columbia College in Longview. In 1987, she came to Cathlamet.
She married Joel Knudsen on Puget Island, in 1990.
DiAnne was a woman of varied interests and passionate beliefs. She was politically active in the Democratic party, her entire life. She was an artist and loved to paint with oils. She was involved in the music industry for many years and wrote the lyrics to “Windy” for the Association. She was dedicated to her family.
She is survived by her husband, Joel Knudsen; daughters, Leise Moffatt and Rachel Paquette; grandchildren, Tia and James Carson and Allie Moffatt; three great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many others, whose lives she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 2 p.m. at Dowling Chapel in Cathlamet. A Social will follow.

Ora I. Snyder
Ora Isabel Coates Snyder, 101, passed away March 5, 2009 at her home, in Longview.
She was born on December 8, 1907 in Klamath Falls, Ore. to Silas Roy & Mattie B. (Evans) Wright. Ora came to Cathlamet from Edmonds, WA in 1924 and she graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1926. She worked at the family business, Cathlamet Market and Wahkiakum Refrigeration for many years. She was an 85 year member of United Church of Christ and a lifetime member of Maple Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star. She was a person who loved horseback riding, shopping and especially, time spent with her family. She was a gentle, classy lady.
Special thanks are extended to the Canterbury Inn, for their loving care of Ora.
She is survived by son, Donald Coates and wife, Susie of Anchorage, AK; step-sons, Bob Snyder of Aberdeen, WA and Dick Snyder of Louisiana; daughters, Shirley Hendrickson of Welches, Ore, and Ora Loraine Bauer and husband, Ray of Puget Island; a sister, Roberta Myers of Condon, Ore.; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren, one niece and one nephew.
She is preceded by her first husband, Melvin Coates (1965), & second husband, M. C. Snyder (1989); brother, Ernest Wright (1932); son-in-law, Al Hendrickson (2007), son-in-law, Glenn Bjorge (1986); grandson, Kirk Bjorge (2001) and great-grandson, Joby Bjorge (1989).

Arthur W. McLain
Rosburg resident, Arthur W. McLain, 78, passed away March 6, 2009.
He was born in Nome, Alaska on June 25, 1930 to Arthur T. and Caroline M. (Stipek) McLain. He lived in Nome until 1952, graduating from Nome’s high school in 1948. He married Dorothy Ann Carlson in Nome on July 25, 1952.
He then served in the US Army from 1953-1955; he was with the 467th CIC detachment at Ft Richardson and resided at Anchorage. They moved on to Seattle from 1956 –1973 and he graduated from A & P school for aircraft mechanics, in 1958. They then moved to Burlington, CA in 1973, where he worked as an aircraft mechanic, until he retired in 1991.
After retirement, the McLains made a final move to Rosburg, WA, residing there until his death. Some of his various hobbies were photography, gardening and doing house repairs.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy at home in Rosburg; son, Brian T. McLain of Shoreline; sister Caroline Reader of Nome, Ak; nine nieces and five nephews. He is preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Rolfson and Marjorie Smith.

