Sturgeon derby and car show Saturday

DECENT--As this three day Memorial weekend comes to an end, the sun is shining and it's turning out pretty nice; it's just too bad it wasn't like this the entire weekend. I hear tell that we're going to warm up and be very sunny and nice for the weekend and it couldn't come at a better time because the car show is coming!

THIS IS IT--This weekend is a big one in Skamokawa and all the sturgeon fishermen are hoping for some good catches and all the car show folks are hoping the sun shows up, as the annual Dollars for Scholars Rods and Reels Rod Run is finally here and it should be another good one; their sixth year! They've got some awesome prize tables this year and will make the winners of those tables mighty happy! I just received a hand-made wooden log truck from Ray Danielsen complete with moveable reach for those long loads of logs. His donation is very much appreciated. His wife Judy has given us four wonderful items and with her stained glass talent and cut glass yard art work, she's really out done herself with her donation. We've got a beautiful hand blown glass vases by our local glass blowers, Kyle Gribskov and Treasure Collupy, gift baskets, gift certificates and much, much more, so come down to the Skamokawa Grange Hall and the fairgrounds' Youth Building to check out everything. The car show items are in the grange and their drawings are at 3:30 p.m. and then their awards, while the derby item winners are held around 4:30 p.m. so, you've got time to take part in both drawings.

If you haven't already registered your car, you need to be at the grange hall between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. All spectators get in free, so bring the whole family and have a wonderful time looking at the cars, groovin' to the music, with both live and DJ music, and games too, so lots to do. Of course, once you're hungry, you can enjoy the chicken and salmon BBQ for just $8, although kids under 10 only cost $5, but if they don't like that, Sharon Buennagel from Sharon's Pizza and More will be on hand to serve up hot dogs and strawberry shortcake.

There will also be T-shirts for sale featuring Redmen Hall, plus the three fabulous cars from last year's show that took home the top honors.

All you high school kids with cars, come on down and show off your rig, as you get free entry! This fund raiser is for scholarships for both Naselle and Wahkiakum high school graduates, so we hope you'll help support this worthy cause! See you Saturday!

BREAKFAST--Don't forget that the members of the Skamokawa United Methodist Church will be serving breakfast Saturday, as folks who arrive early for the car show or derby may not have had time to eat, so prior to that big mid-day meal, you might want to start out with a great sausage and egg, pancake or biscuits and gravy breakfast for just $7, with $1 going to Dollars for Scholars. Kids under 12 are only $5 and the price includes a beverage as well. They will be serving their tasty breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m.

Happy anniversary wishes go out to Robert and Karla Kyle, the Al Bergsengs, the Kelly Meltons and 67'er Sharon Stout Servis and her hubby BJ. Happy days everybody!

REDMEN HALL--There's a new exhibit at the River Life Interpretive Center at Redmen Hall starting June 11, which will feature three of our local talents. A Wahkiakum High School Junior, Nick Deal, will show his architectural photos; Martie Vavoudis from Puget Island will eshibit her ceramics and Noreen Fitts from Grays River will be there with her paintings. The exhibit will run until July 12, so we hope you'll come to Redmen Hall and take in this latest exhibit Thursday through Sunday from noon to four.

HARD AT WORK--The Skamokawa Grangers and their wonderful group of volunteers are digging in their heels as well as kicking them up, as they prepare for the fourth annual Smoky Water Follies, a musical bonanza of talent produced and directed by Adele Baker-Swift and Sunrise Fletcher. The melodrama/comedy part of this show is going to be in the logging theme, as we've covered the fisheries and the dairies in past shows, so it was time to highlight the loggers' life way back when; should be a hoot! Not only do we have a barbershop quartet this year, but we've got the Sweet Adelines as well.Tickets are only $10 and are available at the Bank of the Pacific in both Cathlamet and Naselle, or you can ask a grange member or call me and I'll be sure to get those tickets to you! June 24, 25 and 26 are the days of the show, with the first two shows on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. We hope you'll come to the historic Skamokawa Grange Hall and enjoy this fun musical production and help keep our grange hall's doors open so that the whole community continues to have this wonderful building to hold all their special events.

