GRV Library makes plans for movie nights

August 2, 2012

News from Naselle:

Looking for a good cup of java? It looks like a new addition at the corner of SR 4 and SR 401. Check out the new little drive through coffee shop Mochas & More that will be open soon. The cute little orange house turned into a coffee stop is the newest venture for Laura Rey of Naselle. Her husband is Glen Rey, manager of Okie’s Select Market in Naselle, and you may have noticed them doing a little painting and yard work around the area over the last week or so. I don’t have an opening date yet, but I’m told it will be within a couple of weeks. Welcome to the community, Mochas & More.

Another great FinnFest in Naselle last weekend. The food, entertainment, displays, teachings, and general hoopla was everything and more to all those who had the pleasure of being there. The community is so fortunate to have the dedicated volunteers putting this extravaganza together every other year. My personal thanks to all of you for another job well done. Now I guess it’s time to start on FinnFest 2014, right?

Other news from the Westend:

The Grays River Valley Library at Johnson Park will be the site for a book sale on Friday (tomorrow) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check out the wonderful hard bound books, children’s books, fiction and non-fiction and even some sets of books all for very reasonable prices. The proceeds will benefit our library. Remember the Grays River Valley Library is free to everyone, is run by volunteers and is supported by donations. We receive no tax dollars, and are not supported by revenue from Wahkiakum County. Johnson Park truly belongs to the people of the community through their generosity. Come check us out, volunteer and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Also at the library, we have purchased a public performance site license which gives us the ability to show movies on a regular basis. By the time school starts we hope to have a schedule of films to be shown for the whole family. For starters, we will stick to classic movies, and family friendly films. Hopefully, with a good response from the community, and suggestions for titles to be shown, this can evolve into a pizza and movie night, dinner theatre night, kid’s birthday party with a movie, or just a family night out. Our approved kitchen will make it possible to serve food and beverages as well. This license also allows for other groups to show movies on the site, so you could also rent the space for a special showing of your favorite movies provided they are included in the list of covered titles and production studios, (about 95 percent of major motion picture studios are included).

The Johnson Park Advisory Board will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on August 8 at 12:30 p.m. in the Grays River Valley Library at Johnson Park. Please join in and see what is going on at the Grays River Valley Center and find out what you can do to make it better for the whole community.

A final reminder that the annual Pig Roast/Campout that is usually held this weekend each year on the property of Poul and Zenaida Toftemark will not take place this year. Zenaida is staying with their young, hopefully to-be-adopted son Elmer, in the Philippines while the paperwork for the adoption is being processed. The pig roast just wouldn’t be the same without her and her wonderful smile, not to mention her cooking skills and oh yes, her dancing ability. Next year will be an even better celebration with the whole family together. We miss you Zenaida, and look forward to welcoming you and Elmer home.

August 6 is the date for Red Cross training on sheltering in place for the Johnson Park designation as an emergency shelter. The training will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 29th Annual National Night Out will be held on August 7 at the Grays River Valley Center in Johnson Park (old Rosburg School) from 6-8 p.m.

The event will be an open house at the Sheriff's Office Substation in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park. Free food will be served.

Visit with staff from the Sheriff's Office and VIPS members to learn more about the services available at the Substation and opportunities for giving back to your community.

For more information, contact VIPS members Ora Loraine Bauer 849-4425 or Kim Sharp 849-4033.

The Grays River Habitat Enhancement District will meet on August 8 at 6 p.m. in the Grays River Grange Hall for their regular monthly meeting. The volunteer commissioners invite the landowners to attend these open meetings and to bring any issues they might have before the board. Comments and questions are encouraged. Refreshments will be served.

You can still pick up fair books and purchase Wahkiakum County Fair Passes at the Rosburg Store in Rosburg and the Bank of the Pacific in Naselle, here on the west end. The passes are $6 and are good for all three days. The 104th annual Wahkiakum County fair will run from August 16-18 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day featuring the theme “Hay Bales and Pig Tails.” Bring the family and enjoy all the entertainment, food, 4H activities and livestock shows every day. You can also check out the fair and its schedules on Facebook and the Wahkiakum County Chamber of Commerce website.

I spoke with Leslie and Joyce Bolton at the Rosburg Store earlier this week and they asked me to remind the readers that they are once again selling diesel fuel. They are also looking for suggestions from the community for ways to make the store better for you. If there is a product you would like them to carry, let them know, and they will try and accommodate you. It’s nice to have a local store, so let’s let them know how they can make it more convenient for us and also profitable for them. Support your local businesses.

For all the seniors in our area, please remember that you can enjoy a nutritious lunch and visit with good friends and neighbors at the Rosburg Hall three days each week. On Wednesdays check out the Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch with lunch prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the Rosburg Senior Lunch program provides lunch and is sponsored by CAP. Come on in and meet the groups, have a great meal and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Lunch is served at about noon each day.