Leon J. Almer
Leon James Almer, known to all as "Red" passed away February 25, 2009, at Columbia View Care Center in Cathlamet, WA. He was born February 8, 1929 in Jamestown, North Dakota to Henry and Elizabeth (Klundt) Almer. The family lived in Montana for several years before moving to Vancouver, WA in 1938, where at the age of 16, Red worked for Dodge Pumps and Plumbing. Red moved to Skamokawa in 1949 and worked several different jobs including logging for Durrahs. He worked for Heagy and Sons in Woodland and moved with Heagy and Sons Logging to work at Crown Zellerbach in 1947-48. He was a Wahkiakum County Deputy Sheriff in 1956-57. He was a member of the Skamokawa Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1950s for eight years. In 1968, he started his own business, Red's Plumbing, becoming well known throughout the county. Red served as Wahkiakum County Commissioner for two different terms, first elected in 1968 and again in 1990. He also served as a Skamokawa Sewer District Commissioner and sat in on many fair board meetings. In 2002, the Wahkiakum County Fair was dedicated to him "for all he had given the county, through his leadership, dedication and willingness to help others and most of all for being everyone's friend." In 1981, he and his sister Betty bought the Oasis Tavern in Skamokawa. Red married Zenna Melick in 1950 and they later divorced. In 1969 he married Carolyn Anderson and she preceded him in death in 1978. Several years later, he married Jerry Miller and they later divorced. He spent many a year doing what he loved most--hunting and fishing. For many years he taught hunting safety classes to budding hunters in the county. He was quite the entertainer, showing off his talent in many places throughout the county, playing with many bands and performing in many Skamokawa Revue programs. Red was a devoted and loving father and brother and is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Jim and Darlene Almer and grandson Tom of Longview; daughter and son-in-law Rita and Edd Kirwan and grandson Ryan of Longview; daughter and son-in-law Julie and Syd Hampson and grandsons Tyler and Zachary of Chehalis; sisters Betty Koziel of Skamokawa and Sylvia Cuda of Vancouver; brothers Arnie Almer and Stanley Hartung of Vancouver, Harold Almer of Woodland, Allan Almer of Riverside, Calif., and Roger Almer of Longview; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Henry Hartung, sister Agnes and brothers Calvin (Kelly) and Gordon Almer. Services were held March 2 at Skamokawa Methodist Church. Mona Elliott
Mona 'Trixie" Elliott, 81, of Huntsville passed away February 13. She was born in Drefach Wales on November 25, 1927. Mona went to London at 16 to attend nursing school, and was a children's nurse there during WWII. She met her future husband in London at the Astoria Ballroom in 1952. They were married 3 years later and had been married for 53 years.
Her adventures in America began with her wedding in Toledo, Ohio and the cross-country trip back to Skamokawa, Washington. She was the wife of a commercial fisherman/college student. At Washington State University she babysat to make extra money.
They moved to Seattle where she worked for a department store, and earned her American citizenship on June 13, 1960.
In 1962 the space program brought them south to New Orleans and Huntsville. Here in Huntsville, she was a Red Cross volunteer at Huntsville Hospital, a softball coach at Lakewood, and an active volunteer at her children's school. In 1972 they moved back to Seattle, where she was active in the nurses office of three schools, and also volunteered with the King County Juvenile Court System. In 1984, they made a final move back to Huntsville and the lifelong friends they had made here.
Over the years, Mona made many trips back to Wales, and remained close with her family and friends there. She was proud of her Welsh heritage, and passed that on to her children.
Always busy, she loved to play bridge and pinochle, shopping and lunch with friends, landscaping and gardening, family/friend gatherings, and her Atlanta Braves.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Gwynfor and Sarah Ann Thomas; her sister, Vilma Penman; and grandson LCpl. Nathanial Windsor USMC.
Survivors include: husband, Robert Elliott of Huntsville; son David, daughter-in law Leslie, and grandson Lucas Elliott of Scappoose, Oregon; daughter Michele Elliott and grandson Christopher Paulson of Huntsville, granddaughter Sarah Ann Paulson of Castle Rock, Washington; brother Gerallt and sister-in-law Pat Thomas of St Austell, Cornwall; sister Eira and brother-in-law Roy Cutler of Cardiff, Wales; godchildren Steven Parr of Palm City, Florida, and Shannon Downs of Pulaski, Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews and loved ones in the US, UK, and Australia.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday February 21 at 2:00 pm at the Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville. Memorial donations may be made to the American Red Cross, the Alzheimer's Association, or your favorite charity.

Timothy Ray Mace
Timothy Ray Mace, 60, of Longview, passed away Saturday evening, February 21 at his home surrounded by family after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He had been a resident of Longview for 38 years.
Tim was born April 8, 1948 in Portland, Ore., the first-born child of Glenn and Hellen (Mecham) Mace. Tim was baptized and raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and attended church in Cathlamet.
Tim spent his primary years living in Boring, Ore. and in Brightwood, Ore. before his parents moved to Puget Island in 1954. He finished his schooling in Cathlamet. Tim graduated from Wahkiakum high School in 1966. He worked throughout his high school years in the Mace family business and with the Army Corps of Engineers, saving his money for his college education, graduating from Brigham Young University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
In 1971 Tim went to work for Reynolds Aluminum in Longview, working for 28 years and finishing his career at Chinook Ventures as an Environmental Engineer and retiring in November of 2008.
Tim married Cheryl Thomas in 1972, they had two daughters and later divorced, always remaining friends. Several years later he married Sharon Kingsley, two sons were born to their union and they later divorced.
Tim was a highly motivated and industrious person from the time he was a very young man. Tim felt that each day of his life should end having accomplished something. To this mantra he was faithful his entire life. He had a love of books and learning and was an avid reader. Tim had gardened most of his life beginning with the 4-H Garden Club as a boy. He was an avid and enthusiastic outdoorsman. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and his brothers and enjoyed nature and the outdoors.
Tim was an exemplary father to his four children and took great delight in their accomplishments and their many talents. He felt his role as a father was his most important role in life.
He is survived by daughters Brittany Eppers and husband Lance of Vancouver, and Tamber Fox and fiance Jason Hurley of Kelso; sons Anthony and Nicholas Mace of Longview; dear and close friend and caregiver Cheryl Mace; grandchildren Mariah Hamrick, Kayla Fox, Morgan Eppers, Cody Torgrimson; mother Hellen Mace of Cathlamet; sister Sherrolin Powell (Jack) of Portland; brothers Larry (Jill) Mace of Nephi, Utah, Randy (Brenda) Mace of Davenport; Kelly (Jean) Mace of Afton, Wyo. and Shawn (Sheila) Mace of Cathlamet. He is also survived by three aunts, cousins and friends.
A viewing will be held today (Thursday) from noon to 6 p.m. at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park and from 1-2 p.m. before the funeral service on Friday, February 27. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Messinger Hill Drive, Cathlamet.

