Lady Mules throttle Huskies 72-42, start district play
The Wahkiakum Lady Mules basketball team closed their regular season with a 72-42 win at Morton last Friday.
With the win, the Mules placed sixth in Central League standings. They opened the girls 2B district tournament last night (Wednesday) on the road.
The winner plays the Pacific League number two at 6:30 p.m. in Montesano. The loser plays Monday, 4 p.m., at Rochester.
The Mules led the Huskies 16-11 after one quarter. They outscored the Huskies 27-12 in the second quarter to take control of the game.
"The Lady Mules had 22 assists on 29 field goals and outrebounded Morton 45-24," said Coach Tim Brown. "All 10 available players scored for the Mules."
Halie Boyce led the balanced scoring with 14 points. Kari Schillios and Courtney Helms each had 10, Jordyn Wirkkala nine, Whitley Wirkkala eight, Tasha Ford seven, Shelby Deaton, Ashley Helms and Evy Clark each had four, and Shelby Felton two.
Deaton had nine rebounds, W. Wirkkala eight, and C. Helms seven. W. Wirkkala had four steals, and Boyce, Schillios and J. Wirkkala each made four assists.
The Mules made 12 of 19 free throws, 60 percent; Morton made nine of 15 free throws, 60 percent.
The Mules finished the season with a 5-14 record, 3-10 in league play.

host Lady Mules
The Naselle Comette girls basketball team earned third palace in the Pacific League after a tiebreaker Monday.
The Comettes entertained the Wahkiakum Lady Mules last night (Wednesday).
Tacoma Baptist won the playoff to claim second place in the Pacific League; North Beach finished fourth.
