Nursing home set for auction in January

December 6, 2012

The local effort to find new owners and tenants of the closed Columbia View Care Center found a new hurdle to overcome last week.

The real estate investment firm that owns the building, Aviv REIT Inc., of Chicago, offered to sell the building to the Town of Cathlamet earlier this fall.

Mayor George Wehrfritz formed two advisory groups to look into possible uses and operational costs of the building.

When the groups met last Thursday, however, they learned that Aviv has put the building up for sale in an online auction to be held January 23.

Councilmember Steven McNicholas, one of the advisory committee members, said the group will continue its study while it awaits the results of the auction.

County Commissioner Blair Brady commented on the situation at his board's Tuesday meeting.

"If no one bids, Wahkiakum County or the Town of Cathlamet could take it for $1," he said.

Among the suggested uses are as a nursing home and new quarters for either one or both the county's Health and Human Services Department and Cowlitz Family Health Clinic's Cathlamet office.

Rick Levin and Associates, Inc., the online auctioneer, lists the building at 155 Alder Street as approximately 18,708 square feet previously valued up to $1,300,000. The suggested opening bid is $100,000.