Wallace Salme
Wallace "Wally" Salme, 83, died on February 8, 2009 in Longview.
He was born on 23 March, 1925 in Deep River to Otto and Helga (Ketola) Salme. He graduated from Naselle High School in 1943 and worked as a logger and timber faller for most of his life before retiring from Reynolds. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46 aboard the Destroyer USS Meade during World War II.
He married Rose Marie Sanchez before marrying Beverly J. Robbins in May of 1956 in Seaside, Ore. They were married for 46 years.
He loved to work in the garden and travel with his wife.
He is survived by son Ronald Salme of Naselle; daughters Gayle Gorley of Westport, Ore. and Janna Katyryniuk of Naselle; stepdaughters Pamela Cameron of Sutherland, Ore. and Terry Lightowler of Warrenton, Ore; sisters Marjorie Mason of Eugene, Ore. and Inez De Semple of Lake Oswego, Ore.; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and special friend Margret Altman of Boring, Ore. He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly and a grandson, Michael.

Arleta "Connie" Roundtree
Arleta Constance "Connie" Roundtree died on December 27, 2008 in St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia.
She was born in Ketchikan, Alaska and schooled in Wards Cove/Wacker City.
She married Melvin C. Roundtree on June 21, 1944 in Wacker City and moved to Washington state in 1972, with friends and family in Petersburg, Puget Island, Cathlamet, Rochester and Olympia.
She is survived by a sister, Julie McKinley; son Clifford M. Roundtree; daughters Julie D. Dahl and Marie B. Baine, four grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
She was preceded by her husband Melvin, parents Arne and Julia Berg, brother Bob Berg and a grandson.
Services will be held at Olympia, Puget Island and Petersburg, where she will be buried beside her husband.

Evelyn M. Engelson
Lifelong Naselle resident, Evelyn M. Engelson, 92, passed away February 1, 2009 in a Cathlamet nursing home.
She was born on May 25, 1916 in Naselle, to Toivo and Hilma (Sundberg) Penttila. She graduated from Naselle High School in 1933 and later married Art Engelson in Naselle.
A wife and mother, she also worked for Wahkiakum West as a Secretary for many years, retiring at 75 years, in 1991. She was a gifted artist in oil painting and photography. She made photo albums and slide shows, embroidered; loved hostessing, making pastries and coffee. She took great pride in her Finnish heritage.
She was a member of Naselle Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her sons, Edwin and Robert Engelson, both of Naselle; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Art (November 15,1954); a daughter, Hilma “Bunny” Latham (April 2, 2000); a brother Hans Pentilla; brother-in-laws and wives, Elmer and Lois Engelson and Harold and Ida (Engelson) Martin; four sisters, Hady Penttila, Hulda Bighill, Helen Oatfield & Milja Rasmussen; three nephews, Van Engelson, David Oatfield, Ronald “Skeeter” Bighill and a grandson, Kerry Latham.

