Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

December 9 – 11:40 a.m. The Grays River ambulance responded to aid a Rosburg resident who had been unconscious. 12:44 p.m. A Deep River resident reported trespassers.

December 10 – 10:52 a.m. The District 4 Fire Department assisted when flooding was discovered at a building in Cathlamet. 3:52 p.m. A caller reported a car in the ditch on SR 4 near Skamokawa. There were no injuries reported. 4:21 p.m. A caller reported that juveniles were using a credit card that did not belong to them.

On December 10, Wahkiakum Fire District 4 and Cathlamet Fire Department responded to St. James Episcopal Church on Columbia Street to assist with a water leak. The water line for the church runs through the attic of the church and had frozen, District 4 Chief Jim Wilson said. "Yesterday at 10:46 a.m. they thawed and burst." The town public works department turned off the water, and firefighters used shop vacuums and mops to remove it, Wilson said a 2,000 gallon portable drop tank was deployed in the main sanctuary to catch water leaking from above. By noon most of the water was removed and the trucks returned to their stations, Wilson said.

The water caused extensive damage to ceilings and floors, according to a church member. The congregation will celebrate its Christmas services in the church, she said.

December 11 – 12:55 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Puget Island resident who was having a seizure. 1:03 p.m. A caller reported a boat with six passengers was sinking in the Columbia River; the Coast Guard responded. 4:13 p.m. A caller reported seeing a man and woman fighting alongside SR 4 near Rosburg; according to the witness, the man threw the woman into the ditch.

December 12 – 9:16 a.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported that his mail box had been vandalized. 3:10 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Cathlamet resident who was having chest pain. 3:51 p.m. A caller reported a two vehicle accident in Deep River; minor injuries were reported. 3:56 p.m. A Skamokawa resident reported seeing smoke coming from a neighbor’s home; the Skamokawa Fire Department responded.

December 13 – 8:07 a.m. A Deep River resident reported that someone had come to the door and asked for gas; when the caller asked why he didn’t go to the gas station, the man became angry and confrontational. 10:09 a.m. A caller reported drug activity at the high school. 10:59 a.m. A Grays River resident reported a power outage. 11:44 a.m. A burglar alarm was activated at a Grays River residence. 12:27 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid an Elochoman Valley resident who was ill. 12:57 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance transported a patient from the clinic to the hospital. 5:42 p.m. Wahkiakum School District reported the possible abuse of a student. 6:50 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to the county jail to aid a man who had collapsed. 9:15 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported hearing a shot fired.

December 14 – 7:30 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to a residence where a death had been reported. 12:13 p.m. A caller from Deep River reported that three men had been looting metal and were traveling in a vehicle also carrying gas cans and hoses. 1:43 p.m. A caller was concerned about three unknown vehicles that were parked on a neighboring property while the owner was away. 4:27 p.m. A Rosedale resident reported a possible violation of a protection order. 5:59 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to a Cathlamet residence to aid a person who was unwell. 8:44 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported hearing shots fired. 9:46 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported hearing shots fired.

December 15 – 11:46 a.m. A resident reported that someone was out of control and requested assistance in removing him from property.

December 16 – 3:01 a.m. A caller reported a vehicle in the ditch on Puget Island. 5:23 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid an elderly Cathlamet resident who had fallen. 5:43 a.m. The Grays River ambulance responded to aid an elderly Deep River resident who was in pain. 6:42 a.m. A Cathlamet resident reported that a family member was threatening suicide.
