Head to crab feed Saturday in Rosburg

February 28, 2013

I picked my first bouquet of daffodils yesterday afternoon, so that must be a good sign of things to come, right? I see lots of baby sheep and calves being nurtured by their mothers in the fields along the highway and county roads. Spring must be almost here, new beginnings, new life and hopefully good things ahead for all of us.

 News from Naselle:

Naselle-Grays River Valley School kids are on Winter Break and will return to classes on Monday.

I understand that the new coffee shop at the Appelo Archives center is now open and serving up some nice service to community members. Welcome.

 Other news from the Westend:

This is the big weekend for the American Legion Crab and Oyster Feed at Rosburg Hall. I’m not sure if there are any tickets left, so if you don’t have yours, you might want to call Dale Rose. This annual feed is sponsored by the American Legion Deep River Post #111. Doors open at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Proceeds are used to benefit local vets, scholarships and charities.

Tickets must be purchased by March 1 for the Spaghetti Dinner and silent auction sponsored by the Johnson Park Advisory Board. The dinner will be held in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on March 9 from 5-8 p.m. The menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and a beverage. Wine will also be available for separate purchase. For more information, please call Penny Gregory at 465-2775.

We have some very nice auction items for you to bid on at the dinner. How about an overnight stay at the Farm on the River B&B, a Buoy 10 fishing trip for two, quilts, artwork, collectibles, cutlery, a great fishing vest full of goodies for the fisherman, and even a cord of wood, to name a few. Please call Penny Gregory if you would like to donate an item.

The Friday night movie posters are being distributed to local bulletin boards around the area, with information on the free movie schedule for the month of March. These recently run movies are shown in the activity room at the Grays River Valley Center in Johnson Park (old Rosburg School) on our new large screen every Friday night at 7 p.m. Bring the family on the first and fourth Friday evenings for movies that are family friendly. You can call 465-2310 for more information on the movie being shown. Concessions are available and include popcorn, candy, sodas, and more. Come check us out. There is something fun to do on Friday nights in Rosburg, and it’s free.

The second annual plant, bake, and book sale and soup luncheon is scheduled for May 18 at Johnson Park. We are in the process of gathering plants from local folks, so if you have some favorites you would like to donate, please contact Penny Gregory or me.

Are you looking for a place to do some sewing? We have the perfect solution. The sewing room at the Grays River Valley Center is available for the “open sew” program on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. Arlene Stefan is available to help you out if you need help. The local quilt group has been meeting at the center on Thursday afternoons as well, so if you are interested in learning to quilt, this is the perfect opportunity for you. For more information about this program, please contact Arlene Stefan at 465-2919.

There are lots of fun things to do at the Grays River Valley Center, so pass the word to your friends and family. Pinochle happens on Monday afternoons with the card group, yoga on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m., art group meets on Thursdays at 7 p.m., TOPS (take off pounds sensibly) on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the exercise room, and the Grays River Valley Library and Community Computer Center is open on Mondays from 3-7 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 1-5 p.m.

Sponsorships are available for $65 per year (for immediate family) and for $45 per year for individuals. If you are not a sponsor, you are welcome to use the facility, but we ask that you donate $2 per visit to help defray the heating costs.

Last weekend’s farming seminar, sponsored by WSU Extension, at the center was a huge success, and the lunch was catered by board members of Johnson Park. If you would like to bring a group, hold a meeting or seminar, reunion, birthday party, or just a large family gathering, the kitchen is available for rent for these occasions with or without catering. For more information, call Penny Gregory or Steve and Linda Ramsay.

This year the Advisory Board is happy to announce that on the third weekend in July, in conjunction with our annual Community Potluck Picnic, we will also be celebrating the 75th birthday of the old Rosburg School. Let us know if you have special memories, photos, or ideas to help us with this commemoration. The Advisory Board welcomes your suggestions and looks forward to maintaining this building for you and generations to come. Donations are always welcome and volunteers are always needed.

Have you driven through Grays River lately and noticed the new Fire Hall being constructed on Hull Creek Road just off the highway? It is nearing completion, and they plan to hold an open house in March.

The Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets at the Rosburg Hall each week for a nutritious meal prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew. On Tuesdays and Thursdays meals are also provided at that location and are sponsored by CAP.

Happy Birthday to the following: Mike Matthews, Jeremy Forbes, Ashley Albright, Jack Reinertsen, Riki Saari, Debbie Littlefield, Crystal Lanz, Michael Gilbert, Seth Scrabeck, Blake Johnson, Karen Wirkkala, Sunday Busse, Wendy Strange, Michael Phipps, Grace Mattson, Melanie Bloom, Dustin Eaton, Walter Wirkkala, Matt Scrabeck and Bob Larson. Wishing all of you a perfect day.

Happy Anniversary wishes to Marco and Lisa Colombo.