Rose H. Jones
Rose H. Jones, 98, passed away Wednesday evening, January 7, 2009 at Betz Nursing Home in Auburn, Ind.
Rose was a member of the Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) in Cathlamet and attended New Hope Christian Center for the last 10 years, since moving to Indiana.
Rose was a gifted person, given much to encouragement and hospitality. She loved the Lord and all people. She loved music and always played piano by ear and sang in public.
She was a 50-year member of the Elochoman Grange in Cathlamet. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Joanne Stout of Bellingham; one devoted daughter and care-giver and son-in-law Sharon and Billy-Joe Servis of Waterloo, Ind.; five stepdaughters, 28 grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Marion and Hattiet (Flynn) Porter and her husbands Ora Wood, Ralph Stout, Walt Tibbs, and Ivan Jones. She was also preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wood; a daughter, Elaine Brister; a stepson, Victor Stout; two brothers, Clint Porter and Ted Porter; and three sisters, Pearl Allen, Grace Yule and Mabel Haga.
A celebration of her life may be held in the future.

Sharon Minsker Ellis Lince (Sherrie) of Newcastle, died January 9, 2009.
She was born May 2, 1947, in Longview.
She is preceded in death by her father, Manley Minsker when she was three years of age and her husband, Elmer Doug Lince in 2001.

She is survived by her husband, Donald, at home; three sons, Patrick Knowles of Portland, Frank Knowles of Longview and John Knowles of Bellingham; her brother, Kenneth Carroll of Council Bluff; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; one niece, five nephews and one grand-nephew, Daniel, whom she adored. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Knowles.

William F. Crouse
Longtime Cathlamet resident, William F. Crouse, 88, passed away at his home January 20, 2009. He was born December 30, 1920 to Wallace E. and Laura (Whitney) Crouse in St. Helens, OR. Bill graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1940 and went on to graduate from WSC (WSU) in 1948. He came to Cathlamet in 1952 with his wife, Gladys (VanBuskirk) Crouse, they were married November 11, 1951; she survives him at home.
Bill served in the U.S. Army during WWII and had been a dairy farmer in Cathlamet for most of his working years.
He and Gladys enjoyed square dancing and sports. He was a member of the Elochoman Grange, the Cowlitz Coin Club, and a past member of Jersey Cattle Club and Holstein Club. He also served as a 4-H leader.
Besides his wife Gladys, he is survived by his son, Tim Crouse; grandchildren, Jerry Hargrove, Jim Hargrove, Michael Crouse, Dax Crouse and Stephanie Crouse; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Tom Crouse in 1991, a sister and two brothers.

Patrick F. Olson
Patrick Frank Olson, 46, a long-time area resident, died at the University of Washington Medical Center on December 10, 2008. He was born December 24, 1961 to Frank and Sharon (Carnes) Olson in Longview. He was raised in Cathlamet; and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1979.
He worked as a log truck driver locally and in Alaska. He is survived by his brother Alan Olson and his sister, Rebecca Olson; two nieces, Alethia and Jessica Harris.
A memorial service was held at Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home on December 17, 2008.

Darrel M. Sellards
Cathlamet resident, Darrel Morgan Sellards, 71, passed away December 15, 2008 at his home.
He was born on March 30, 1937 in Longview to Roy and Melba (Morgan) Sellards. He grew up in Cathlamet, attending Wahkiakum schools. He served in the US Navy from 1951-55.
He moved to Prince of Wales Island, AK from Cathlamet in 1972 and came back to Cathlamet in 1994. He worked for Louisiana-Pacific in Ketchikan , AK for 20 years and after coming back to Cathlamet, worked for Bob Olsen Logging, retiring in 1999.
He enjoyed shooting, hunting, his dogs and raising horses.
He is survived by sons, Ed, Scott, Monte and Trace Sellards; daughters, Shelley McAleny and Tracie Barlow; step-children Debbie Brown, Delbert, Don and Denise Sellards; sisters Sharon Skoutas and Karen Sellards and many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by sons Cole and Clay Sellards; daughters Connie Sellards, Elliott and Tammy Sellards and his beloved friend Dorothy Rose, who preceded him earlier this year.

Barbara Ann Domenighini
Funeral services were held for Barbara Ann Domenighini,, 76, of Coquille at on December 13 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coquille.
She was born January 16, 1932 in Astoria to Forrest and Ruby (Larson) Dixon. She lived in Rosburg until she was 12. She died December 1, 2008, in Coos Bay.
Her family moved to Coquille in 1948 where she graduated from Coquille High School in 1950. She married George Domenighini on August 25, 1952 in Vancouver. They lived in Bandon but later moved back to Coquille.
She is survived by her husband George of Coquille; daughter Rebecca Johnson of North Bend; sons Richard Domenighini of Portland, Randall Domenighini and his wife Rinda of Coquille, and Robert Domenighini of Coquille; sister Betty Tomminger and her husband Merle of Molalla; a granddaughter and grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James.