MID MONTH--On June 17-18, the VFW is having their annual garage sale at 739 SR 409 on Puget Island. If you would like to support the veterans and have some good items to donate, call Danny Eaton at 849-4451 and he can even pick those items up for you. Monies raised from this sale support the VFW Post 5297 and if you are a veteran who served during a foreign war, they'd love to have you join their post.

BIG SALE--The Puget Islanders will also host their annual massive garage sale, which will take place on the same days as the Skamokawa Follies, so go out and shop around Puget Island during the day, and then head to the show later. The end of the month is a busy one and we hope you're able to keep up with all these special things going on!

FATHER'S DAY--It was just a few weeks ago that we were treating all the moms and special women in our lives to special treats on Mother's Day, but now it's the dads' turn, as June 19 is Father's Day. We hope you're planning something extra nice for that special guy in your life!

GREAT TURN OUT--If you missed the Grand Opening of the new Skamokawa Resort you missed out on a fun afternoon with a great group of folks who were impressed with the new look of the store and enjoyed the tour of the newly decorated hotel rooms and vacation rentals, which are awesome, as well as some of Sharon Buennagel's tasty sandwiches and more. It was great to see so many people there and many had not known about the hotel part of this complex, so with its new look, it was a great time to show off those new queen sized beds and carpet. The vacation rentals are big and roomy and with Suite #3 sporting a Jacuzzi tub in the main bathroom, a bathroom on each floor and five bedrooms, well, there's room for a ton of people in there. Four of the bedrooms have twin beds and each is a trundle, so it can accommodate from 10 to 16 people easily; great for those family reunions!

There were even four drawings and while I didn't know the one little girl who won, and didn't find her to get her name, I did know Dorothy Davenport, Susan Kuhn and Lee Tischer, who all won very nice prizes, so congratulations to all of them! The store and the entire complex met with rave reviews and we are thrilled to have the convenience of a local store back in our area. If you find they are missing an item you would regularly buy, just mention it to the gals at the desk and they'll try to accommodate you. If you want to find out more about the place, you can check out their website at http://www.skamokwaresort.com or give them a call at 795-0726 or if you'd rather, you can email them at skamokawaresort@yahoo.com.

NICE TO SEE--It was great to see that we had proclaimed May 15-21 as National EMS Recognition Week as our area volunteers have really sacrificed a lot to respond to our communities needs. Kudos to all of them who so unselfishly give their time to help us all out.

I loved seeing the Mule Sports Hall of Fame come into being as well, as we've had some awesome athletes come out of our school and for those of us who have lived those years with those athletes, it's a great tribute to all of them. Congratulations to all the inductees and for those of us around during the days when the '64 basketball team took first in state, well, we loved going back to reminisce that golden year. It was story-book fantastic!

BACK FROM TRIP--Jessica and Sunrise Fletcher recently returned home after a trip to see their son Adam and his wife Sara in Arizona. It was a good thing the two got their vacation in when they did as they've had Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) guests for over a week now and have been very, very busy. Combine the guests, cooking and musical revue duties, well, there's been little free time to spare for the busy duo.

ALSO BUSY--The Road Scholars also kept Mark Whitaker and the Paddle Center crew busy this week. The Paddle Center has a new number, 360-747-1044. Call to find out when their next batch of lessons or tours are or check out their website by typing in Columbia River Kayaking and it should come up. With some of the folks from the RS group staying at the Inn at Crippen Creek and Twin Gables B & B, it's kept them all hopping. The power outage we had for almost three hours around dinner time one day last week kept them all scrambling with innovative ways to keep their guests fed and happy, but it sounds like they all did just fine as several had gas alternatives, which is handy. I know we fired up the gas BBQ here and finished cooking our lasagna just fine outside!

BEING READY--The power outage was yet another reminder to have alternative cooking and heating sources so that in case of a real emergency, you can be self-sustaining. Hopefully we're getting better at being prepared for those kinds of things. Here's to being ready for anything, and hoping we don't need to be!
