Two men were arraigned Monday on charges of possession of controlled substances. David L. Waldeck, 44, Cathlamet, pled not guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled substance, heroin, and a trial was scheduled for April 13. Joseph E. Loudin, 34, Longview, pled not guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine, and a trial was scheduled for April 14. According to an affidavit from a Wahkiakum County deputy sheriff, the officer spotted a vehicle driven by Waldeck going 68 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone on SR 4 on February 18. The officer pulled the vehicle over. While he was talking to the driver, he noticed a strong smell of marijuana. A witness arrived and reported seeing the people in the vehicle throw things from it. Another officer arrived and with the witness found a silver case with scales and a can containing plastic bags with drug residue that tested positive for heroin and methamphetamine. The officers arrested the men. In a pat down search, they found a used syringe and $1,800 on Waldeck, and on Loudin, a drug pipe. In a search of the car, they found a set of scales, a drug pipe with residue of marijuana, and two beverage cans designed to hold hidden items.