Donna M. DiPasquale
Skamokawa resident, Donna Marie DiPasquale, 65, passed away December 15, 2008 at Providence Hospital in Portland, OR. She was born January 25, 1943 in Portland, OR to Fred and Bernadine (Adams) DiPasquale. She graduated from Cleveland High School in 1960. She moved to Skamokawa from Portland in 1980.
Donna was a longtime board member for the Wahkiakum County Fair, a member of the Redmen Hall - Friends of Skamokawa. She worked at the University of Portland in administrative positions. She also worked for the LCEDC for several years. She enjoyed fishing, garage sales and volunteering. She especially loved her family and friends. She was always there to help with her loving smile. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters Samantha Christensen (Dave) of Portland, OR and Wendy Westover of Tigard, OR; sisters Sharon Schmitz of Skamokawa and Catherine Woolery of Newport, OR. She is also survived by Zain Christensen, the grandson she loved so much; and many nieces and nephews.

Floyd H. Hoven
Longtime Cathlamet resident, Floyd H. Hoven, 89, passed away December 4, 2008 at a local nursing home. He was born on October 27, 1919 in Alvado, New Mexico to Joseph and Edith (Bookhammer) Hoven. He served two tours in the Army Air Corps during WWII. Floyd worked for Crown Zellerbach Corp; he was Weighmaster for 20 years, retiring in 1985. His wife, Jeannette, preceded him in death in 2006. His first wife, Agatha preceded him in 1978. He loved doing carpentry and enjoyed trains & planes. He was a longtime member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars - #5297 and Wahkiakum Lions Club. Floyd is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Floyd Jr and Barbara, Richard and Joyce, John and Anita and Fred and Darlene; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Cindy and Calvin Grasseth, Christine and Erik Andres, Toni and Dave Ross and Gloria Holmes; two step-daughters, Julie Whitrock and Patti Weeks; four brothers, Clarence, Harold, Homer and Ray; one sister, Edna Jean Hoven; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded by two brothers and a sister. A graveside service was held on December 7, 2008 at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet. Betty J. Pedersen
Longtime Cathlamet resident Betty Jane Pedersen, 82, died November 25, 2008 at Community Hospice in Longview. She was born June 15, 1926 in Hysham, Mont. to Ray and Thrina (Ohnsager) Moffitt. On February 14, 1949 she married Pete Pedersen; he preceded her in death May 31, 1985. They raised their family on Puget Island before moving to Cathlamet in 1971.
She was a member of the Longview/Kelso Elks, Sons of Norway, UCIDA and Columbia River Fisherman's Protective Union. She worked for a total of 25 years at Doumit's Grocery and Bob's Shopping Center before retiring in 1996. She was a loving person who enjoyed her family.
She is survived by daughter, Sherry Stewart; son Art Pedersen, brother Clarence Albrightson; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son Ray Pedersen, two brothers and three sisters.

James R. Kinler, Jr.
James Robert Kinler, Jr., 27, of Medford, Ore., formerly of Skamokawa, died November 20, 2008.
He was born March 25, 1981, in Piqua, Ohio, to parents Jim and Gale Kinler. He moved to Medford in 1996 where he worked at Wild River Pizza and was a member of the Southern Oregon Boys.
He is survived by fiancee Codi; sons Jaxin and Jordin; parents Jim and Gale Kinler; sisters Nicci Bergseng, Sherry McGee and Tricia Kinler-Roush; brohters Michael Kinler and Chris McGee; a niece and six nephews. He is preceded in death by friends Robert Macial and Kelly Beachler.

Billie Jean Rich
Billie Jean Rich (Gibbons), age 70, of Vancouver died on November 27, 2008.
She was born on February 26, 1938 in Longview. On March 26, 1957, she married her lifetime friend, Richard "Dick" Gibbons. She was employed as a clerical assistant in the medical field.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Dick in Vancouver; two sons, Rick and Butch Gibbons, both of Vancouver; two daughters, Debbie Broselle and Diane Dunning, both of Vancouver; four sisters, Sharon McCarthy, Marcia Hage, Marilyn Schwingdorf, and Yvonne Gorans, all of Longview; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Chuck Rich.
A Memorial Service will be held on December 6 at 10 a.m. at the St. Johns Lutheran Church in Vancouver. Donations may be made to the church in lieu of flowers.

James W. Francis
James W. Francis, 88, of Long Beach died November 15, 2008 in Long Beach. He was born October 6, 2008 in Pasadena, Calif., one of three children of James and Lillian (Warnock) Francis. He grew up in Pasadena where he was active with hiking, skiing and Eagle Scouts – his father was Scoutmaster. He attended Pasadena City College for two years.
At the beginning of World War II he worked for Lockheed Aircraft where he met Betty Jean Gross, and they married on November 19, 1943. He then joined the Merchant Marines, serving on the “SeaBarb,” a cargo and troop ship for two years. Following his discharge he owned two ski shops in the San Bernardino Mountains and one in Pasadena. He later was territory manager for Anheuser-Busch and their top salesman in the area. Following that, he owned and operated two restaurants in June Lake, Calif. For many years he was affiliated with the American Kennel Club as a professional photographer and judge. He retired to Cathlamet and four years ago moved to Long Beach.
He is survived by daughters Janet Gatzke of Ocean Park, Pam Lamm of San Diego, Calif., Jennifer Francis of Lakeworth, Ill.; son Brian Francis of Arizona; sister Lillian Robins of Shasta Lake, Calif.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nephews Larry and Steve Robins of Shasta Lake, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, daughter Kathleen Tharp and brother Robert Francis.
The family will hold a private service at a later date. Penttila’s Chapel by The Sea is in charge of arrangments.

Lena Beard
Longtime Cathlamet resident Lena "Sunnie" Beard, 76, died November 13, 2008 in Cathlamet.
She was born to Edward and Florene (Bitmer) Miller on December 20, 1932 in Woodland. She graduated form high school in 1950 and married Roy Beard on December 24, 1949 in Woodland.
The couple moved to Cathlamet and worked as co-owners of Beard's Shake Mill for 40 years.
She loved to play the organ, knit, crochet, and do needlework. She and Roy enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by her husband Leroy "Roy" Beard at home; sister Eddie Nielsen of Seaview; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Don and Doloris Wages and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Billie and Dan Bardsley, all of Cathlamet; five nieces, four nephews; many great-nieces, great-nephews and good friends. She is preceded in death by two sisters, Marilyn Sandstrom and Dee Gehrig.

My darling Donald, six months have gone by now and you are in my thoughts every hour of every day. My life will never be the same without you. I still wait daily for you to walk through the door. Donald Roy Johnson
Cathlamet resident, Donald Ray Johnson, 67, passed away November 12, 2008 at Community Hospice. He was born July 7, 1941 in Raymond, WA to Loyle and Mary (Ponzoha) Johnson. Donald lived in the Longview-Kelso area for 40 years and graduated from Kelso High School in 1959. For the past 8 years he resided in Cathlamet. He married Sharon Peek on December 16, 2000 on Puget Island; she survives him at home.
Donald was a deacon in his church, Covenant Reformed OPC of Longview. He retired from Weyerhaeuser Dec. 31, 1995 after 35 years. He was a foreman at retirement. Donald was involved in little league baseball in Kelso and Washington State Jaycees. He loved gardening, dahlia growing and was a kind gentle man of strong faith.
Besides his wife Sharon, he is survived by his mother, Mary A. Johnson of Longview; sons “Biff” Keith Johnson of Tigard, OR, Owen Johnson of Toledo, WA and Jay Johnson of Florence, OR: stepsons Robert Wilkins of Florida, Richard Wilkins of Montana and Ray Peek of Cathlamet; stepdaughter Bonnie Bigler of Cathlamet; a sister “Kookie” Hendren of Longview; two grandchildren, one great-grandchild; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two nieces, a great-niece and five great-nephews.
A funeral will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park. Visitation will take place before the service from 10-12. Roy E. Jolma
Roy E. Jolma, 88, died at home on November 4, 2008, after prolonged illness.
Roy was born in Vancouver, on July 18, 1920 to Arnet Theodore Jolma and Hilda Josephine Hill. He attended school in Quincy and St. Helens, then trained as a machinist at Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, Ore.
He later married Helen Mary Helon of St. Helens, and had two sons, Jeff, of Boring, Ore., and Gerald, of Seaside, Ore. He also raised a niece, Lorna Cole, of Portland.
In 1939 he enlisted in the USAAF and was stationed at Hamilton Field, Calif. He went to the Philippines in 1940 and worked at Nichols Field during the outbreak of WWII. He survived the march from Bataan and labored in a steel mill in Northern Japan. He received two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star as well as many other commendations.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne Gerritz, his sons, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held November 10, with a full military interment at Willamette National Cemetery.

Karen Lee Thomas
Karen Lee Thomas, 60, of Warrenton, OR died October 29, 2008 at a Cathlamet nursing home.
She was born on September 8, 1948 in Pasadena, Calif. to Don and Dorothy (Richardson) Chambers.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Thomas, and daughter Casey Thomas, both at home in Warrenton.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday) at Columbia View Care Center.

Palmer Arnold Johnson
Palmer Arnold Johnson died on September 20, 2008 peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.
Palmer was born on March 14, 1919 in Astoria, Ore. to Norwegian immigrants Peter and Astrid Johnson. He was raised with his two siblings on Puget Island in Washington state. He moved to Southern California after high school.
At age 22, Palmer met Norma Mae Steele, who would become his wife of 66 years. The two met on a blind date of roller skating and soon fell in love. They married on September 6, 1942 in Hollywood and made their home in Burbank, Calif.
He served in the Army Air Corps in Central Burma, and participated in the China Offensive during World War II. His first child was 18 months old when he returned from the war and met her for the first time.
After the war, they returned to Puget Island to raise their daughters Julie and Toni (deceased 1977). During the winter, he built fishing boats. During the summer, he fished for salmon in Alaska commercially in boats that he built.
Palmer and Norma returned to South California in 1961, eventually settling in Ventura County.
Church was a central part of his life. Palmer was a kind and giving person. He loved spending time with his family and adored playing with his grandchildren. He was a great dancer and loved dancing with his wife. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor.
Palmer was a loving, sweet and wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He will be greatly missed by his wife Norma; daughter, Julie Prince; son-in-law, David Prince; Grandchildren Wendy McDougall, Tammy Anthony and Chad Fey; and great-grandchildren, Kaley, Ashlee, Samuel, Taylor and Caleb.

Edward T. Lazor
Cathlamet resident, Edward T. Lazor, 61, passed away October 17 in Cathlamet.
He was born on December 5, 1946 in Seattle to Edward and Ramona (MacKay) Lazor. As Ed grew up, he lived in many places in the States, in Italy and Japan, as his father was in the Navy. He went to high school in Japan and college in Texas .
He lived in Corvallis , Ore. 1988 – 2002, Cathlamet 2002 - 2004 and Central Point , Ore. 2005 – 2008. In September 2008, he returned to Cathlamet, where his wife grew up, to fish and walk the beaches and valleys in his final days.
He served in the Army, built vineyards in the Salinas Valley, Calif. in the late 1970s; worked at Orkin Pest Control, ’79-’80, owned a business in pest control in Oregon for more than 15 years, and was employed at Charter Communication in Central Point, Ore., as Market/Sales branch and Regional Manager in southern Oregon.
He married Pamela Below of February 15,1981 in Cathlamet at the bride’s parent’s home.
He enjoyed writing, art, fishing, reading, researching, church and music. He was an inspiration to his sales team, coworkers and church friends.
He is survived by wife, Pamela Lazor; sons, Ed and Matt Lazor; step-son, Jeff Hood; step-daughter, Jenny King; sister, Kathy Lazor; mother and step-father, Ramona and Seva Acoutin; sister-in-law, Toni Below; two grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Lazor.
A service will be held at Dowling Funeral Home in Cathlamet on Tuesday, October 28 at 2 p.m. Interment & committal at Greenwood Cemetery.

Rita Dietz
Cathlamet resident, Rita Dietz 76, passed away October 17, 2008 at her residence.
She was born March 3, 1932 in Leicester, Mass. to Michael and Katalin (Tryzbienda) Hucko. She graduated high school in 1949 and then graduated from the Kaiser-Permanente nursing program in 1953. She retired after more than 40 years in nursing. She later moved to Cathlamet, from California in 1994.
She was a private person, who enjoyed her family, pets and was an avid reader. She was a member of Cathlamet Christian Fellowship.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Evelyn Dietz; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Jim Jespersen; three brothers, Joe, Henry and Louis Hucko; a sister, Sophie Hintze; five grand children, three great-grandchildren, a close niece, Carolyn Hintze and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by a brother, Mike Hucko.
Viewing hours are 10 – 12:30 p.m., Friday, October 24 at Dowling Funeral Home.

Ferris Waterman
Longtime resident, Ferris Waterman, 74, passed away Oct 9th at the Hospice Care Center in Longview .
He was born Oct 6, 1934 at Toledo , WA to Walt & Rhoda (Morgan) Waterman.
A veteran of the Viet Nam War, he retired after serving in the US Navy for 21 yrs. Ferris was a member of the DAV, an avid fisherman, hunter & sports fan.
He is survived by his companion of 19 yrs, Evelyn Farnsworth, a son, Glenn Waterman; 3 daughters, Denise Waterman, Jean Ware & Fay Bill; 3 stepchildren, Deanna, Marty & Greg Farnsworth; 20 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; 1 nephew, Verne Waterman & many special friends. He is preceded in death by 2 sisters, 2 brothers & a step-son, Steven Farnsworth.

Allen J. Wright
Cathlamet resident Allen J. Wright, 61, passed away Oct. 2, 2008, at home.
He was born Sept. 16, 1947 in Chelsea, Mass., to John and Gladys (Wegdahl) Wright. He and his family moved to Cathlamet in 1961, and he graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1966. In school, he excelled in athletics, especially basketball and track. He held the high jump record for 13 years.
Over the years he worked in the woods, commercial fished, was a cook in Alaska and a counselor for drug and alcohol abuse in Kodiak, Alaska.
Mr. Wright very much loved and enjoyed his grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Allen Wright of Kelso and Steven Douglas Wright of Longview; a daughter, Rhonda Jane Wright of Castle Rock; a brother, Grant Wright of Portland; a sister, Kristine Sudar of Longview; his mother and stepfather, Gladys and David Spooner of Cathlamet, 10 grandchildren; a niece, Wendy Fleckenstein, three nephews, Wayne Wright, David Wright, and Mike Cox, and his good friend Gary Huber of Puget Island.
Mr. Wright was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Wright in 1995, and his father, John Wright in 1967.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at our Saviour's Lutheran Church on Puget Island.

Glenrose M. Hedlund
Glenrose Marie Hedlund passed away September 30, 2008 at the age of 87. She was born on December 23, 1920 to Emil and Lillian (Johnson) Lindgren of Deep River. She attended elementary school in Deep River and graduated from Naselle High School in 1939. Glenrose married Clarence Hedlund on February 23, 1940 and they were married for 56 years. She was a loving wife and dedicated caregiver to him for many years.
Glenrose will be remembered for her wonderful smile and her sweet, friendly personality. She loved flowers and often provided centerpieces for the Senior Citizen lunches and other community events. She had an interest in family history and area history. She collected antiques and enjoyed being asked to display her collections at events like “Tea in Glenrose’s Attic”, the Annual Spring Tea in Rosburg in 2006 and at the Finnish American Folk Festival in Naselle this past July. She spent many summer weekends hosting tours with her friends at her grandfather’s cabin at Cullaby Lake.
Glenrose worked at the Rosburg Store for 9 years and was a member of the Wahkiakum County Historical Society, the Gray’s River Grange and the Finnish American Historical Society of the West.
Preceding Glenrose in death were her husband Clarence in 1996, her son Dennis in 2007, sister Mildred Jones and borther Robert Lindgren. Surviving are her daughters Dianne (Sid) Kogut and Elaine (Michael) Wilbanks, her grandchildren - Tara, Jeffery, Kaysha, Joey, Jennifer, Michael and Erin, 5 great-grandchildren and a large number of extended family and friends.

Joanne White
Joanne White, a 70-year-old Yreka resident passed away on September 30, 2008 at Madrone Hospice House in Yreka.
Joanne was born on November 9, 1937 to Crint and Eva Cothren in Clay County, N.C. She was proud to be the mother of two children, Mark and Teresa. Throughout her life, Joanne lived in numerous location. In 2001, she moved to Yreka to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Along with being a mother, Joanne worked for about 40 years in retail with stores such as K-Mart and Pick-N-Save. Joanne enjoyed life to the fullest.
She loved playing bingo, cards, spending time with her grandkids, eating at McDonald's and talking on the phone to her family. Besides her family, Joanne had another love and that was the love for her orange cat, Squeaker.
Joanne was preceded in death by four of her siblings: Gad, G.L., Crint Jr. "Bug" and Gerald Cothren. She will be deeply missed by other memebers of her family including her daughter and son-in-law Teresa and Steve Collier of Big Springs; her son and daughterin-law Mark and Julie White of Montague; her four grandchildren, Luke and Justine White, and Jeremy and Levi Collier; and her three siblings, Margie Luce, General Cothren and Barbara Hoven.
A celebration of Joanne's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Ocoveober 18, 2008 in the Yreka Elk's Lodge, 332 W. Miner St. in Yreka.
